Bangalore: BJP, JD(S) strike electoral deal for LS, MLC polls

Bangalore, Aug 7 (PTI): BJP today withdrew its candidates from Mandya and Bangalore Rural Lok Sabha seat where bypolls would be held on August 21 in an apparent understanding with the JD(S), a move that evoked sharp reaction from Congress that launched a frontal attack on H D Deve Gowda-led "family party".

Bangalore South BJP MLA M Krishnappa pulled out from Bangalore Rural, while K S Doreswamy did so in Mandya on the last day of withdrawals, leaving the field to a direct fight between the Congress and JD(S).

In a quid pro quo, JD(S) did not field candidates for August 22 Legislative Council poll from Dharwad, Chitradurga and Mysore Local Authorities constituencies, apparently in favour of the BJP.

JD(S) was coy about the "understanding" and refused to publicly acknowledge that it has entered into electoral alliance with the BJP, which however has admitted that the former had mooted such a proposal.

While the former Prime Minister Deve Gowda insisted earlier this week that there is no truck with the BJP, his son and state unit President H D Kumaraswamy maintained that his party's primary objective is to defeat the Congress.

After getting elected to legislative Assembly in May, Kumarswamy had resigned his Bangalore Rural seat, while his party colleague N Cheluvarayaswamy from Mandya Lok Sabha seat, necessitating the byelections.

JD(S) had won three Lok Sabha seats in Karnataka in the 2009 elections -- Bangalore Rural, Mandya and Hassan, which is represented by Deve Gowda, and sees the byelections as a "prestigious battle" and "question of its survival".

For its part, BJP leaders say in private that the party does not fancy a chance to win in both Mandya and Bangalore Rural and does not want to cut a "sorry figure" if it were to get a poor vote share and terms the move to join hands with the JD(S) as a "political strategy".

JD(S) has fielded Kumarswamy's wife Anita from Bangalore Rural and C S Puttaraju from Mandya, pitting them against D K Suresh, brother of former Minister D K Shivakumar, and cine actor Ramya, respectively.

    Dear readers

Appa Maga party of JD(Secular) is now renamed JD(Rashtriya swayam communal).

Why do we need re election for 8 months?Did Governor rule is not enough? If Anita Kumarswami elected what development is she going to do in 8 Months? Why did she resigned if she could not win MLA seat?

I don't understand why election commision of India give twice chance to one candidate who voluntarily resigned from the post before the five years term?Who will bare the election expenditure?

There should be some law to check this in the future. We don't want unnecessary expenditure. Is someone their to file an RTI and appeal in Supreme court?

We need one more bold judgement like Supreme court baring criminals contesting from jail.

    Jai hind

Deve Gowda's real colours were known in the " Devegowda and Sons nataka mandali enacted drama when BJP and JDS( so claimed secular dala became communal) joined hands to come to power last time . The mistake committed by JDS that it was instrumental in the growth of the communal forces in Karnataka. Let Mr Gowda and Kumarswamy know that voters are not fools to belive this aappa , makkala nataka company. Are there no candidates in JDS other than their own family members ? The Voters have already rejected Anitha in the Assembly Polls. The minorities, OBC(Okkaligas) should understand the opportunistic politics of Gowda family

I don't understand y Kummu is saying "My aim is to defeat Congress". Voters of Karnataka were tired of the drama of JDs and BJP hence given a clear mandate to congress for net five years. Being an opposition leader Kummu should work towards good governance and correct congress whenever they go wrong instead of issuing unncessary statments and playing the blame game.

The bottomline though is that BJP did not want to lose another LS election under Modi! That's all. Actually this has nothing to do with local BJP. It's the BJP at Delhi which might have asked the candidates to withdraw since the election could have been another losing battle for Modi who has time and again been proved to be only a paper tiger outside Gujarat. BJP has hardly won any LS by-election or RS election outside Gujarat from 2010. Tails between the legs is not a new phenomenon to BJP as it has often run away whenever and wherever odds are against them. With all the projection, hype and hysteria surrounding BJP, most of the BJP national leaders know well that MODIfication does not work outside Gujarat and NAMOnia has stuck not the opposition but their own national leadership! Forget about winning, they may not get chance to stand at the podium in these constituencies!

The secular minded politicians and leaders in the JD(S) should resign leave the party since it is now trying for an electoral tie with the communal BJP. But the power hunger politicians are hardly bothered about their community.

Only Congress party can give safety and security to the minorities in the country.
