The passengers were identified as Arshad Ali Mushtaq Ahmed (30) from Bhatkal, his wife Fathima Nasreen (29) and their four-year-old son.

Two gold biscuits and a couple of gold chains were part of the loot. The gold was wrapped up and hidden in undergarments found in her person.

Is there a competition between Bhatkal and Kasargod. Who can smuggle more gold or who will get caught at Mangalore airport. Can imagine the amount gold which got melted during the air crash in 2010 at Bajpe.

Somebody please explain, why NRI's r not allowed to bring gold or there is limitation?
How does it make any change on only in Indian economy?
It seems foolish foreign rules. Don't just judge people as smugglers. This kind of rules are forcing people to do this kind of acts.
I'll be happy if somebody here to answer me. - Thank you.

Its right think that govt of India put this import tax on gold Our gold import has increased tremendously loading on to balance of payment deficit it further loads economy and weakening of rupee instead bring in money thru bank draft and invest in gold mutual fund it is safe no body can rob and you take actual gold whenever you require anyway As a NRI you dont pay income tax in addition you will help nation to get valuable foreign currency

Mr.Hamdan, Dubai : Dubai customs are not bothered whether you carry a tonne outside their territory. But the Indian Govt.is bothered because of loss of revenue by way of customs duty.

Hamdan, now a days no country is safe in terms of anti national activities, hence there is very close intelligence sharing facility exists between countries..i believe as soon as these couples passed through security check in Dubai, Dubai authorities alerted Indian intelligence..If Dubai police catch them it will be very long diplomatic process to deport them..so Dubai authorities let off these couple in Dubai & tipped Indian customs..

    Dear,
From Dubai you can carry tons of gold if it is not stolen and you have bought from a shop. In India you can carry stolen gold not bought. Customs needs to make on everything. gold rate is almost equivalent around the world so its a stupidity to charge a customs duty again while you enter in India. In India if you buy a gram of 24c/22c gold i am sure the purity will not be more 18c, but same in Dubai or any developed nations you ll get what you have paid for. India is becoming more more and worst place to live.

Please recover the tax and penalty for not disclosing the gold and allow them to go as this is far far better than moral policing, woman beating, and rapes.

Good going peace lover, i read these type of comments each & every time when somebody caught in mangalore Airport..If they pay tax & penalty the value of Gold may exceed current Indian price of Gold!!..Instead why can't you consider these people as antinational & antisocial (same as women beating, rape etc,.) since, even after numerous incidents of smuggling reported at manglore Airport still these people enjoy breaking law!!..Its Gold not rice or sugar to bring in Kgs or Kwintals..

After struggling to earn here in Gulf and smuggling Gold back home then with hell of risks I prefer to suggest:

"Tanisq" is a TATA company having pure Gold and not less than UAE No. 1 DAMAS quality. They have a good scheme and one can reserve Gold by paying on instalments. It's a good Investment for a family.

Maximum they could have earned 6.75 lacks. Is it worth for the entire family to forsake the entire Dubai job for this money.

When are the people going to stop this greed for gold that has reached extremes. They say gold is a precious metal and it will ruin this precious country that has to shell out $50 Billion of foreign exchange. Banning import of gold will not serve the purpose as it will give rise to smuggling. A huge levy in the form of Tax or Duties should be there. Serious thinking is required.
