It's official: Bangalore's airport to be named after Kempegowda

New Delhi, Jul 17 (PTI): The Bengaluru international airport will be named after the city's founder Kempegowda. The government today approved a Civil Aviation Ministry proposal to this effect.

The proposal was approved by the Union Cabinet at its meeting here, fulfilling a long-pending demand of the people of Karnataka, official sources said here.

Hiriya Kempegowda was a ruler under the Vijayanagar Empire who ruled most parts of Karnataka during the 16th century. Having built the Bengaluru Fort and moved his capital from Yelahanka, he is widely accepted as the founder of Bangalore.

The airport, run by a private-led consortium, would be renamed Kempegowda International Airport after the founder whose 503rd birth anniversary was observed this year.

The Civil Aviation Ministry had last year approved the proposal of the state government following efforts by then External Affairs Minister S M Krishna.

The state assembly had adopted a unanimous resolution on the matter last December, though there were differences earlier with some sections demanding that it be named after Tipu Sultan (who was born in Devanahalli) or social reformer Basaveshwara or former Mysore Dewan Sir M Visvesvaraya.

The Bengaluru airport, which became operational in May 2008, is one of the busiest in the country. It is owned and operated by a GVK group-led joint venture Bengaluru International Airport Pvt Limited in which KSSIDC (a state government entity, Airports Authority of India, Siemens and Zurich Airport are also the shareholders.

    Its not true that Kempe Gowda Built Bangalore. Bangalore was a mere village and kempe Gowda was just a village chiefton then. Bangalore which was a village gradually became a town under Mysore vodeyars and subsequently under hyder Ali and Tippu Sultan and the British Bangalore became a city. Gowdas who are majority in karnataka get everything done in favour of them. Kempe Gowda neither built any fort nor was he even a ruler. a mere village chiefton. Why name something after kempe gowda. The majestic is already being named after him

    @KRPrabhu, Mangalore/Banglore,

    I too wondered why your view of naming Mangalore International Airport after Proud son of undivided South Canara Mr.U. Srinivas Mallya got several dissapprovals. Since he left earth in 1965, many people of current generation do not knw work of Srinivas Mallya. Or Many people just heard his name but NEVER made a try to know about him and his selfless contributions. In any case, his work must come to a public discourse for sure, otherwise he will soon be forgotten. I heard Lobo mama giving fitting tribute to great soul Srinivas Malya and I am sure he made efforts to know about great soul Srinivas Malya.

    Mr.Malya jumped into freedom struggle at young age of 18. He came in contact with Mahathma gandhi, Jawaharlala Nehru and other great leaders. Nehru called Mallya as Malliah, is best known for his work as an architect. He has been called "Father of Modern Dakshina Kannada District". ( unofficially)

    It was Mallya's vision which saw the construction of the New Mangalore Port, Bajpe airport, National Highway 17 and most importantly Karnataka Regional Engineering College.

    Other notable projects include the Mangalore Hassan Bangalore Railway Line, the Ullal Bridge on the River Nethravathi, Old Mangalore Airport (Bajpe), the Circuit House, the Mangalore Town Hall, and the All India Radio Station in Mangalore.

    Malya saw to it that DK got a Port, a worldclass education center, a public hall, a railway network, Radio station, ... His vision is simply beyond words.

    Srinivas Mallya never became a minister but he was an MP for 18 years. His vision n mission no one can match. DK has seen a couple of chief ministers, several union ministers n state cabinet ministers but none of them could do any significant work for DK, which is a pity. Most of them lived in the glory of Mallyas monumental work and hid behind mallyas work. Mallya carried out virtually all major projects in Dakshina Kannada tht stand even today as the best contributions to DK.

    Dear Gabbuji,
    We the DK people are also forgetting the name of living legend,a fearless leader,great patriot,Trade union leader who ruled Bombay working class for many years,Son of DK,a true Konkani leader,above all who gifted the great railway project KONKAN RAILWAY to Coastal Karnataka.Without George sir the project would have come into existance.Unfortunaley today he is ailing and put up at Delhi.We the people of Konkan have a bounden duty to bring him here at his evening of life and honour him for his great contribution to D.K. I wonder can this be materailised before it is too late.Are we getting forgetful,disgreatful?

