Moodbidri: Ex-serviceman devotes himself to propagation of nature

Moodbidri, Jul 21: Having served the country for years, an ex-serviceman now treads the field of horticulture, back in his hometown. Jaya Shetty, 71-year-old retired military man, is a fitting example of hard work and inspiration to many.

A resident of Bannadka village, Alangar, Moodbidri, after completing primary education in Moodbidri Jain High School, Shetty had to discontinue his studies due to poverty. From his first job in a canteen in Mumbai, Shetty worked his way up and joined the Indian Navy as a sailor in 1964. He was a leading seaman by the time he applied for voluntary retirement.

Life in Navy

Jaya Shetty was part of Navy during the India-Pakistan war in 1965 and in 1971 which was for the liberation of Bangladesh from Pakistan. He has also mastered English and Russian languages during his tenure in the Navy. Besides, he has also visited Singapore, Malaysia, France, England, Russia, and some countries in Africa.

Post-retirement life amidst nature

Soon after retirement, Shetty devoted his life to plantation and horticulture. In his dedicated life amidst nature, he has used nearly four acres of barren land at Chillimbi, Belvai, to plant several cashew trees. Besides, he also planted coconut trees, banana plants, and mango trees on another four acres of land intending to lead the rest of his life amidst nature.

Having learnt that the region of Chilimbi, Belvai, always faced a shortage of water, Shetty has come up with a solution for irrigation. In an attempt to properly make use of rain water, he built a vented dam on his land, nearly eight years ago. Apart from the use of one truck-load of granite (black) stones and about 25 sacks of cement, he himself worked on its construction. The vented dam helped store additional water constructively stopping the wastage of rain water.

Presently, the former navy man has engaged himself in developing the neglected pond at Chillimbi, the border of Udupi-Mangalore district. Besides extending the pond, he has constructed footsteps, removed slush and hyacinth voluntarily.

Shetty propagates a plastic-free society. When people throw wastes and plastic all around, he cleans up the place. In addition, he also picks up such waste right in front of the offenders in an attempt to create awareness.

Shetty is also a part of literacy drives and other social activities. A rationalist, he has been creating awareness against superstition and other existing social evils in the region.

Mr.shetty shows everyone a way - after retirement some serious work to do like plantation, cleaning up waste, real concern for nature n society. His workaholic-disciplined life-style in Navy can not keep him idle during his retirement time. His plan to channelize energy in right direction is most appreciable. He stands up as a true example to many organizations that exploit unemployed youth. Many youth have lost direction in life and do not understand purpose n meaning of life. I can see Mr.Shetty beaming with fulfillment of life and also finding true meaning in his life. Good to know that he uses time n opportunity to add value to society n Nature. Infact, he is creating opportunities for many who see him as role model. At 72, your spirit goes strong shetty sir. Your life-style is fantastic - I just loved this informative true story. It will inspire many. A life filled with satisfaction - dream to live like you sir !! I pray good health and safety in your retired life. Your work/life is your message. Thank you.

Kudos to Mr. Shetty for keeping your enthisiasm at your age where people would like to relax and get into unnecessary family politics. You are a model for the younger generation. This is why 2 years of army training must be compulsory for all the students before completion of graduation.. this will give a sense of self esteem to the citizens. I appreciate Daiji World for highlighting this positive article. we do have millions of citizens like Mr. Shetty across the country and i wish that all the news channels must highlight them in the prime page and prime time and move all the degusting and negative news to the last page. Our children can read and take good out of these great men and women of the country.

He is no ordinary Navyman. He was a diver and Commando it seems and must have had many brave exploits during his service.Unfortunately no one recognized his value in his district where he is living.A man who has so much pent up energy to do good to society has to express himself through these acts.Wish him every success and a long and happy life to be a beacon to family and all those who come in contact with him. I thank Daiji for letting us know about him.

Can you also work, with your dad and the people of your village to fix the well next to the road without boundary. Very dangerous and accident in waiting.

    Nice.

He looks more in phyical shape than most youths half of his age.

Regarding boundary to well,,, there could be one but does not appear to be because of camera angle.

As long as he is happy doing what he is doing its great going...

    Yes, You are right .
There is indeed a barrier between the road & the pond, atleast say 3-4 levels .
But that is not rightly captured in the photograph.
