Udupi, Jul 31: Area wise, the temple city of Udupi is comparatively one of the smaller cities in Karnataka, but is vastly famous. It is similar to other smaller cities in most respects, especially in terms of congested roads with irregular, improper parking lots.

However, the public is sure about what they want for their comforts. They park their vehicles next to the shop they want to visit, even it is in the middle of the road. At the same time, they have little option left.

Udupi is developing financially and plenty of commercial complexes and huge flats are coming up every day, some of them without following any rules and regulations.

All the buildings constructed in the city limits need CMC’s permission, but in most case, by the time the building is ready, the final product would have varied from the original plan. Most of the basements of such buildings marked for parking are later converted into business establishments.

Road widening is happening in the city accordingly, in places like K M Marg, Kalsanka–Kadiyali road, Court Road, and Jodukatte, but it now seems like the roads are being broadened for parking rather than for the smooth flow of traffic or for pedestrians.

Many of the commercial complexes have their own parking lots but the space is reserved for their staff and not their customers. Then there are some other complexes with 'locked' parking lots, but why are they locked is anybody's guess.

Sadly, the district administration and the CMC, who should be looking into these problems, have done precious little to solve them. Sources revealed that instead, the CMC, over the last few years, has been giving permission to irregular buildings bowing to all sorts of pressure.

Former deputy commissioner of Udupi V Ponnuraj was very strict about road rules. He never hesitated to take action against people who don’t follow the rules. The people of Udupi had the same kind of expectations of current DC Dr M T Reju.

People of Udupi still remember Ponnuraj for many projects, one of which was the Bannaje–Kadiyali road, which has been broadened into a double road.

Ultimately, either the public or the CMC and the district administration should work together for a systematic parking system and roads should be used for movement of vehicles alone, with footpaths for pedestrians.

most land in acres taken by corporates. so they may get generational curse for lying to get such huge sites. note that one acre can cater to nearly 30 families with 3 cents each means 150 people which means 1000 acres means spoiling livilehood of 1,50,000 people. curses multiply as many make money but curses of poor underpriviliged come free. so choice is theirs

    To all concerned,
Buildings should have parking space for each flat. - No excuse.
Create paid parking lots, by way of multi story parking spaces.
Parking meters for all Roadside parking - Govt should make parking lots around city and this will also bring revenue which can be used for development. The fee for first hour should be nominal and increase for additional hours, which will make a turnaround of vehicles and also enables shops to have business.
There should not be any excuse for fines under violations.
When we go out of country we follow these very religiously, why cant we follow in our own country??

Thanks for Daiji to bring this issue.
I am a part time social worker, this Parking issues also a part of my project. I have discussed the same matter with photographs & plans with the related person with Municipality & even DC Mr. K.T. Reju , unfortunately they explained me about big project but no positive action.

Few things I discussed is as follows

a.There is no parking sign board even in front of Municipality office. There is a yellow line on both the side of the road for paid parking but Municipality office side is for 2 wheelers & Opposite side is for 4 wheelers as per them. But how we know & who follows ?

b.Where ever roads are broaden the Auto riksha guys will occupy with a sign board Auto Stand. They won’t allow you to park even though you want to visit the nearer shop. The question is where is the parking place for Private cars? Does it mean only Auto drivers are paying road tax?

c.Manipal is known as Educational city but just in the heart of the city opposite Tiger circle next to Bharat filling station, hill of rubbish are dumped & mostly all Bus, Taxi, Auto drivers daily use this place for urination. Even though there is a Municipality Toilet near Bus stand just opposite side. Its stinks so badly you can’ not walk.
Secondly this drivers are not ashamed even though nearby many females waiting for bus or walking. I have provided a picture of the same & discussed this issue even with DC Mr. K.T. Reju but he says MAHE have a plan to develop this area.

I have suggested my simple plan to him by requesting him to just to instruct the Municipality people to level this area & make extra parking by Tarmacking. So, both the problems will be solved.
But unfortunately it is 18 months still situation is same.
Recently several illegal structures are come up beside the road but no action from our Honourable D.C. or from Udupi Municipality.

Daiji please let me know the location of your office in Udupi, I can provid picture

Hardly you can see the parking place in coming up city,Udupi. If there is no proper accomadation to park the vehicles, then how the city will grow.Better to demolish the buildings if constructed violating the rules effecting the parking place. The local authorities and elected members have to seriously think over this matter and suitable possitive steps need to be taken.Otherwise Udupi will be other Rathabeedi where people can only walk.Thanq.

Some more job creations for SSLC Pass while crying there are no jobs!! Jobs plenty...but employees not available!! Call pretest for a fee of just 500 a day....you get plenty of them! Yes, Udupi is the fast developing city - no doubt. Many shopping centres, huge commercial buildings coming up, but mostly in front of the shops the parking lot is occupied by taxi/auto drivers, as a result no customers can do their shopping coz there is no parking facilities for them. Recently when I questioned this to a shop keeper, his answer was "these taxi/auto personnel have their union and no one can talk to them as they gather like honey-bees"!!! I dont think any authorities got guts to solve this problem.

Within the available space, Udupi Municipality should manage parking pace, by marking area and also they should be strict on builders to allow space for parking near all the buildings.