    @KRPrabhu, Mangalore/Banglore,

    I agree with what you penned about George Fernandes. He is one more tall personality from DK who contributed immensely and selflessly wherever he went. Konkan Railways is his Baby. We, Mangaloreans are very poor in identifying people who really worked selflessly for society, rather people along coastal belt glorify some trivial leaders and glorify them. George Fernades, Srinivas Malya are not just personalities - they are concepts, they are milestones, they are legends. Working selflessly is a tough challenge - few have succeeded in it. If we forget people like George, Srinivas Mallya, we will be the most gratitudeless people.

    My point is dont go after One leader and Name everything in his or her name. Identify Gems in society and make a effort to immortalize them through some symbolic naming, though we know their work will remain forever etched in history.

    BIAL airport project made many politicians and businessmen wealthier by several folds, in no time, in One Single Policy decision - The most prominent gainer in this project is none other than Ex-PM DeveGowa and his family. As Prime Minister of India, Mr.Deve Gowdaji knew all plans well in advance. He did all homework before sanctioning Mega Project like BIAL.

    When BIAL was in infancy of implementation, Deve Gowda's family and his close associates bought land at cheaper rate from farmers residing in and around Devenahalli where the Mega project suppose to come up. Farmers were unaware of the value of their own agricultural land and sold them for peanuts to big powerful people. Innocence and Ignorance of farmers were taked for a ride by these politicians. Farmers are not aware of what a BIAL would look like and what kind of business opportunities it will open in and around international airport. Land along Highway connecting Bangalore-devanahalli also sold out for peanuts. Deve Gowda knew Land rates will sky-rocket once BIAL is sanctioned. A 1,000 ruppes investment on land valued at One crore once this project became operational. Just imagine how many billions of rupees DeveGowda family swallowed in One single policy-Shot. Land grabbed at cheaper rates before BIAL getting approval, and same land costing crores after BIAL got approval. Fantastic idea to make Quick Wealth.

    This is the benefit of remaining in power. You knw exactly which project to implement and where, and u make ur self-interests get a realization. This is the same story and plan behind any major projects funded by government. That is why all businessmen enetr politics these days bcz they saw politicans becoming Giga-dollars businessmen.

    Bangalore really aws built after becoming capital of Karnataka. Prior to 1956, it was Mysore which was the No.1 city and also center of power. Mysore should have been capital of karnataka for right reasons, but somehow Kengal Hanumanthaiah succeeded in making Bangalore as capital city of Karnataka. Bangalore saw real boost in all sectors after becoming a capital. It was Mysore city which held lime light for several centuries when Bangalore was just a small place. Builders of Mysore should have found a suitable place in Karnataka's legacy.

    Most of the important landmarks are named after Kempe Gowda. Biggest busstand in Karnataka ( located at majestic, bangalore) is named after Kempegowda. Virtually everything in Bangalore starting from Railway stations, major roads, governments buidlings, etc. are named after Kempe Gowda. People in power cannot see anyone who worked for people other than Kempe Gowda. I am not against giving name of Kempe Gowda to major landmarks/milestones, but my worry is why all places should be named after Kempe Gowda.

    I sincerely feel Sir M.Vishweshwaraiya's name should have been kept to BIAL. He is the real architect n builder of Bnagloer and Mysore. I feel pity for many lobies involved behind naming of BIAL. Kindly consider names of other people too while naming important places/monuments.

    By the way anyone seen how Kempe Gowda looked like ?

    Is there no other job for Government other than naming or renaming airports or roads? There are so many crimes taking place in Karnataka, floods, no proper roads, no power, no teachers in schools and so on. But it seems government is more interested in renaming the airport. What is the use of renaming the airport? Will it increase employment opportunities? Will it give food to the hungry? Will it create peace in society? Will the crimes stop? If the government is only interested in naming and renaming, then it has no moral right to continue in office.

If they want to save their a_s then they will do simply something to impress Gov. n the public.. same as in mangalore.. they want to rename the Gov.hospitals. I dont know why..? So please spare me i have job.. i am not interested in renaming.. Instead of everyone has to perform their job properly..
