Udupi, Jul 31: Renowned journalist Rajdeep Sardesai, editor-in-chief of IBN18 Network that includes CNN-IBN, on Wednesday interacted with the journalism students of School of Communication, Manipal.

In his talk that lasted about one-and-a-half hours, Sardesai spoke on various aspects of media and issues related to journalism in the present day. He also answered a volley of questions from the eager students, who were more than inspired by his talk.

He rubbished the rule that news channels should contain only 12 minutes of advertisements in a one-hour programme.

He also pointed out that some of the channels make sensation out of news instead of making sense out of them, thereby misleading the viewers.

"There is a need to reinvent and rediscover journalism. Journalism has changed over the last 25 years. News is converted into a box office drama. Journalism is not a box office. One cannot write a story based on calculations like whether it would sell or not," he said.

He added that one should strive to restore credibility and morality in journalism. "There is a need for honesty and a certain element of dignity among journalists," he added.

"There is a necessity to create space for good news and at the same time reveal the rot in the society," Sardesai said, adding "A journalist should be a voice to the voiceless.

"Everyday is new day in journalism. Journalists are notoriously cynical. We are in a paradoxical situation where the quality has declined and quantity has increased. It is high time to have proper regulations as the one BBC has and it should come from autonomous regulatory body," he stressed.

He added the major disadvantage is that the story that appears in the media is more of a reporter than of the people concerned.

AMIC Vardesh Hiregange, Manipal University PRO Alex Chandy and others were present.

Good to See Rajdeep Sardesai in our district. His fore-fathers belonged to our North Kanara district who migrated to Mumbai and his father Dilip Sardesai was a great Cricket Player. That is why Rajdeep Sardesai is having some special attachment towards our Coastal districts.

To be on the fair side, every channel has a political leaning. The problem arises when it is blatantly visible on TV or any other type of media. A 'prominent' host on one of the English news channel believes in subverting the panel's views and manipulate them to benefit one particular political party. That too, after inviting them to express their 'own' opinion. Nauseating, to say the least.

Thank you sir for visiting South Kanara.

Mr Rajdeep Turdesai makes some pertinent points, print and electronic media are often guilty of sensationalising news. A more responsible electronic media is necessary for the health of our democracy. Otherwise constant pompous gassing by media personalities will lead to social and colonic unrest

    DEAR JOURNALISTS,
MY COMMENTS WERE NOT ABOUT HIS CURRENT OR PAST POSITIONS...
MY POINT IS THE WAY FUTURE JOURNALISTS CAN BE SENSITIVE IN THEIR ASSIGNMENTS...
YOU ARE THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO ARE ESTATE AMONG COMMON PEOPLE...
    YOU ARE CALLED FOURTH ESTATE...
POITICAL COMPULSIONS, PHYSICAL THREATS AND BRIBERY IS COMMON ON YOUR WAY...
BUT BE STEADFAST IN YOUR RESOLVE...BE COMMITTED TO YOUR TRUTH...BE HONEST WITH WHAT YOU REPORT...
    AND MOST IMPORTANTLY...
    NEVER FEAR DEATH...
FOR DEATH IS AN EXTENSION OF LIFE...
    BRAVE WILL DIE ONLY ONCE...
COWARDS DIE AT EVERY STEP THEY TAKE...

Prakash - i have numerous reasons to agree with you that both of them are surely biased towards one political party and will always put down other parties which does not amount to neutral journalism - rajdeep must pratice what he preaches.

Think I would have communicated with one section of the audience far better (no prizes for guessing though)and definitely not by sitting on the dais....
    Communication starts with relating
and holding hands you see...What ? Not here? No? Then might be a different subject altogether you see....Nowadays even 'communication', 'communicating' etc has a different meaning ...
Not what it was in the good olden days....
