Bangalore's airport may be named after Kempegowda

New Delhi, Jul 16 (PTI) : The Bengaluru international airport may be named after the city's founder Kempegowda, if a Civil Aviation Ministry proposal is approved by the government tomorrow.

The issue is likely to be taken up by the Cabinet at its meeting tomorrow, official sources said here.

The private-led consortium run airport is likely to be renamed Bengaluru Nadaprabhu Kempegowda International Airport after the founder whose 503rd birth anniversary was observed in April.

The Civil Aviation Ministry had last year approved the proposal of the state government following efforts by then External Affairs Minister S M Krishna.

Serious differences had emerged among various organisations over naming of this airport with demands for names like Tipu Sultan (who was born in Devanahalli), social reformer Basaveshwara and former Mysore Dewan Sir M Visvesvaraya, also being raised.

    Changing of names is just politics and may not serve any purpose.Each part will want their leader/prefered candidate .It will make the Government poorer by a few crores of Rupees.The best way to recognize our heros is to recognize all of them not just one and give rise to controversy. The approach road to the airport can be named after one,.The renaming some statues could be erected in a suitable prominent places in the Airport for their memory and contribution for the society keeping the name Bengaluru international Airport intact.

    @KRPrabhu, Mangalore/Banglore

    You rightly put forth demand for rechristening of Mangalore International Airport to Mallya Int. Airport ( Not Viyay Malya, KF airlines).

    Malliah is best known for his work as an architect. He has been called "Father of Modern Dakshina Kannada District".[2]

    It was Mallya's vision which saw the construction of the New Mangalore Port, Bajpe airport, National Highway 17 and most importantly Karnataka Regional Engineering College (since upgraded into National Institute of Technology, Karnataka).

    Other notable projects include the Mangalore Hassan Bangalore Railway Line, the Ullal Bridge on the River Nethravathi, Old Mangalore Airport (Bajpe), the Circuit House, the Mangalore Town Hall, and the All India Radio Station in Mangalore.

    Srinivas Mallya never became a minister but he was an MP for 18 years. His vision n mission no one can match. DK has seen a couple of chief ministers, several union ministers n state cabinet ministers, but none could do any significant work for DK. Most of them lived in the glory of Mallyas monumental work. Mallya carried out virtually all major projects in Dakshina Kannada that stand even today as the best contributions to DK.

    @Pint, Mlor
    You were right, it was ExPM Deve Gowdas time that BIAL came into existence. But do you knw how much wealth Deve Gowda's family earned in this single project ? When BIAL was in infancy of implementation, Deve Gowdas family bought land at cheaper rate from farmers from in and around Devenahalli and also along planned-Highway connecting Bangalore-devanahalli. Deve Gowda knew Land rates will sky-rocket once BIAL is sanctioned. A 1,000 ruppes investment on land valued at one crore once this project became operational. Just imagine how many billions of rupees DeveGowda family swallowed in One single policy-Shot.

    This is the benefit of remaining in power. You knw exactly which project to implement and where, and u make ur self-interests get a realization.

    Thanks Gabbuji for your explanations about late MP. Ullal Srinivas Mallya in support of my comment.Earlier too I had voiced my support in this forum for naming the Mangalore Airport after Mallya sir.What ever developments we see today in and around undevided D.K.dist(Udupi/Mangalore)they are only because of his vision which you have mentioned in the comment.As somewhere said he did not do these only form Managlore as he was Congress MP from Udupi for three times and a close confident of Late PM Jawaharlal Nehru who used to refer Mally as Malliah.Mallya was true son of D.K.who sacrified every thing for the soceity.I profusely thank you and Bhandarkar mam for good words.In fact I was estonished why people marked 58 disagrees for my comment.You have smashed all those negetive comments in a single shot.Thanks once again.

    what needs to be changed is not the names but the governance. what we need is not a different name but different facilities. will the change of name do any good names are not magical, the moment you name it everything improves. after all its time for the political parties to change names, have rallies etc.

    I agree with Charles! What is wrong with existing name Bangalore Intl Airport? Why you need to change the name now!
    Bele danthi Acharies! Visvesvaraya is named after the university already! Tipu is homicide fame. He killed and tortured hardworking and innocent karavali Christians! Kempegowda already has circles, roads and buildings named after him! Keep it simple as the existing name! Some people want to change the name without adding values! Build several flyovers, underpass, clear encroached land, build cycling tracks, footpaths throughout Bangalore make it a traffic free city and change the name behind the creator

    Holds good since Kempegowda was the main architect of Bangalore Urban Development. Instead of keeping some dirty Politicians name better we keep Kempegowda so that at least people can respect his name. But I just wonder how a foreigner will pronounce this name like “Kampe Gowd”

    Lobo Saab, I said people should praise any land mark with the name or title but not to curse. By keeping their name, we can see only 37% praise the name and rest will curse. Then why not NaMo? At least 55% praise and rest will curse but at least we have democracy in principle and majority will rule by default…………… again reservation quota counted too………………

    BIAL name is good for the airport. Why change the name,change the facilities first.People wait in long lines for entering the toilets at the boarding lounge.They have only two washrooms and passengers are increasing everyday.The airport is new but the planning is old.The people who plan new airports should plan it for 100 years .This BIAL departure is worst than a railway station at morning hours.The passengers arrive at late night have no proper rest places at the airport.The passengers cannot leave the luggage at airport and no ‘left luggage counters’ opened.Why we need change in name.

    I find it silly to keep changing names like this. After all what is wrong in BANGALORE ( now BENGALURU ) INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT as a name ? Foreign tourists and people from other parts of India will get confused. Next they will change MANGALORE to MANGALURU / MANGAGALAVURU / MANGALAVARAM etc etc. These people have no sense.

    Now just think how many years this govt may need to build an airport.

    NDA had built 1000 KM BLR-PUNE NH4 4-lane road in just 4 years. This govt could not complete 30 KM stretch of Mlr-Kundapur in last 4 years. The contractor is in jail....
