Mangalore: Bihar man 'shines' at duping people with fake gold, caught

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Aug 14: A man from Bihar has been arrested at Belvai, Moodbidri for cheating people by offering to polish their gold ornaments and stealthily pocketing them.

As soon as the fraud came to light, the residents of Marpadi caught him and handed him over to police.

The accused has been identified as Anand. His accomplice Mahesh managed to escape. Both are aged around 25 years.

Anand and Mahesh used to go house to house and steal gold ornaments on the pretext of polishing them. One Tuesday, they went to Marpadi resident Chennappa's house and rubbed a copper vessel with a chemical powder and made it look as good as new. As there were more men in the house, they did not ask for gold and proceeded to another house.

In the next house, there were no men, and only a young woman and her aunt were present. They first took gold toe rings from them and got them to shine. The acccused then offered to do the same with more ornaments. Impressed with their work, the women gave them a gold chain weighing two sovereigns. Anand and Mahesh dipped the gold chain in water, wrapped it in paper and gave it back to the women, asking them to open it after half an hour.

However, the women grew suspicious and opened the packet right away. They found a broken fake chain in place of their gold. When questioned, Anand and Mahesh ran away in different directions.

As soon as the news spread, neighbours Praveen Shetty, Chennappa, Jaya Acharya, Idinabba and others chased the accused. Anand in a bid to escape caught a bus going to Belvai. The locals who came to know this stopped the bus and caught hold of him and handed him over to the police.

The stolen gold chain was recovered from Anand and handed over to the women.

Anand and Mahesh are from Bihar and have been staying in a rented house in Udupi.

Why the women\men fall for these gimmicks from all these polishing people?
    Answer is simple:
    1. Polishing is done in front of their eyes!!!

    2. Cost is less than the gold shop charges for such work

    3. Risk involved in taking\bringing back the gold to\from the shop which is usually in far off places.

    4. Most important of all, is the the goldsmith himself who is a big thief who will definitely steal from that gold given for polishing, replacing it with copper or something like that.

It is not only the women folks falling into this trap, men too fall for it if they are at home - only deterrent is that a man present in the house for these thieves, until they find out how gullible even some of the men folks are!!!.
    All of you take care....

It reminds me one of the old incident.
Once a Sanyasi came to one house knowing that only women are there at home.
He said he will perform a pooja for GOD!
    women agreed,
He asked them to bring some white rice, etc and all Jewllery and Cash at home and put in the cloth in front of him so that after POOJA they will become more 'Wealthy'.
He warped the cloth and performed his pooja, gave them PRASADAM""
Late don't know what happend and how happened, he handed over similar POTLY to them and asked them to keep inside the Gods Room and to open next day.... He vanished from there taking his DAKISHINA.

Later you all know what is the WEALTHY result.
    POTLI is different one.
I don't know when our women will learn a lesson!!!

Any way this Bihari is not as dangerous as that Rajasthani Jeweller from Chattisgarh who master-minded the theft of Moodabidri Basadi and Sold the Jain Idols at Rs.2,400 crores in International market.

All the cheaters and fraud peoples from north, east and west and south Indian are stepping into Mangalore to loot and cheat the Mangaloreans. First of all general public should alert with such types of looters, cheaters and fraud peoples. Police department should make vigilance for all such type of peoples in and around Mangalore and Udupi and police department must start frequent checking to these unknown peoples and take stringent actions against them.

I wont blame Mahesh and Anand, rather blame the women (public)who trust these strangers and hand out their precious metal for polishing.

The duo are smart and make their living by using their mastered skill in deceiving the innocents.

The public should be cautious and stay away from fraudsters like these.

Sometimes I feel what MNS and Shiv Sena doing against Biharis in Maharashtra is correct. It is time we too have similar organization in Karnataka to protect our State getting polluted by people of other States. Those who live in peace, honesty and harmony should not be disturbed, but, those who try to over smart our Kannadigas should be chased from Karnataka. Jai Karnataka and Jai Kannadigas.

    Jossy,

    No problem.

This is because Mangalore is fast developing and very affluent (people) are ther in M'lore.

It is easy to digest as follows:-

"where there is honey there are bees"

If you are Mangalorian, please defend your home town please.

There is no confirmation whether police have booked the Case against them and kept one culprit in their custody or not. When Police will catch the second culprit ? He may immediately run away to Bihar and then it will be difficult to catch him, because the police will not show the same sincerity in catching him which they showed in high profile Moodabidri Basadi theft case.

In Bihar 2 types of people are produced - First category of super 30 intelligent class who go in for IIT but still has left bihar under developed for so many years that has seen migration to other states for better fruits, 2nd category is of those labour class who have no work in bihar but migrate to other states for work and con people. Today mangalore is seeing a lot of change in the population and I enjoy inclusive growth but when we come across these kind of conmen immediate presence of mind is required which the above ladies showed it. People especially women in absence of men should never allow strangers into their house for any work or help. Precaution is better than cure.

They could catch the frauduster because there exists good and alert neighbourliness unlike in other cities. In Bengaluru even a murder of the neighbour is known only after reading news paper.

Rightly said Aloknath.Once Bangalore (in 70s and 80s)a friendly city now turned a 'mathlabi city' of first order. This is the result of so called development.Everybody is concerned about self and self only. Our Mangalore/Udupi is far better in this respect as good quality still prevails in the soceity, the land of 'Parashurama Shristi'
Todays Bangaloreans have no heart,no concern for the sufferings of others and even for Rs 1 and 2 they prefer to bargain and argue with vegetable vendors and other petty road side vendors forgetting the ill effect of rising BP.However they are prepared to pay for the Physician....who is also a looter.
