Udupi: Rotten meat sold at mutton stall - Angry locals force it shut

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi

Udupi, Jul 24: The people of Adi Udupi on Wednesday July 24 staged a protest in front of a meat stall here that allegedly sold rotten mutton.

It is said that people who bought mutton from Bhavani mutton stall found worms in the meat.

Nearly 100 kg of meat was found to be rotten at the stall, it is learnt.

Angry locals who gathered at the spot forcibly shut down the stall in protest.

Around 40 people from Malpe had bought mutton from the stall as part of a vow at Marigudi, Kaup. They bought the meat at 4 am, and on reaching home, found worms in it. They went back to return the meat.

The people gathered at the stall in large numbers, and an argument ensued that soon turned into chaos. Sources said that the stall owner tried to escape.

Police inspector Lingaraju arrived at the spot and brought the situation under control.

Speaking to daijiworld, Lingaraju said that a complaint regarding stale meat was given by Sadananda Bangera and Chandrakant. Altogether, 150 kg of meat was bought from the stall, he said.

Pradeep of Bhavani mutton stall, against whom the complaint was made, paid back the money to the customers but maintained that the meat was freshly chopped on Tuesday night, hours before it was sold, and that it was not his fault but of the customers who may not have stored it properly.

The matter was finally settled between the parties and no FIR was filed.

For 40 buyers 150 KG. meat is not much. Since it was for offering to Mari Gudi at Kaup, they purchased it collectively, which you can see from the sacks in the picture, and may be stored the same in Malpe Dry Fish storage area. Dry fish has worms if not properly dried and these worms may have entered the sacks.

Do you think during cutting of 150 kilo meat, say at least 3 to 5 sheep, none of the purchasers noticed these worms?
There is a liver or lungs of the sheep hanging in the shop. It may be from one of the sheep. They should have checked for worms in that and also in the shop area. All worms wont be in the meat only..!!
Like I said earlier, this is just to get their money back, which they got, when they made a big noise. Poor shop-keeper.
Loser of Rs.400 x 150 Kgs. or the cost of the sheep.
I think this is sheer high-handedness of the purchasers.

I am wondering, how come out of 40 people who purchased the meat and were present at the time the butcher was chopping not a single person noticed any worms. At least they could have smelt bad odor of the meat. So strange.

If found guilty the owner should be punished and the meat stall license should be

    Dear All,
As I had seen and visited these stalls personally, I feel following should be strictly take care by the Udupi Municipality:-
    1. Hygiene conditions of these stalls is very poor. Some guidelines in maintaining the cleanliness should be formed and implemented.
    2. Drainage condition is also very bad. It stinks like a hell and I am sure many people are infected with serious deceases because of this.
    3. There should be a separate butcher or slaughtering house and only these shops are permitted to sell the meat.
    4. Those who do not maintain the shop well should be removed of their license immediately.

India is not living in STONE age.
India is a developing country -we have Food inspection laws- sanitation -hygiene - health etc.
There are meat handling- processing techniques -cold-chiller equipments are available .
These laws and procedures and standards are to be strictly followed.
we are a civilized nation -not run by the law of the jungle .
    Let the health inspectors- hygiene-sanitary-
inspectors regularly with strict routine check out on all food dispensing/selling retail stores.
All restaurants- bakeries - any food dispensing store come under the specific laws-let the public be aware and take strong-affirmative action against the law breakers.
    Immediately.
This is the only way to follow the norms-standards- and educate the public and their rights.
There should be a cold chain net work-
clean -enough water supply - no flies or insects - no dust etc.
Let it be clean -no smell of blood or bad odor -be very strict.

It says above - a total of 150 Kg. meat was bought -
When it was bought, was it taken in one lot and stored in one place by the buyers?
Then there is every chance the worms made way into the meat where it was stored.
As some one said here, in Udupi mutton sold from freshly slauthered sheep and the shop fellow also maintaining the same.

When the buyer found out worms had entered the meat from the place where he had stored, he has wrongly put the blame on the shop-keeper, to recover the money.

This may be first of it's kind of case, if it is true.

The amount of pesticides and insecticides used on vegetables and fruits slowly increases the risk of cancer and food poisoning. All kinds of food have their own risk these days because of selfish humans and greed for more money compromising health. But you have a lot of advantages by eating meat too.

Haa..haa..Wonderful comment..It seems crazy, but near to reality.I have to recall my one experience,in 1988,I went with my Christian friend to non veg hotel in Udupi. I ordered chicken biryani, whereas my friend ordered mutton biryani. The moment,my friend tasted mutton,he shouted and screamed "this is not mutton, this is not mutton" ,On hearing his scream, owner who was sitting in the cash counter rushed to us and pleaded not to make GALATA..He said "We will serve you fresh one and no need to pay for your lunch!!.That incident always prevents me from ordering mutton item in hotels.I prefer chicken or fish..

    THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS...
MUTTON SHOP OWNER WOULD DEFINITELY KNOW THE TRUE STATUS OF THE MUTTON...
IN UDUPI MUTTON SOLD IS GENERALLY FRESHLY SLAUGHTERED...
ONES WHICH COME TO THE GULF ARE SLAUGHTERED IN INDIA AND TRAVEL IN CHILLERS UNTO THE STALLS...
FRESH MUTTON MUST NOT HAVE WORMS UNLESS IT IS A SICK SHEEP...
ANYWAY IT IS A BLESSING THAT INNOCENT PEOPLE WERE ALARMED BY THE WORMS PRESENT IN IT AND DID NOT CONSUME...
THIS SHOP MUST OPEN IN CHINA...
IT MAY HAVE STAMPEDE OF CUSTOMERS WANTING TO BUY THE WORMS...
