Mangalore: Body of Vinay Vaz (24) found near Ullal bridge

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (NM)

Mangalore, Jul 21: Vinay Vaz (24), who went missing after accidentally falling into Netravati river on the night of July 19, was found dead near Ullal bridge at Kotekar here on Sunday July 21.

The body was recovered and shifted to Wenlock mortuary.

It is said that Vinay was among a group of 700 persons from Karwar diocese returning from a week-long youth retreat in Kerala. The group consisted of 25 priests, 10 nuns and youngsters.

Vinay, who was a parishioner of Infant Jesus Church, Sirsi, was the leader of his church team, and incharge of 48 youths. He had booked the tickets of all his team members and they had occupied berth numbers 8 to 12 of Netravati Express. The train was jampacked.

Speaking to daijiworld, Fr Wilson Fernandes, parish priest of Sirsi church said that on the night of July 19, at around 11.15, the train slowed down while passing through Ullal bridge. Vinay, who was new to this region, thought that the train had reached Mangalore and stepped out. He directly fell into the river below. The injury on his head indicated that he might have hit the protective barrier of the bridge first before falling into the river.

The assistant leader of the group who was nearby heard the sound of Vinay falling and called the others. The train's chain was pulled and railway authorities too arrived at the spot. The train stopped for about 40 minutes, and resumed its journey. Five persons of the teams including priests got down at Mangalore junction while the rest continued the journey to Kumta.

Fr Richard Lasrado, parish priest of Thokur church, who helped the group in dealing with the situation, spoke to daijiworld and said, "We are thankful to Sirsi Lokayukta DySP Umesh Shet who helping registering the case, as the police had first asked us to approach the railway police." The case was registered in Ullal police station and with railway police.

Son of Wilson Vaz, Vinay was the ICYM treasurer of Sirsi parish. "Vinay was a leader in the making. He had great dreams and wanted to become the event manager of Karwar. For this purpose, he had even bought a sound system all the way from Thailand," said Fr Wilson.

Death will come like a thief (Bible)- for everyone. Dont wait for Kaliyuga or tsunami or landslides. Such small accidents are enough to finish anyone.
Thanks to GOD we don't believe in rebirth in this evil world where people run behind money and career and parties and mortals- making them gods?.
Be carefull whom u hate -since u may b reborn as the one whom u hate-taliban?. Hate the sin- not the sinner. Pray for the sinners to know the truth and be positive always. negativity and fear comes from demons and their father- the devil.

Dear Vinay, no one knows when God will call us, other wise how can you get down on Nethravathi bridge thinking that railway station has come. Any railway station will be having displayed Boards, or written some where about the station, the lights will be on, and you can see some shops. Dear Vinay how can you get down where there is bridge's protective barrier that too with full darkness, that means God really called you to his kingdom. You have done beautiful retreat with strong faith for which God really wanted you to come to his kingdom. I am sure you are in arms of Jesus for ever vinay. May God strengthen your family to bare the loss of your place and fill them with positive spirit.

Really, it's a sad incident and unfortunate but different descriptions and explanations are given, but the real fact is only "VINAY VAZ " know's and some of his team members. But it's mentioned, saying two young guy's are drunk state sleeping on floor near the Door and one is missing. I do not believe that " VINAY VAZ " was drunk because when you go to Potta Retreat Centre, you will be the happiest person and so much joy, while you return. And so much responsibility is taken by Vinay, it impossible him to drink, even though, the clear appreciation and praising about Vinay by Priest, it is clear that it's happened in his sleep or he was in Dream and walked out to the wrong direction and the tragedy struck to the young n promising Boy. Anyway, really sad to read about the incident and tragedy. I pray to Almighty to grant him Eternal Life, give peace and strength to over come his loss to his Parents, family members, Relatives and Friends. Let his Soul Rest in Peace.

I do not know Vinay, but when I read about the way he died, I cried. Vinay, you hear my sad words from Heaven, atleast you could have looked down for a second before you put your foot down, why did you think that was Mangalore railway station, at stations there will be light always, at the bridge it must have been dark, how come you put you foot down in darkness. I am very sorry and I pray for your soul, I still cry.

I happened to travel in the same train bogie with the Karwar group while returning from the retreat centre. I have witnessed Vinay taking lead in arranging seats for his group in the train and attending to the needs of Preists & nuns in his group.
It is sad that he is no more. Hard to believe but the death comes like a thief but in Vinay"s case he was well prepared as he was coming back from a 5 days retreat from Divine retreat centre.
May his soul rest in peace. My condolences to his family members and all his group members & friends

Very Unfortunate incident where the victim went out for good cause and unable to make it home. “May his Soul Rest in Peace” Very sad news..

I recall almost similar incident, it was in the year 1998 on my first visit to India, I had desire to take Konkan Railway train journey from Bombay to Mangalore. A young man carelessly sitting on door leaving his legs wide out the train, the train was at full speed, when it was passing through one of the station, his both legs brushed out to the concrete platform, since he was holding tight he survived with injury on his legs..
I have seen this many time people are standing on the train door passage to breath fresh air without holding the support, this is very dangerous. “This Is Your Life- You Have To Save It..

I cannot think how such cruel fate befell on Vinay Vaz. Nothing will console his parents, dear ones. His life tragedy can only be a lesson to all.

In Vinay's case, he accidentally mistook ullal bridge for Mangalore railway station. But those who sit near Train doors leisurely n carelessly, and those who stand near steps of buses, be doubly sure of your safety. An express bus with full capacity plying between Moodabidri and Mangalore. Young bus cleaner was enthusiastically shouting - right poyi. Bus started speeding when driver noticed another bus coming behind. bus cleaner was hanging out of bus was hit to protective grills of Bridge - He died on spot. Cant forget that incident from my memory.

I mentioned a mishap happened in a train journey. I repeat here for good intention.

A night train journey from Bangalore to Mangalore, after sakleshpur train started to move slowly through tunnels n huge bridges. Near the door of one general compartment, two heavily drunk youths were sleeping. They were totally intoxicated n were blocking passage to toilet. Around 3am ( wee hours), one copassenger told that one person among two is missing. It was a shock when I overheard that lady saying abt missing person near door. No clue as to where he fell in western ghats. I prayed for his safety, wherever he fell. Sitting near doors is really dangerous - especially during night.

Pray for departed soul of Vinay Vaz. All dreams n hope shattered. Gods will.

Very sad death. Accidental fall to river when the train stopped before the station and this brave young man assumed that it was the railway station was just to confirm his date with destiny. When those who dont know him feel so sad on hearing this tragic death, i can imagine the trauma and pain the near and dear ones would be going through. May God rest the departed soul in piece

The trains will be at slow motion or stop at Ullal bridge for sometime to get the signal. Many Passengers step down at this spot. In rainy season it is very dangerous coz you wont no whether the spot you jump is a land or water.
Vinay made his short life memorable one. Actively involved in the services of church, god loved him more and called him for eternal rest.God must have heard his prayers during the retreat and lifted him to rejoice in heaven.
May god give strength to the family members to bear this irreparable loss.

I am reading what Fr. Wilson has told this web-site again and again.
How is it possible- for God's sake? No lights in the train? Pitch Dark outside? How did he keep his first step out? Did he not catch on the side handles for support? What on earth was happening in a train that was jam-packed?? Feel sorry that a young life has been snuffed out
just like that... Can however never recall such incidents happening anywhere!
    God bless his soul.
