Making the most of charity: Indians fly to Gulf countries for begging!

Daijiworld Media Network

Chennai, Jul 28: It is a known fact that begging rackets are prevalent across India. Though a majority of the beggars may be genuine, there are those who have made it their profession. And now it has come to light that there is a network of beggars who, come Ramadan, catch a flight to Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries to make the best of the season of giving in Muslim countries.

The racket has been prevalent for many years now. Though begging is prohbited in Gulf countries, Indians get lured by the possibility of making lacs of rupees during the month of Ramadan when Muslims generously give 'Zakat' (charity). Some of these 'beggars' even land in jails there.

Indians, Pakistanis and people of several other countries make a beeline to get hold of the charity. The agents rope up a group of people for begging and arrange visa, passports, tickets, and everything else for them. Amusing as it may seem, each 'rich beggar' has to pay a sum of Rs 75,000 to Rs 1.25 lac to the agent to get the arrangements done.

As the value of Gulf currencies is more than the rupee, the Indians make a lucrative business out of begging. Every day, they make around Rs 5,000 to Rs 8,000, and on Fridays the amount doubles. By the end of Ramadan, each 'beggar' is richer by at least Rs 3 lac to Rs 6 lac.

The money that is made is tranferred through Hawala operators. In India, this racket goes on in Bihar, Tamil Nadu and other states.

Already, around 57 Indians have been arrested in Saudi Arabia and 29, including women, in UAE since the day Ramadan began this month. All of them had visit visas. The Gulf countries have taken strict measures to prevent begging, with about 20 police teams being deployed in Dubai alone. Last year, 650 beggars were caught, most of the during the month of Ramadan.

Dear Mr. Sudhakar, Kallianpur / Dubai
Why did you avoid your temporary residence Dubai in your later comments? Why? (I quote yours: Sudhakar, Kallianpur).
See your comments you are unnecessarily arguing.
Your argument should be up to a person who listens.
Once the person ceased to listen then you can argue for ever.
At last you have commented correctly. (Sorry Mr. Gonsalves, Kallianpur is in Udupi, Karnataka, India)
See below your own comments contradictions once again.
Now we are talking about Karnataka, not USA. As per my knowledge Bannur/Puttur is in Karnataka, not in USA. Unquote.
Can I write Bannur, Puttur is in South Kanara district or Dakshina Kannada Thaaluq, Karnataka State, India.

Why belittle our own country, beggars are found in every country and they mostly flock to such places where huge crowds gather in the name of religion and take advantage of human emotions!! A survey reveals that 69 percent of child beggars in Riyadh are Saudis (sourced from google). If children of one of the richest place has such high % in this profession then what is so big about our country or any other poor country!!

All they are beggars? In India, It's our Indian system indirectly reason for this. what action our governments has taken for them? What you personally did for their favor? Ajay,

During BJP rule the situation wasn't different either. Men here argued that the moral police should guard the women in the society.

I am against both. Nor the government nor the moral police are in a position to command to what we women should do - as along as our father (before marriage) and husband knows where we are, what we do, its nobody's business.

At the same time, as girls are raised to live live a life that does not disgrace their family, men too are expected not to bring shame to their family by outraging the respect a woman. If all remember this, there will be no blame game - no matter which government rules !

To encourage tourism Government has allowed some travel company to give visas for tourist from other countries. Some travel companies are charging 15 days tourist visa 300 dhs and for 1 month 450 dhs. etc. So anybody can come as tourist to DUBAI.No local sponsor is required in this case. And from Qatar you can just travel and they will stamp you tourist visa at AIRPORT.

We Indians are very smart people. We see everything as a business. Olden days politics, religion, education etc. were noble things. Now every thing has changed and we made it business. People used to beg when they were helpless and our religious books were teaching us to give donations to needy. But it changed if you go to any religious centre, educational institutions, donation play big roll. The politicians were there to serve the people. Now people has to serve the politician. Politicians will make his money within short period(corruption and cheating). Now Gulf countries studied our tricks. People are coming to Gulf countries to beg( poor people are coming during Ramadan and politicians , religious leaders come any time) ,The Governments d not give any donations or give alms without the notice of Government. They will immediately arrest , jail them and then thy will deport them.
