Mangalore, Jul 22: Chaos prevailed at United Toyota at Padil here on Monday July 22 after disgruntled employees went on strike against the management over various issues.

The employees claimed that the company officials, particularly general manager Sadanand, service manager Ashwin and body manager Ravindra Bangera had been playing politics and not treating the employees as they should.

They alleged that there was groupism in the firm with one group associating itself with the general manager. "The employees are ill-treated and each and every minor mistake is made a big issue and the erring person is transferred to another department. Also salary is deducted for every small mistake without prior notice," they alleged.

Expressing disappoinment over the functioning of the management, one of the employees said that there had been no increment in salaries for a long time and alleged that one of employees had died because he was not given advance salary for treatment when he requested.

"An employee who was sick had requested his salary in advance so that he could afford medical treatment, but his request was rejected. He later died as he had no money for treatment," he said.

The protestors demanded that the managing directors of the company meet them personally.

One of the managing directors, Prabhakar Rao arrived at the spot along with other higher officials and spoke to the protestors and listened to their demands.

However, minor tension prevailed when he ordered the media to leave the premises, however, the employees insisted on media's presence. Rao held a meeting with the protestors after the media left for a brief period.

Speaking to media persons later, Rao said that the other MDs of the company, Ganesh Rao and Ramgopal Rao, were out of station and that they were unaware of the issues. "We came to know about these issues only today. The problems will be brought to the notice of the other MDs and the matter would be resolved in the next four to five days," he assured.

"The main problem has been lack of communication," he added.

Meanwhile, customers who had come to get their vehicles serviced also had a tiff with the general manager as the work had stopped because of the strike. A couple of tourist vehicle drivers said that they had been hired on duty by tourists and needed their vehicles serviced immediately. However, because of the protest their vehicles remained untouched, they said.

Mangalore rural police arrived at the spot and brought the situation under control.

This is not true at all. I have worked in United Toyota in the past and the management is excellent its probably one of the few auto dealers in mangalore who take very good care of the employees. I also have friends who work there and I know that this year all employees were given a good increment and a bonus. Also, I am told most of the staff were forcefully asked to join the protest even though they did not want to be part of the baseless strike. A lot of false information has been given by few employees who are trouble makers. All the information given by a few employees is not true.

This is an exteme and irregular step that the manager has taken towards thousands of employees as the racism and priorities are reaching a complete different level hence we need to support what difference we have felt with the manager treating us at the end of the day when all the needed is done by the workers in the factory hence the manager has to be punished at any cost is what i believe

I bought a new Toyota Etios 11 months back and the car is no doubt, excellent compared many Indian cars. It is however sad to mention that Mangalore based United Toyota's "after-sales service" is hopeless. I am from Udupi and I had to take my car for a few manufacturing defects all the way to Mangalore putting Rs.700/- petrol. The staff was completely irresponsible, instead repairing over and above, they charged me Rs.100 for just an entry in their workshop. Even after that, I had to speak to not less than 10 people explaining the same problem again and again over the phone, but no action has been taken yet. Now they have promised me that the required repair work will be done in their Udyavar workshop, which they said that they are going to start shortly. Im still putting my fingers crossed !!! I dont know whether I should blame myself or Toyota for buying their vehicle !

Im the proud owner of Toyota Corolla .

But the service and standard was every good during the early times of 2003 when the service managers where qualified and promising .

This guy is a Irresponsible fellow . Once i called for toeing my vehicle . When my vehicle broke down i had called checking the website for this dealer contact and managed to get Mr.sadanand number.

The reply i got was our toeing vehicle is under repair . You can contact other dealer in Karnataka. Such a irresponsible  I had also raised this concern to Toyota dealership.

I think Toyota have to appoint one person from their head office to monitor all the ongoing things including worker issues. Only because of these cheap mentality people like sadananda toyota will loose its name and respect. You cannot force ur employee to work more time without pay,one of my friend working there and i know the situation very well, company is forcing workers to extend their duty time without pay and the word will be like Do it or Exit. Somebody should do something about this also.

People dont comment randomly if you dont know whats the real issue

First of all let me clarify things

This is Dealership run by Aroor Family . Due to the unavailability of Service manager in Toyota 2006 Mr.Sadanda Gowda was recruited and appointed as the service manager . After his joining lot of changes have been made . Salaries have been cut off . Lot of people where fired out . As the MD blindly listens to his foolish comments . The MD directly fires the employees. He is not an eligible manager he cant even speak to customer and his english is to bad. Angered or Service failure customers he will never address. He has formed one own team of people like the Assistant Manager and Body manager who where technicians where promoted as Managers. The revolt should have been much before . Many lost the jobs. Many have cried cursed.

And i was one among them to resign .

He is a pathetic manager . Non friendly to customers . People don't believe me call Toyota number ask them to connect to GM and see if he picks the call for any service or sales issue .

I agree with Peter. The labour class of Mangalore is pathetic.
They have no interest to work. They will repeatedly stare at the clock when closing time is nearing and work very slowly as its closing time anyway.
They'll take so many leaves on account of religious and family functions.
Most of them are members of their local 'Friends' club, which they regard as some officers club!
These clubs have political links and employers will have to worry about that also.

Whereas labourers from UP,Bihar are only bothered about their work and have a no nonsense attitude.
Which is why they are in large numbers all over Mangalore!

Yes, Of course... u r right... always have a helping hand... But now the status of most of the automobile showrooms n service centre employees in Mangalore is very bad.... they wil get some 6000 per month.. no increment... upon that consultants have to roam around the city, find customers n sell the car... these poor employees have to look after their families....may be their sick parents... school fee of their children... is this the salary enough...????I personally know these guys...they sometimes starve n work.....

How many MDs are there? Let only one MD to tackle the problem. One MD pass over the problem to another MD. District labour commissioner has to take strict action on employers who employ the workers without facilities and for low wages. Now everything is costlier. If govt is not able to fix a suitable salary for private employees for maintenance of their family who will ask their grievances. Most private employers are blood suckers. They are not bothered about the future of employees. There should not be difference between private and govt. employees.

I think that, if the things are like this ,then soon employees will take control the companies in many places.Because the rates of every item has gone up & no hike in salary means very bad.If employees joining with management then only they will get justice.

If every employ is provided with Health Insurance Policy, then one major problem wouldn't have happened.
Every organization will have these labor problems- as not all are the same & some impose some control or turn the screws tighter reasonably or unreasonably. H R would have solved this problem before it blew like this.
