Bangalore: Brace up for hike in Nandini milk prices

From Our Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore

Bangalore, Jul 19: Nothing comes free. If the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government in Karnataka offered an incentive of Rs 2 per litre to all milk producers and implemented its electoral promise of distributing 30 kgs of rice to all BPL families at Re 1 per kg along with effecting a marginal reduction in the price of diesel, the price of Nandini brand of milk products supplied by the Karnataka Milk Federation is likely to be increased shortly.

Naturally, therefore, the milk consumers across the State and even those having their brew of coffee or tea from hotels and restaurants must be prepared for a price hike as and when the KMF and all the dairies coming under it decide to increase the prices of Nandini milk.

Animal husbandry minister T B Jayachandra, who is also handling the law and parliamentary affairs portfolio, indicated in the State Legislative assembly that the state government was contemplating to increase the price of various varieties of Nandini Milk to take up infrastructure development woks in dairies of Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) and milk unions in various districts.

The minister said the KMF was also considering a proposal to increase the number of outlets selling Nandini milk products across the country.

In a reply to C T Ravi of the BJP during the question hour in the Legislative Assembly, Jayachandra said milk prices were low in the State compared to other states.

Moreover, more funds needs to be mobilised for development of infrastructure, particularly cold storages, he said.

Seeking to justify the move to hike the Nandini milk prices, the minister explained that the milk price per litre is Rs 33 in Kerala, Rs 27 in Tamil Nadu, Rs 29 in Maharashtra, Rs 31 in Goa and Rs 32 in Gujarat.

A final decision on the quantum of the hike and the date for effecting it would be taken after consultations with all stakeholders, he said.

Though the KMF has a turnover over of more than Rs 5500 crore a year, its profit margin was less than Rs 50 crore

The turnover was insufficient for development of infrastructure and upgradation of technology as about Rs 300 crore would be required for development of infrastructure, Jayachandra said.

The KMF has been procuring 55 lakh kg of milk per day in July and a decision has been taken to supply of milk (150 ml) to 35 lakh anganawadi kids and 62 lakh schoolchildren from 1st standard to 10th standard from next month.

The decision to supply milk to school children and anganawadi kids required about four lakh litres of milk per day.

At present, the KMF has been exporting milk products to Indonesia and Bangladesh and a decision was taken to export to Sri Lanka also in the coming days.

The KMF has also been supplying milk to Delhi Milk Scheme and Mother Dairy of Kolkata, he said.

What is not bad? Don’t mix religious issues with this particular issue. One will surely support if it reaches the poor. But who will audit this? Is this hike really goes to poor milk producers. If KMF’s profit comes down due to poor maintenance of infrastructure, then who is to blame. Why then to suck the blood of ordinary tax payers just to fulfill the promise made during the election publicity.
Government says KMF is producing 55,00,000 liters milk and sales is 35,00,000 liters. And the remaining is 10,00,000 litres. If they have to sell this remaining then, KMF must adopt a clever market policy, mainly by reducing the price and not by increasing the price. In addition to this, State should not compare the price with other states.
Please elected these idiots because of BJP’s failure in the state, now, these people also do the same, what good thing they have done to general public?
Election commission and Supreme court must put to an end to all these illogical promises by the party’s during election. During election campaign when the parties promise to give for less, then they must clearly say how they are supporting this and from where they are injecting the funds.

COW STATE GUJARAT MILK PRICES PER LITER IS RS.32/= IT IS HIGHEST AND EVEN IN COWS STATE MALNUTRITION OF CHILDREN, VERY GREAT ACHIEVEMENT.

I AM AGAINST RAISING THE MILK PRICES. THERE SHOULD HAVE A PROTEST NOT TO INCREASE MILK PRICES.

SECONDLY, THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD TAKE PRIORITY AND INVEST IN DAIRY PRODUCTIONS. MILK IS THE NECESSITY ITEM FOR EVERY HUMAN BEING.

THIRDLY, THE FARMERS ARE NOT BENEFITING WITH THE CURRENT MILK PRICES AND GETS LOSS. THE ONLY BENEFIT IS COW DUNG FOR THEIR AGRICULTURE.

IF THE OLD COW IS SOLD THERE WILL HAVE SOME BENEFIT AT LAST.

STEEP INCREASES IN CHICKEN PRICES, PORK, LAMB AND BEEF HAS BEEN A BURDEN TO THE CITIZENS.

THE SAD STATE OF AFFAIR IS VEGETARIANS ARE TURNING TO NON-VEGETARIANS.

Had they told us this is for back up charges of “Free Anna Seve” people would have accepted their claim but development of infrastructure? Which Infrastructure they are talking about and on which area they are going to develop the same? This is the curse of 37% those who voted for Congress and balance 63% will bear the burnt.

Whoever thought congress to be a secular party are mistaken. Its the deeply communal party in the garb of secularism. Its obvious they dont work for the people of this country in general but only for certain communities whom they have kept as backward and illiterate for the votes. But they are quick to call other parties communal just because they help or work for the majorities. All their populistic schemes are from the tax payer's money whereas the tax payer doesnt get any benefit whatsoever but is burdened by the rising prices of the essential commodities. Hopefully people wake up to this reality and overthrow this govt at the center and state.

The best way to hike the milk products not the Milk, hike the prices of Ghee, curds or any milk products, etc which made from milk,
Hike the prices of exports of milk products, that money the government can use the development of infrastructure and upgradation of technology.

Even people in villages go for Nandini Milk now a days.During our times all the families in my neighborhood were producing excess milk and I myself used to carry milk from our home to the so called 'society' before I go to college.Gone are those days. Perhaps we need a milk revolution like that of in Gujarat.

    ISMAIL.K.PERINJE,

You seem to be nervous these days. Yes, I did compare the milk price with other states and still Karnataka milk price was lesser. Moreover prev Govt already gave 2 Rs subsidy to farmers very recently. If this Govt thinks still 2Rs subsidy to be given, it has to be given from state treasury, not from the milk consumers.

Now your govt all set to beat other states in milk price though we are one of the leading milk producers in the country. This is/was your pure election agenda. This will create economical imbalance in the society. Already central govt is scoring towards century of rupees.

First kick out corrupt people, KMF will see profits. Dont give the logic that other states have higher price for milk than Nandini. These corrupt leaders loot and make public companies a pauper.... then pass on the buck to public to fill exchequer again.

I hope the blind supporters of congress who were raving and praising their Sidanna for his 1 Rs rice, cheap liquor and several entitlement schemes will now enjoy paying more for milk and other necessities. What did i say in another post ? "To give it to Peter you need to take it from Paul" - meaning for government to give something free for their vote bank, they have to tax it from others. Karnataka already has one of the highest taxes on petroleum products, very high land tax and the third highest commercial tax in the country. Enjoy the 1 Rs rice and center's food security bill !
