Mangalore, Jul 12: Members of various auto rickshaw unions in the city marched in protest on Friday July 12 demanding ban on entry of rural autorickshaws into city limits. They then held a protest in front of DC's office.

A massive rally was taken from Jyothi circle to DC's office where hundreds of auto drivers operating in different parts of the city raised slogans against the officials to stop rural auto rickshaw from entering the city.

On July 7 at regional transport office, a meeting of rural and urban auto drivers was held under the leadership of health minister U T Khadar to discuss the issue. At the meeting, the minister passed an order to allow rural rickshaws to enter the city in 10 days. The decision irked the city auto drivers and hence they decided to protest.

Addressing the protestors, Ali Hassan, co-ordination committee president said, "Health minister U T Khadar, instead of solving our problems, is creating more trouble for us. The decision was taken by Khadar mainly to pull Ullal votes. Even if Khadar brings the military force here, we are not scared as we are fighting for our rights."

He further said, "Whenever the auto rickshaw association approaches a minister with our problems, there is no positive response. Same is the case with other representatives too.

"Even if auto drivers work for long hours, the money which they earn is not sufficient to meet their basic needs. If rural area drivers enter the city, the problem will worsen. We will not allow rural autos to enter the city at any cost," he asserted.

B Vishnumurthy, auto drivers association president, Ashok Shetty, Arun Kumar, Aboobakkar Suratkal among others were present.

Auto drivers of undivided South canara are looting the public since many years. These tugs are well supported by politicians, RTO, police etc as a vote bank!! One good example is our health minister Khadri, who has to be prescribed with some honesty injections!!
The so called pre-paid counters are just an eye wash. Just imagine the travle from udupi railway station to Laxindra nagar which is hardly 4 KMs costs whooping 55 Rs. In a normal meter it might cost just a minimum of 20 Rs!!
All these auto drivers do not have any basic mannerism an d simply rude. Most of them just nod their head or even abuse and refuse to passengers to their destiny, instead wait like a vulture to extract more money from another passenger who has to travel far off.
The public should come out and protest against these looters!! Because public want good reasonable service with honesty rather than rural or urban demarcation.

These autorickshaw people try to hold the city for ransom. They charge the highest rates, they take away all parking places, they decide which passenger to take which one to refuse and now they don't want others to bring in their rickshaw into city. It is high time for public to wake up and agitate against these autorickshaw people. Already, boycott has started in Bombay and soon it will be followed in Mangalore and other cities. What do they think of themselves? Why are the authorities budging to their demands and keep raising autofare every now and then. Compare the fare in Bombay and follow the example.

    Dear Guys,

You are missing some point. RTA is issuing permits for auto rickshaws for a particular zone(Valaya). As per the permit they are to operate within the zone in which they have obtained permit. They can operate within their zone only. This discipline strictly followed in most of the cites including Mumbai(Borivile autos can only go upto Dahisher Check post) These permits are transferable (often traded for premium) to other party. Mangalore city permit values a lot because it has good business. That is the reason city drivers are protesting. The Rural area permits are easily available, people take up these permits and then operate in the city instead of their designated zones.
Honourable health minister please concentrate on your ministry. Lot of development is required. Wenlock Hospital is the same since my childhood. Kindly improve the health care infrastructure and them involve in matters which are outside the jurisdiction of your ministry

After reading the report I fail to understand how is that my country still remains intact? We are so divided and thoughtless - we don't need any external factors to break the unity of our nation. I always believed that my hometown (Mangalore) is famous for magnificent fences around private properties. Probably now it is the time to extend that idea even to transportation! What a divided unity!

Auto drivers in mangalore city is actually overfed with money bcoz they will take u to only where they desire
so that they can just warm thier engines and go for a sight seeing tour. I travel every week to kerala on my way back if u ask to go to pandeshwar they will not even have the courtesy to say no, they jst turn thier heads to ask the next customer which is so RUDE ,so i think what is the use of prepaid auto counters corporation bank has just wasted thier money on it .Visit calicut u will know what prepaid auto counters is.

As far as possible try to use mass mode of transport like buses. I have seen many students who are fit to walk upto busstand are just dont want to walk... instead they wud show hand at an auto and autowalah will take these youth for a jollyride. I uderstand difficuties faced by old people, women with kids around, people wit heavy luggage ... auto is the only alternative. But I would urge everyone who can try to board a bus to definitely do so. It will help u to be more secure, less expenditure, n decreased per head pollution.

Rural people have limited liberty of public transport compared to city dwellers. Distance involved in rural cases is also high. What city autos are protestin is totally unfair n unjustified demand.

Where is auto drivers savior Mr.Ivan D ? He is suppose to lead these protesters n show himself for cameras in full kurtha pajaama ? I think Ivan is out of station... otherwise he wud have led auto delegation to PM.

Mangalore is no different, it is over congested with millimeter distance between vehicles moving at snails pace! It may be unfair for outside autos picking passengers inside the city! They should allow outside auto ferrying passengers into the city and go back empty! if meters installed strictly this problem can be solved. Bootleggers, hafta vasooli outfits and corporators define territory for their income...why not registered autos claim their territory!!

I have a suggestion. Like inter-state gates, inter city-rural gates should be opened. Those who travel from city to rural areas, let them get down from the city auto and board the rural auto parking at the gate and vice versa. This way the employment will be more and the city auto drivers cannot loot the passengers going to rural places. What about taxi to airport? Airport is not coming to city limit! Live and let live yar. After all we are here for a few days.

As per rule from 6am to 9pm auto rickshaw need to charge normal rates. But at 7.30am also they charge one and half. Near lalbagh and KSRTC in the morning these rickshaw drivers demand very high. And if we say dont want as rates are high, they shout on us and insult.

And if the meter reading says 28 and if u pay 30, we wont get 2rs back. And when its 22 and we pay 20 to them as we dont have change they wont agree.

Yes Robert. I am 100% agree you brother. These Rickshaw drivers churbi should be removed first. I am of the opinion that Rickshaw should be banned as you can see Manipal case. They are just a nuisance since decades. Now Cheaper 4 wheels came and they must be deployed banning Rickshaw. They are polluting atmosphere and Noise pollution. Just stay in city in a top floor. Even in night also you can hear the noise of Rickshaws..

They are just cheating the passengers of Long route buses as they will be in sleepy mood. Non-Copoerative, Bag snatching, route misguiding, sexual assault, murder are common cases by Rickshaw walas since decades...

This totally goonsism by city autowalas.India is a free state and as per Constitution anybody can go, do business, stay in any part of the nation. Then what is the problem in rural autos entering the city limits.Whether these city autos are not entering rural places? What minister U.T.Khader has ruled is perfectly right because he is peoples representative and he has to see everybody's problems. So dear city auto drivers let us opt the policy of 'live and let live'.It is in everybodys interest.
