Mangalore, Aug 2: Unidentified men opened fire at the owner of a restaurant on Mannagudda - Ballalbagh road here on Friday August 2 evening.

Vijayendra Bhat, owner of Tom & Chilly restaurant was driving towards in his black Scorpio (KA 14 N 11) Ballalbagh when two men came on a bike and shot at him. The bullet smashed the window pane on the driver's side.

However, the attackers, in a hurry to escape, hit a Hero Honda bike which was a little distance away. They fell from the bike. The two persons who were riding the Hero Honda also fell.

But before they could be caught or identified, the attackers got up and fled with their bike.

Meanwhile, Vijayendra, shaken by the incident, got out of the car and ran out to his restaurant located close by, and hid himself for a while fearing that he may be attacked again.

Sources said that three days back, Vijayendra had received a call from underworld don Vicky Shetty demanding 'hafta', but he chose to ignore it.

The police arrived, and on searching, they found the bullet at the spot where the firing had taken place. Glass pieces were strewn all over the seat and on the car mat.

Ajay Anand and Nagaraj, who were riding the Hero Honda, told daijiworld that while trying to take a left turn, they were hit by the Pulsar bike. "We had not idea that there had been a firing, and thought it was an accident. By the time we got up, the men on the Pulsar had vanished, taking the turn towards Lalbagh. It was only when people started to gather that we realized what had happened," they said.

Sharath, owner of a shop in the vicinity who witnessed the incident said that he tried to chase the attackers but they disappeared before he could even get their bike number. He said he had no idea where they went.

DCP Dharmaiah and other police officials arrived at the spot.

Apart from being a hotelier, Vijayendra is also a businessman and owns Sudheendra Mills located near PVS junction.

Barke police have registered a case. Vijayendra's Scorpio was taken to the police station.

By looking at the face or personality you can not just give your verdict whether a person has links to underworld or no. Mr. Vijendra Bhatt runs his family food business since last 18 years and grown by his hard work. Now hr of need is we need a Commissioner like Mr.Reberio - Mumbai Commissioner who wiped out these kind of pudi rowdies in 1980. Encounter 2-3 rowdies to begin with then automatically they will get message. Or else the time will come that every businessman will carry their own guns to shootout these rowdies.

you cant just brand a man saying he has underworld links just because of his pot belly. the victim is a reputed businessman who runs a mill, a age old supermarket and a good gym in mangalore. they are doing good in their family business.i hear he bought a mercedes with his own hard earned money or his family riches which has attracted all attention of the hafta mongers.so please dont tarnish this mans image just using his imagination.

Looking at the face of Vijayendra, I can't go wrong that this guy seems to be having good fraternity ties with the underworld. Just look at his pot-belly which will give you an inkling of how much wealth he must have amassed and little wonder, the underworld cronies are after his life. The problem with all these big-wigs are they carry out their nefarious activities in order to reach the apex within the shortest possible time. As if it is not enough, they unnecessarily swipe their wide mouth in the front of the public and their legal / illegal assets. Needless to say, they have the backing of our law guardian ... the ministers, the cops etc. who all get their palms greased and assure his well being. In today's hard trying times, money is difficult to come through easily, so they adopt the short cut method ... the results are clearly seen. This is a global phenomenon and such types of stunts will not die down a natural death. These guys are responsible for their own deeds.

The victim is extremely lucky to have gone unscathed with such point blank firing!!!
@Juliet, people should know only 1 out of 10 such incidents go reported as most with fear of their lives budge in and quietly pay the ransom instead of living in constant fear!! All this is the result of huge wealth having gotten concentrated in few hands which the extortionist keep an eye on such people and then target them boldly, it in a way shows lots of wealth is floating around due to real estate and other businesses!!! Best idea to escape from the eyes of these guys is to live austere, and avoid public glare, avoid display of unusual opulence, which does not go unnoticed from these guys eyes!!

These daredevils can go to any extent if their demands are not met with!! These are all the cons and price society has to pay for increasing opulence and unaccounted money floating in the system!! And lastly, the rapidly increasing rich -poor divide and extreme polarization of wealth!!
