Madikeri, Jul 23: A gang of ten persons has been reportedly blackmailing and extorting money from businessmen in Mangalore, Bangalore and Kerala by using young girls.

The Madikeri police who have been trying to nab the gang, have successfully arrested three and are hunting for the rest of the gang members.

As per a complaint registered by one Anoop at Kadri police station in Mangalore, a girl used to visit his stationery shop, speak in a friendly way with him and got his phone number.Thereafter she developed friendship with Anoop. A few weeks later she invited Anoop to Madikeri. When Anoop reached Madikeri, he was welcomed by a man who escorted him to a guest house on behalf of that girl. In the guest house, even as the girl was talking to Anoop, a gang of three entered the guest house and objected to his presence with the girl. To hide this incident, the three men demanded money from him. He gave away Rs 5,000 and his gold chain worth Rs 50,000.

This is one of the several cases registered in Mangalore, Bangalore and Kerala police station.

The three prime accused are Yaqoob Ali from Madikeri, Rehaman Ali from Uppinangady and Manikanta from Kasargod.

In a similar incident, Mangalore-based businessman Ratan D'Souza was kidnapped from Bangalore with the help of a girl. Bangalore police have identified Yaqoob as the prime suspect in this kidnap case.

Kadri police station has another case against Abdul Rehaman pertaining to blackmail of a Kerala resident in a similar way.

Speaking to daijiworld Madikeri police commissioner Anucheth said that all ten members including two girls will be arrested soon with the help of the three men who have been nabbed.

CCB circle inspector R Satish Kumar, other police officials Mohan, Sukumar, Sitarama, Raja, Yogesh, Niranahana, Theertha Kumar and Rajesh assisted in the operation.

Instead of agreeing to meet in Madikeri by compromising the business of the stationery shop, he should have invited the girl to Mangalore, to be on the safer side.

    Dr Prakash Sir...
What do you mean 'At least once women have shown their true colour'?
Women always show their true colour.
Men prefer to be 'colour blind'when it suits them!
Take our very own Anoop! He was colour blind till he reached Madikeri guest house. Then he became alright. Talking of true colour, there are many Anoop's in M'lore..Dr!Just waiting for a chance to go to Madikeri,Hukkeri,Talicheeri,or even Kotekar Beeri to pick up berries!

There is a saying "Beauty killed the beast" in the same way "Beauty killed the Brains". Against beauty man is a weakling. Anoop's brain went for a sixer against a beauty.

    Bhandarkar,
    Marvelous words about coorgi beauty.

My lost memories have been re-kindled...but memories shall remain memories only. But your poetic words will cherish in my life rather than lost memories.

    Thanks

What is the purpose of showing the culprits with covered face. Can anyone be cautious of these culprits in future when they come out of jail (if at all they go behind the bars)? Let the public know who they are. We find in all media, that when the culprits are caught they are shown with covered faces, instead, law enforcement people, specially the police, are shown posing for the photo. Are we interested to know who caught them or the criminals. Can someone explain here if it is the rule of the law?

When a crime is committed and reported in India, primarily there are three Indian Criminal Laws which come into picture. In addition to that there are special criminal laws applicable deepening upon on the nature of crime committed & reported. Primary criminal Laws are i.e. 1. Indian Penal Code 1860, 2.Code Criminal Procedure 1973, 3.Indian Evidence Act 1872

When a crime is committed by unknown person/s, relevant section 9 of Indian Evidence Act 1872 insist for identification parade of the unknown accused arrested persons and such ID parade to be conducted as soon practicable preferably by the authorized magistrate. This piece of evidence (report/ memo prepared by the magistrate) is admissible under Sec 162 Cr. P.C, during the said Criminal case trail. However this evidence too is subject to cross examination. If this evidence is proved beyond reasonable doubt, then it is a corroborative price of evidence, which helps in conviction of the accused/ culprits.

In such above said case, the police shall not reveal unknown accused identity before identification Parade. If unknown accused person’s faces are shown to the general public including the prosecution witness before the ID Parade and later the ID parade held, then this corroborative piece evidence will not have much value in the eye of law and this may leads to accused acquittal.

One of objective of the Law is to punish the accused on the basis of evidence submitted before the court of Law, but certainly not the innocents, who is just arrested for the alleged crime by the investigation team.

I hope it gives clear explanation & legal reason for covering faces of unknown/ unidentified accused persons before ID parade held.

Mr. Abdul, Udupi, thank you very much for explaining the law. Quite impressed with your knowledge. But in most of the cases, only in the initial stage the media is showing such pictorial news. Do we really get the news when the final verdict is given. In India, all such cases are dragged for years together (tariq pe tariq, tariq pe tarig) in the court and then the public forgets. This is what we experience in our democratic country.
