Beltangady: Close shave for elderly couple as TV explodes, shed destroyed

Daijiworld Media Network - Beltangady

Beltangady, Jul 27: An elderly couple had a close shave after their television exploded all of a sudden while they were watching a programme. The cowshed next to their house was completely gutted in the incident.

The incident occured at the house of retired police officer Subbarao and his wife Jalajakshi in Kukkedi here.

In between the programme, Subbarao got up and went to another room, while Jalajakshi went to the bathroom.

At that moment, the television, which they had newly bought just about one-and-a-half years ago, suddenly exploded.

The impact of the explosion was such that the tiles and beams of the house got damaged.

The spark generated by the blast spread to the cowshed that was adjacent to the house and the dry grass stored there caught fire. The roof of the cowshed too was destroyed.

The cows that were in the shed were immediately rescued from the fire and brought to safety.

A loss of Rs 2 lac has been estimated, said the owner of the house. Jalajakshi who was shaken by the incident said that she and her husband were lucky to escape as they had gone out of the TV room at that moment.

The cause for the explosion has not yet been ascertained. It is suspected that short circuit or high voltage might have resulted in the blast.

This is very serious matter. The brand of the TV should be disclosed and the public having such a brand TV should take care. An FIR should be lodged against the TV manufacturer and the dealer. All the TV's of this brand should be withdrawn from the market till such time the reason for this mishap is identified and corrected. Many car manufacturers in India and abroad do this.
Daijiworld should take up this cause.

Bro, when there is such huge voltage fluctuation due to faulty power supply done by using cheap equipments and transmission such things are possible and even though it sounds like an explosion it is actually in all probability an "implosion' of the CRT!! In this part of the world have you seen how fast electrical equipment including bulbs conks off despite using high quality voltage stabilizers!! And in case of lightning mere switching off of the power supply is not enough one has to take care to unplug both the power and cable connection as a surge can still come in!! This appears to be a case of heat lightning sending a huge power surge to the unit that caused the implosion!! And equipment manufactures always have a disclaimer which does not entertain any complaints if the same is not used as mentioned in the brochure!!

The above is a unbiased personal opinion and not in support of the manufacturer!!

The big miracle is the elderly couple was saved and that is important!!

Hereafter I will not get irritated by the commercial ads/breaks between the interesting program. These breaks saved two lives.

In between the programme, Subbarao got up and went to another room, while Jalajakshi went to the bathroom.

I am sure there was a commercial break which made them to move away from TV.

What about power fluctuation? I have experienced power fluctuations so often. So you cannot blame only the TV manufacturer. There are other aspects as well.

Faulty and low quality wiring is main cause of short circuit. Generally If the circuit breakers are in place it will avoid accidents. Always use good quality cable with proper gauge for single phase & Three phase respectively. In this case I suspect that adequate stabilizer was not fixed. Thank God for saving the elderly couple.

    Dear Rizwan....
Greetings for the holy month of Ramdaan.
God has saved the couple- Right?Time to rejoice .Right? Now why are you cribbing?
Life has much to it -Rizwan. You are but a kid. Life will teach you.
When you are able to take the Good along with the Bad in equal measure as God's discretion it's then that you have reached a state of realization. From that point onwards nothing matters. You will learn.
May the Grace of Allah be upon you.

Very lucky couple to have gotten saved from disaster!!

This is called an implosion if it is a CRT TV and could have been caused by a sudden surge of electricity caused by a lightning hit to the supply point.

Thank God they are saved. Do we have a system in place for the sufferer to get some compensation like Insurance or are there any ways to help them get to the manufacturer for compensation ? In other words who is going to help this old couple in their struggle ?

The couple has the right to sue the TV manufacturer and also file a case at the consumer court in Mangalore. Hope they still have the purchase invoice of the TV and along with it, some pictures of burned materials due to the TV explosion will help prove the accident. In reading the news, it is most likely the fault of TV unit and brand is responsible to remedy the loss.
