Mangalore, Jul 29: The residents of Niddodi near here once again rose in protest on Monday July 29, this time when representatives of Congress visited the village to speak to the people.

The Congress members, on the instruction of All Indian Congress Committee (AICC), along with media persons visited Niddodi to furnish a report on the problems and objections of the people to the proposed ultra mega power plant planned in Niddodi, and send it to the AICC.

However, as soon as the locals saw the representatives approaching the village along with media persons, they gheraoed them and stopped them from entering Niddodi.

Around 500 people gathered at the spot and protested against the representatives, armed with footwear and even brooms to chase them away.

"We do not want any representatives to come here and report. Let the leaders or MLA who sent you here come and meet us. We will tell our problems directly to them," the protestors told the Congress group.

The Congress representatives then dialled the number of Rajya Sabha MP Oscar Fernandes, but he was not reachable. When they demanded to speak to the MLA directly, the representatives said that he cannot come as he is in the midst of Assembly session. To this, the protestors replied that if he has no time to come and listen to their grievances, he should resign.

The locals, who have been seething with anger over the proposed project that may take away their lands spreading across three villages, refused to listen to any explanations.

The protestors further demanded, "We had staged a hunger strike yesterday, why didn't you come then? Why have you come today?"

The women protestors warned the group, "This time we have come with only footwear and brooms, but next time anyone comes here, we will bring knives."

The protest soon intensified as the locals began pelting stones at the three vehicles by which the delegation had come. The vehicles were immediately taken away to prevent further damage.

A panchayat member who was passing by in his vehicle with his family was stopped by the protestors and his car was damaged. The police who tried to intervene seemed helpless.

Finally, having no other go but to relent, the Congress members assured the protestors that they would ensure that the project is withdrawn. Only then the protestors calmed down and allowed the representatives to return.

P V Mohan, Denis D'Silva, T K Sudhir, Badruddin, Suresh Shetty and Nelson from Congress and Rohitaksha of Raita Sangha were the representatives.

Police who arrived at the spot tried to calm down the situation, however, they were only a handful of them as compared to the hundreds of protestors.

On Sunday July 28, the people of Niddodi had organized a day-long hunger strike against the project.

Dear jaimini sir,It looks you are enthused by todays protest programme at Niddodi by the locals against the mega thermal power project. But I say that all politicians have turned crooks in this case and locals aree left in lurch. Those visted Niddodi today may be only a test check to know peoples pulse and take the stock of the situation for reporting to higher ups.I see that with todays incident of visiting the place by the politicians which are not connected to the place clearly indicate that suit case culture will be revived here soon to defuse the situation.I have seen the fight aagainst Nandikoor thermal plant and the way how the struggle was scuttled by vested interests and role played by the suit cases.

My dear, have you ever thought, who will supply energy to make HUMAN MACHINE run? Its only through PURE AIR and FOOD. You can't live eating or breathing electricity right? When one can not live without milk for even one day (Yeah, we can see lots of oppositions when price of milk is raised by just 2 Rs), how do you think people can live without food in near future? Already our earth is becoming hot like a furnace, there are no more days left for men to change his mind set. Already mother nature has started to take her revenge.

I really feel sad that our representatives are not so strong to bring any big employement project to our state.

And those who oppose this project please dont beg for 30kg rice from government. ask for employment that can feed you lifelong.

First of all development should not be at the cost of destroying the nature.

Moreover, considering the cost of production, the thermal power plants should be build close to the coal mines and not in the coastal areas. Always transportation of power is cheaper than transportation of coal.

We already have one thermal power plant in Padubidiri and still Mangalore and Udupi are suffering from power cut. What guarentee do we have that the power plant in Niddodi will give us enough power.

Those who need 24 hours uninterrupted power, please invest yourself on solar power generation project at your own house and enjoy the interrupted power, but don't support to kill the nature and fertile agricultural land. Day by Day agricultural land is reducing and if we continue like this one day will come and we need to ear electricity instead of rice. This is a hard fact.

We enjoyed a healthy environment preserved by our ancestors and let us preserve the same for the future generation as well.

At the time of acquiring land for UPCL some people have shown their leadership. After sometime those leaders absconding with heap of money received from UPCL. Some of them have been awarded contract by UPCL. Some people have made cores of rupees due to the incoming of UPCL by grabing poor peoples daily bread and butter. Same thing will heppen in Niddodi also. Why we want only thermal power and why dont we go for wind mills. Many foreign countries have been installed and satisfied with wind mills. Beacuse, wind mills leaders cannot make crores of rupees as they expected.

