New Delhi, July 11 (IANS): A day after the Supreme Court said politicians convicted in criminal cases would cease to be elected representatives, the government Thursday welcomed the order but said its fine print would have to be studied.

"Basically, no one should have an objection to it. But there is a need to study the fine print of the order," said Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari, who was briefing reporters on cabinet decisions.

According to the minister, there were some technical issues, like what happens in case a convict obtains a stay from a higher court, which have to be dealt with in the matter.

"The law ministry will study the matter in detail," he said.

The minister said both the government and public representatives should be given some time to react to the order.

"Both the government, which has to implement it, and the people who are affected by it should be given some time to study the order," Tewari said.

He noted that in many states, criminal cases were lodged due to personal enmity.
