Bangalore: By-polls for two Lok Sabha constituencies on Aug 21

Daijiworld Media Network – Bangalore (NM)

Bangalore, Jul 21: The by-elections for Bangalore Rural and Mandya Lok Sabha constituencies will be held on August 21, the chief election commission has announced. The seats were left vacant after the resignation of state JD(S) president H D Kumaraswamy (Bangalore rural) and Cheluvaraya Swamy (Mandya) from their MP posts.

H D Kumarswamy and Cheluvaraya Swamy had submitted their resignation from the posts after they were elected as members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in the last state election.

“The notification for the by-polls will be issued on July 21. The last date to file nomination is on August 3 and the scrutiny of nominations will take place on August 5,” a release stated.

The last date to withdraw the nomination is August 7. The polling will be held on August 21 between 8 am and 5 pm and the counting of votes will be on August 24.

The code of conduct in both the constituencies shall come into force with immediate effect, the release further stated.

Matter of prestige for Congress

This is the first Lok Sabha by-election scheduled to be held after the new Congress government took charge of the state.

Earlier, the JD(S) had won the MP seats in both the constituencies. The election is seen as a matter of prestige for the ruling Congress government.

As soon as the time-table of Lok Sabha election was announced, opposition leader of the state Assembly H D Kumaraswamy set the party's ball rolling to try and get the seats back in JD(S) fold.

On the other hand, the recent clash between Mandya district Congress president Athmananda and district incharge minister Ambareesh may prove costly for the party.

Tenure of the current parliament remained year or less ...Why EC not considered to wait for next election. It may be early election for LS either?

As far as two LS seats considered it is a do or die for Siddu and winning two seats for Congress will make it as moral boosting for LS general election. The election constituencies are Vokkaliga bastion and therefore HDK's prestige also in stake!Apart from that BJP has no stake @ all and Coming LS election BJP may bag 2-3 seats or less ....If aligned with BSY, it could be benefited for another 2 seats.

These politicians if cant stick to their election for fie years, then why would they contest elections ? HDK, Cheluvasamy jumped like monkey from MP seat to MLA seat. Just couple of months to go into lokasabha elections, and this by-elections is waste of public money and time. Though it is a constitutional mandate to conduct elections to vacant seats, this particular election defies all reason.

For congress it wil be question of pride, and for opposition it will be trying their luck (semifinal) before lokasabha polls. Huge chunk of money n liquor will flow from all concerned candidates. Eligible electorate can claim their share during elections, bcz after elections these candidates show their back.

I am expecting Digvijayji and Modiji to come for campaigning to test their charisma to aTTract voters. Diggy recently claimed he is more hindhu than Modi. Lets see how poiltical discourse in India open up for 2014. Healthy fight - good for country.

I agree with you Ramesh. Elected MP will have hardly six months time, then again general parliament polls. Total waste of money, energy and sources.
