Udupi, Jul 18: Dates and water to break the fast, followed by heavier meals such as chicken biryani, ghee rice and fruits accompanied by delicacies such as Hareera (made with rava) or Sheer Kurma (made with vermicelli)...these and more are on the menu of the district's largest mosque Jamia Masjid. The lavish spread is offered to more than 800 persons every evening for Iftar and afterwards.

With a capacity to accommodate 3,000 worshipers at a time, the Masjid, built at the cost of Rs 4 cr, was inaugurated on August 10, 2012. The previous mosque could house around 300 to 400 members especially during Iftar.

The Udupi Jamia Masjid and Muslim welfare association together organize the Iftar.

The holy month of Ramadan is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting and abstinence. The devout abstain from consuming food and drink from dawn to dusk and engage in charity work. Each evening,  families or friends together break the fast.

Mohammed Moula, president of Muslim Welfare Association said, "Muslims believe that giving food for Iftar (breaking the fast) is a form of charity and is also rewarding. We have a complete booking for all the 30 days of Ramadan from individual sponsors for Iftar."

"The expenses for one Iftar is more than Rs 30,000 to Rs 35,000. People prefer to break the fast with community than at home or hotels without any differences of social status," he said.

At Jamia Masjid, Iftar preparations commence hours before sunset and the meals are kept ready. Iftar is followed by prayers and then the heavier meal follows.

Moula added that Ramadan this year began on July 9 and will continue for 30 days. The fasting begins on a daily basis at sunrise which is around 4.25 am and the Iftar is at sunset at around 7 pm.

“Good deeds of the Ramadan month include fasting, devotion, compassion, generosity, forgiveness and repentance, which we have to adopt in our life for the rest of the year. This is the message of God,” the Moula added.

"Fasting is obligatory on all adult Muslims except those who are ill or travelling. Muslims try to move closer to Almighty Allah, seeking His forgiveness and mercy by offering 'namaz' five times a day as on other days of the year, and also the additional namaz during night called 'Taraweeh' and 'Tahajjud', and also reading of the holy Quran," he said.

The holy month of Ramadan offers an excellent opportunity to lose weight, especially by performing extra namaz, light exercise and eating the right kind of food, recommend by the dietitians.
Fasting is good for one's health because it has spiritual, physical, psychological, and social benefits. However, man-made problems may occur if fasting is not properly practiced.
The globally recognised golden rule of dietary guidelines is that one should eat a variety of food using principles of moderation and balance. Usually, most health problems at this time are likely to arise from inappropriate diet or as a consequence of over-eating and insufficient sleep.
Fasting also improves blood cholesterol profile, reduces gastric acidity, prevents constipation and other digestive problems.
Benefits of fasting appear only in those who maintain their diet, avoiding the high calorie and highly processed foods prepared during this time.
It is very important to have a pre-dawn meal. This helps reduce the time of food deprivation and prevent ketosis. Ketosis is a stage in metabolism occurring when the liver has been depleted of stored glycogen and switches to a chronic fasting mode during long periods of starvation. This is the same reason why breakfast is considered as an important meal of the day.
The body's immediate need at that time of Iftar is to get an easily available energy source in the form of glucose for every living cell, particularly the brain and nerve cells. Dates, juices and soups are good sources of sugars and helps bring low blood glucose to normal levels. They also help maintain water and mineral balance in the body. One should drink as much water as possible between Iftar and bedtime.
Overfeeding during Iftar, is not the right message you are sending to the believers.
    Jazakallah Khair!

Better check with the organizers whether you can join and also inform them you are non muslim and just coming to eat. Otherwise you may end up in trouble if you dont know customs.
Otherwise make friendship with muslims in your neighbourhood, they will be happy to invite you.

Fantastic efforts. What could be the greater generosity than feeding the daylong fasting devotees during this holy month.

Here in Saudi, we have special Iftar camps, serving mineral waters, dates, yoghurt, biriyanis/special Kapsas, deserts etc. for all, irrespective of religion and nationality. Many of our country men make use of the great opportunity.

In South Kanara, this kind of charity in a big scale is first of its kind I guess and may the Allah bless the sponsors for their noble job.
