Exclusively for women: KSRTC bus between Mangalore and Kasargod

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Aug 12: In a move aimed at providing more security to women, Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has introduced special buses between Mangalore and Kasargod exclusively for women.

Beginning Monday August 12, the bus will ply on this route twice a day, starting at 8 am from Kasargod to Mangalore and at 6.05 pm on the return journey.

The bus service will cater to women and girls who travel to Mangalore on a daily basis for work and studies. As it starts at 8 am from Kasargod, they can catch bus and arrive in Mangalore on time. Though colleges and schools call it a day by 4 pm, the time of the return journey has been fixed at 6 pm so as to meet the needs of the working women too.

Keeping in mind the problems faced by women travelling on this route, especially the mental harassment they sometimes undergo when the buses are filled to capacity, KSRTC Mangalore unit DTO Sriram put in efforts to start a service exclusively for women, so that they could commute at ease.

However, just when the service was set to launch, Sriram was transferred to Tumkur. Sources said that he had also tried to get a lady conductor appointed for the bus, but now a male conductor has been put in charge.

"As many as 37 Karnataka government buses ply on Mangalore-Kasargod route on a daily basis. Among these, one bus has been alloted exclusively for women passengers. The bus will ply twice daily, and if the venture proves successful, the frequency of the service will be increased," said KSRTC officials.

It may be mentioned here that some years ago, a city bus only for women had been introduced, flagged off by the then governor Ramadevi. The bus had lady drivers too. However, as the move did not get the expected support from women passengers, the service was stopped.

If sexual harassment is only a reason for separate women bus, then it's not a progressive step instead it makes more isolation from the opposite sex and leads to more aggravation.
Thus ,in coming years their demand will be more( pls . refer KR Prabhu's list) and thereby we are slowly following footsteps of Arabic countries. Then what's the difference between us & them ?

Please remember, The curiosity in men increases when you hide something from them (it applies to women also)

Really good gesture by KSRTC. In some places bank branches, post offices (PM Road) are meant for ladies only. Then why not buses. Let the driver and conductor be ladies also. But the thing is this ladies bus service should not be withdrawn like what KSRTC has done with regard to Aerodome buses.

Flavian, women only bus can prove dangerous to women!!..imagine robbers attacking the bus when moving at isolated area or accident at remote area or something happens to bus drive while driving..can women save themselves??..better to have more seat reserved for women & not allow men to occupy the reserve seat (women, senior citizen,handicapped)..Instead of mute spectator if co-passengers teach lesson to misbehaving passengers, then only the problem will solve..

Some of our readers are claiming that THIS IS GREAT BUS SERVICE SPECIALLY FOR WOMEN & CHILDREN AND FOR THEIR SAFETY. This service is only at starting at 8 am from Kasargod and 6.05 pm on the return journey. What about other timings? Remaining buses are secured for ladies, children or old people or they will not travel in other buses????

Wonder if KSRTC has gone through the cost of running this bus on this route even if it is just one - to and fro trip.
It would have been better if they had taken a survey of no. of women travelling to and fro - firstly to work (definitely know these no. as passengers every day) students going to school\college and others.
Otherwise it is a big loss for KSRTC at the present rate of petrol and it will be scrapped soonest.
Just do not start something which does not last long.

Like in olden days (they used have two rows of seats only for women with separate door) set aside separate seats for women\children\partition that, so no male enters that area.
Then there will be enough passengers for this service and it may last longer.

Instead, each bus capacity should be limited to maximum 10 standing passengers and the number of vehicles (or frequencies) to be increased to facilitate the growing number of commuters.

Instead of carrying and moving, if only pull and get pushed from the millions of tons of dead weight of commuters and goods on wheels (concept change) can save more than 70% of fuel, eliminate pollutions, costs of manufacturing, running and maintenance of vehicles can be below 50% and capacities of existing vehicles can be increased to more than 4 to 5 times, of normal capacity.

Is the surface transport sector ready for a historic change?

You are correct. In Dubai metro/Bus there is separate place or compartment for ladies. If anyone goes to Ladies area in the bus/metro they are penalized. But even it is Islamic country there is no separate Bus/Train for Ladies. One place we are telling all are equal in India and we divide them i.e. SC/ST/Minority, Ladies etc.

Separate bus for women is not the solution. Level up our society to respect women whether single or many. How will it be possible for women to wait only for this bus when they have to be at work at different times? It should be possible for women to move around even during nights without any problem.
