Kundapur: 19-year-old girl sets herself on fire, dies in hospital

Kundapur, Jul 21: The girl who allegedly set herself on fire at Kotebagilu on Saturday July 20 breathed her last in Wenlock hospital, Mangalore later in the night, her family said.

The family members as well as the police left for Mangalore and a case is expected to be registered in the afternoon, sources said.

Fed up of constant harassment by her alcoholic uncle, the young girl allegedly set herself afire in a bid to end her life. The incident occured at Kotebagilu in Tallur here on Saturday July 20 night.

The girl, identified as Chaitra (19), daughter of Ratna Mogaveerti, suffered severe burn injuries and is battling for life.

The girl's father got married to another woman and is staying elsewhere. Chaitra lives with her mother at Kotebagilu.

As per Ratna's statement, Chaitra's uncle Sheena Mogaveera used to come home drunk every night and beat his niece.

On Saturday night too he attacked her, and unable to take it anymore,  Chaitra poured kerosene and set herself on fire, it is said. The locals who rushed to the spot prevented the fire from causing damage to the house and took her to Kundapur government hospital.

The doctors who examined her said that she had suffered 90 percent burns and her survival was doubtful. Nevertheless, she was shifted to Wenlock hospital in Mangalore for further treatment.
