Mugabe hopes to win presidential poll like 1980

Harare, Jul 31 (IANS): Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe Tuesday said his chances of winning the upcoming presidential election are as good as it was in 1980 when the country won its independence from Britain.

The 89-year-old leader said he was confident of gaining overwhelming support from the electorate in the polls that would open Wednesday, Xinhua reported.

Mugabe, who won six elections since 1980, will face again his long-time rival Morgan Tsvangirai, who won more votes in the first round of voting in 2008 elections but lost to Mugabe in the disputed second round. The two men have since been forced into a coalition government.