    Dinesh Poojari,

Agreed Congress men are kicked out in nearby sea but still electricity problem will prevail. Who will solve that problem? BJP. for that too we have to wait for 2014 electoral result.

    The problem is very complex.

This is all a political gimmick by the paid foot soldiers of Sangh Parivar for vote bank.
Instead of finding a solution to the problem they are trying to "Fish in Troubled Waters".

No hunger strike. No protest. No blame game. No inconveniency to farmers.

Request State government to make alternative arrangement to borrow electricity (short fall) from neighboring States. Problem solved.

I am of the opinion that these types of protests will not yield any results, even we saw protests during MRPL project...did it stop?... Did Nandikoor project stop?... If our elected leaders were genuine in their concern, they would have consulted the residents of Niddodi at the inception of this project. Sadly these leaders never turned up until the 11th hour...

Is this protest by the locals or by the opposition???
Because on March 18th 2013 the then Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar has assured that the proposed Niddodi ultra mega thermal power project would be implemented without causing any inconvenience to local residents including farmers.
Then again on July 9th 2013, Fisheries Minister Abhayachandra Jain told reporters here: “I will not allow the setting up of the proposed Niddodi power plant as it harms the life of the people. I will mount pressure on the state and Central governments to withdraw the plan.’’
Then on July 22nd 2013 MP Nalin Kumar Kateel has d that he would not allow the proposed ultra mega thermal power project at Niddodi.
Dear people of Niddodi this is just politics of the two parties and you are bakaras. From now on whenever any minister comes there pledging support, take it in writing and yes keep fighting. Ministers will come and Ministers will go and the same with their assurances as well. So let none of them come there and fool you. Let them give it in writing. Why was Nalin Kumar silent on March 18th 2013 when his own CM gave that statement. Why is he speaking now.
All said and done if the government taking away lands of our farmers, then that will remain a botch on the government. It will be a shame. So dear people of Niddodi although everyone cannot join you physically we voice our support to you through this platform.
Let us fight this without caste creed or party!!!

FYI Govt. had chose nearly five locations in various places and found the other location, due to various reasons, not suitable and zeroed on to Niddodi as the location for this 4000MW project.
It should be understood, Govt. has surveyed other places and not just Niddodi.
Someone here earlier commented that the Govt.'s skin is thick (You know like "KONNA" buffallo, rain sunshine does not affets).
Whether it is BJP Govt. or any other Govt. they know you people will relent and the project will go on.
And about farmers, may be in a span of 10 years there will not be enough farmers left to till the land as their kith and kin are educated and having better income working 5 to 8 hours a day in the comfort of offices and likewise.

What you want MLA to do, Project is already finalised and passed by the government. One MLA opposing it doesn't make any difference as there are many supporting it saying Karnataka is having shortage of power supply and state has to spend thousands of crores to buy the power from other states.

If that is the case why they have to choose a fertile land with full greenery ? DK has already lost its beauty because of all these developments. Government can some barren land or backward areas for this purpose. We already have one thermal power plant (creating lot of problems to public)and a nuclear power plant nearby. Hope any more power generation related plant is not required in our district. I strictly oppose it.

All the power projects will be implemented based on the production cost, the production cost is directly proportional to connectivity of the area where plant will be located. If the production cost very hight then the company has to sell the power at high cost and it will not get any buyers. As far as D.K is considered it is the only district in Karnataka which has International Airport, Large Port and Railway Lines very close to each other with good road connectivity that's why D.K is preferred for most of the Heavy Industries. We may call it our good luck or bad luck.
As far as the people are concerned every human being is selfish only we all need 24 hours uninterrupted power supply, we don't want to miss our favourite daily shows or a cricket match but we don't want any projects near our locality and we want them to shifted to other places, that so called other places also have people staying and they also face the same problems what we may face in future. Every project has its own good effects and bad effects.

Power plants can be built. It need not be this big. And why coal. Don't save money at the cost of ecology. Go for gas based plant - costlier but eco friendly. And give a discount to locals in power tariff.

Why now everyone is crying. When we cried out at UPCL, nobody was hearing. Late Dr. V.S Acharya was district incharge minister, was acting like a agent of UPCL. DC Ponnuraj put section 144 and aquired the land. Same thing will happen. Only the difference is now congress in power and BJP on the opposite side. while UPCL BJP on power and congress on the other side. Fact is both are same as two faces of a coin
