Kundapur, Jul 16: In an effort to attract youth to agriculture, a unique programme was organized at Sankayya Shetty’s agricultural field at Erribailumane, Kandavara village, Kundapur wherein hundreds of students from various schools and colleges were introduced to different techniques of farming.

The students who flocked to the slushy field actively took part in the demo presentation of paddy planting, ploughing the land with the help of bulls and tilling the land with machines, and quenched their enthusiasm. Though the students were never involved in agricultural activities at their homes, here they all eagerly participated in it. Some students helped veteran agriculturists and peeled the paddy plant while others tried their hand at tilling the land with ploughs.

To create enthusiasm in agriculture, various competitions were also organized. A running race in the slushy field and tug-of-war with the participants wobbling about provided good entertainment for bystanders.

Free plants were distributed to students who participated in the sports events. Muniyal Ganesh of Green India Movement distributed sandalwood and ‘Bilwa’ plants and asked everyone to play an active role in nurturing these plants and protecting the greenery.

This programme was jointly organized by Rotary Club Kundapur, Ans Club, Educational Department, Horticultural Department, and activists of Green India Revolution with the title of ‘Kai Kesardare Bai Mosaru’.

High school, pre-university, and under graduate students participated as well as those from Eco Club, Interact Club, NSS, and Scouts and Guides.

The absence of rain ensured the programme was a success. Veteran agriculturist Annappa Hegde inaugurated the programme. Advocate and Rotary Club president Sheriyara Gopalakrishna Shetty, Rotary district 318, zone 1 assistant governor T K M Bhat, Kundapur Area Educational Officer Gopal Shetty, assistant director of agricultural department Ramdas Rai, Ans Club’s Chethana G Shetty, Geetha B Shetty, gram panchayat president Rukhmaia Poojary, Muniyal Ganesh, Prashanth Tolar, proprietor of Prabhakiran Tiles, agricultural specialist Kenchooru Someshkar Shetty, Shivarama Shetty, Karunakara Poojary, and Rotary Club secretary H S Hatwar were present on this occasion.

“During the time of Independence, 90 percent of people relied on agriculture in India but today, less than 60 percent people pursue agriculture. Agriculture, which played a leading role in the economics of the country is declining. People think agriculture is disgusting, hence, it has lead to its decline. There will be satisfaction in agriculture and pleasure in eating the rice grown from the paddy. There will be no peace in industries and commerce. People should cultivate interest in agriculture and not neglect it. At least have the aim of growing a single plant,” said B Annappa Hegde.

Nice. A subject containing both theory and practical in agriculture will benefit both farmers & students. So, the farmers will overcome their Labour problems and students learn an extra curricular activity in farming.

How the farmers are treated by the government ? What Loans/ Subsidies they give to farmers ? How many seats are reserved for higher studies for the children ? If there is no encouragement from the government for farmers, all go and get 1 Rs /Kg rice. (Hint : Sell the rice in the market for Rs 10/= to the shops and shop owners in turn sell the same for Rs 20/= to others !!)Both earning profit one Rs 9 And other Rs 10/- Good business prospects .This is a true fact !! believe it or not !! How the poor farmer can survive ???!! This is Indian farmers life... working hard to fill the stomach of thousand rich while he /his family remains poor till death. India is rich in resources but poor in managing the rich political leaders !!

Good initiative by the organizers. Nice to see children's enthusiasm. Children are always ready to do such jobs provided such jobs give them hope of a reasonable future. Govt. should introduce some good schemes to motivate the younger generation to get into agriculture and vegetable growth. This should be introduced at highschool level with a programme to at least once a week students are introduced to different agricultural, horticultural, floricultural fields with fun filled activities as well with some breakfast, lunch etc., With this approach definitely more and more students will take interest in such activities and some of them may pursue their career in these fields.

All left to the Government and the local bodies as to how it wants to show the younger generation a sustainable future. In villages, every house has some lawn area wherein these children can easily grow some vegetables. In our time we used to grow vegetables at our lawn or field, but unfortunately now A-Z is purchased from the market.

Beautiful scenes all around and the colorful saries the women are wearing.

For children this life time experience. It is more than a picnic sopt.

In real life it is very very difficult to slog in the paddy fields with the burning sun over you. Only the laborers know the real fact.

"The absence of rain ensured the programme was a success." Well, there wont be any agriculture along coastal region if there is no rain.

Veteran Farmer Mr.Annappa, says " ... People think agriculture is disgusting, hence, it has lead to its decline. ..."

We must respect work of Agriculture as Gods work. We must respect farmers n agriculturists/horticulturists. We must understand that No City can Exist in the world without the concept Agriculture, which mostly is done in villages. Farmers feed City dwellers. H have seen many hi-fi showy type youth, especially ladies, who show disrespect and also feel ashamed to even look at a farmer/coolie. This is height of hypocrisy. When Agriculture stops, Cities will suffer Natural death. This fine equation between village and City, if not respected, then be prepare to bear the consequences. We think most of eatables can be produced in factories. Is it true ?

Many kundapurians get educated in South Korea, UK, Singapore but show total apathy towards agriculture in their own Hometown. Most of traditional agricultural activities in coastal Belt have been stopped for Various reasons.

What will be the future of our progeny ?
