Mangalore, Aug 14: Police are supposed to protect citizens and prevent crime, but what can one say when a policema himself turns thief?

In an incident that occured late on Tuesday August 13 night at Darandabagilu Pilar in Thokkottu, a policeman of Asaigoli reserve police force was arrested for allegedly attempting to steal valuables from an advocate's house.

The arrested policeman is Varun (35), hailing from Madikeri.

At around 11.30 pm on Tuesday, the family members of advocate Anand Gatti were praying in the house, when they heard some sound coming from the first floor of the house. Growing suspicious, Anand came out of the house and looked towards the coconut tree that reached the first floor. By then, Varun realized that he had been discovered, and in a bid to escape, he ran down the staircase of the house and came out through the front door, even as the astonished family members stood watching. He managed to escape through a nearby plantation.

The family members began screaming for help, and immediately the neighbours assembled at the spot. They began hunting for Varun but could not find him anywhere.

Sometime later, a red Activa with Madikeri registration number was spotted near Darandabagilu temple. Suspecting that it belonged to the thief, the locals hid themselves behind bushes and kept a watch.

After a long wait of one-and-a-half hours, Varun finally emerged and was caught immediately. However, he again managed to give them a slip. The locals chased him till he tired of running, and finally succeeded in catching hold of him.

Varun did not give any clear answer to the questions posed by the locals. Ullal police who arrived at the spot arrested Varun. It was then revealed that Varun himself was a policeman.

Ullal police have registered a case.

KNOWN THIEF IS BETTER THAN UNKNOWN ANGEL...
Varun's case must be dealt with sympathetically...
Also it is a material for introspect and overhaul in training, placement and compensation strategies...
We must make our forces strong within and outside...
Then they will no more need to steel...

More than coconut plucking, it is Arecanut plucking which has more scope. Because now the Supari pluckers charge as much as Rs.1,300/- for just 4 hours work per day in addition to afternoon sumptuous meal. So, monthly income of Arecanut plucker today is Rs.40,000/-. Reserve police get only Rs.12,000/- per month and no Mamoolu for these KSRP constables. (KSRP = Karnataka State Reserve Police which is different from Civil police).

He is from Reserve-Police and not from corrupt Civil-Police. Reserve Police are always well Trained. Their Training is very tough and equal to Army Training, because they are always sent to trouble torn, disturbed areas to restore law & order and most of the time they come back severely injured due to stone pelting by hooligans. Unfortunately this constable got injured because of his own crime.
