Udupi: Raghupati Bhat slams plan to convert Brahmavar sugar factory into university

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SM)

Udupi, Aug 16: Former BJP MLA Raghupati Bhat on Friday August 16 expressed strong opposition to Congress government's plan to set up a horticulture university in place of the defunct Brahmavar sugar factory. On the occasion of Independence Day on Thursday August 15, district incharge minister Vinay Kumar Sorake had made an announcement to this effect.

Addressing a press meet here, Bhat said that the BJP is opposed to the proposed project as the land around the Brahmavar sugar factory belongs to the farmers and not to the government. "Before taking any decision the government should call a meeting with farmers and take their opinions into consideration," he added.

"Reopening the Brahmavar sugar factory was previous BJP government's dream, and also the wish of the late Dr V S Acharya. The place where the factory is located is ideal for sugarcane farming and there were nearly 5,000 farmers incorporated in the cooperative society under which the sugar factory was running. The BJP tried its best to protect the factory and resume its operation, but it did not succeed," he said.

Explaining why the BJP government had failed to resurrect the factory, he said, "In the year 2009 BJP government called for a global tender and Ramy Sugars placed a high bid with the hope that it would run the factory successfully. The company paid a deposit of Rs 1.5 crore to the government, but because of lack of experience, the sugar industry failed. Sometime later, another company from Hyderabad came forward, but Ramy filed a case against the government as it had already paid deposit, hence the government could not go forward with the Hyderabad-based company.

"At the time of the Assembly elections this time, Congress state chief Parameshwar had said that within a month Rs 60 crore would be released to clear all debts and reopen the factory. We have given them three months already, and we were willing to wait for a year if they had intended to go ahead with the factory. However, now district incharge minister has announced that a new project will come in its place, which is not right. Out of the promised Rs 60 crore, let the government release at least Rs 15 crore and pay off Ramy's Rs 1.5 crore debt and use the remaining amount to pay farmers and labourers. Once this is done, there will not be any liabilities," he said.

"Once the debts are cleared, a new global tender should be called and the factory should be used again for sugar production only. Whoever purchases the factory must set up sugar factory, along with any other industry if they wish to," he added.

Speaking on the proposed horticulture university, he said BJP welcomes the idea, but it should not be set up in Brahmavar industrial area. "In 2012, all preparations were done to start an agricultural college in Kolalgiri on 350 acres of land. The horticulture university should be set up in the same area, as Kolalgiri is a central point for Udupi, Kundapur and Byndoor.

I don't know why we need to have reservation to convert the Brahmavar Sugar factory which is limping to a better Horticulture University which trains many of our people in advanced hoticulture lines. Our coastal area is well suited for horticulture and many of the good nurseries we already havew around. This is a good proposal and hope the govrnment succeeds. All the best.Thanq.

First of all, in 2009 BJP called for tender and awarded same to Ryan Sugars as they were the highest bidder. Is it enough to bid high and win or the then Govt. had to see if that bidder had proper experience\expertise to start the Factory?
Ryan S. Paid the deposit and then Govt. could not do anything once they found out Ryan had no expertise to run this Brahmavar factory!!! What kind of tender they issued? Did not they look into the expertise\experience part of the bidder? Here itself it stinks.
This was all game played by BJP and they have most probably pocketed lots of money to award tender to inexperienced Ryan Sugars (That is what T. Bhat said above.)
I think, there are hardly any big sugar cane growers in the vicinity and the cost of bringing the sugar cane from far off places and manufacturing sugar will be uneconomical and arduous as trucks etc. have already plenty of local business in construction works.

When 5 years on BJP had not done anything except contract that useless party, they slept on it and now demanding from present govt. an answer on their promise!!!!
    Vare- Wah, Vare-Wah.

Now in a short time he will come up with another agitation as he is very much affected on Govt.'s restrictions on sand mining...

You have no right to say Vinay Kumar sorake a cheater..? Do you know the importance of horticulture university in our region? are all the machineries of that factory in good condition to restart the production...? if the production cost is uneconomical who will come forward to reopen the factory...? Please do not comment on your prejudice.

Varahi project initial aim is to give water for sugar cane crop in udupi district. Thousands of crores money spent in varahi project. The project is nearly in completion. Now he want close sugar factory and thinking about horticulture university. Like this minister should be kicked off from our district.

Brahmavar sugar factory was built by occupying dense forest area called Baikady forest and some agricultural land in mid seventies. This forest was like natural cooler for the residents of Brahmavar those days.Initially sugar production went on well eventhough there was shortage of local cultivated sugar cane.Hundreds of loorries to transport the cane for Shimoga district.Hence production cost was high.Eventually due to lack of proper feed factory experienced heavy losses.Present situation is entire plant and machinery got rusted.Building and structures have deterioted.Entire scenario looks like world war memorial. There is agriicultural research centre in Brahmavar.I think need of the hour is to built public hospital in Brahmavar like one we have in Ajjarkad Udupi.Brahmavar is flurishing with some land mark educational institutions.Population level gradually increasing.Being a taluk there is shortage of healthcare for common man.Hope our elected leaders will do their best to utilize this prime location in a better way.

Dirty politics. Our parties are taking opposition parties means just oppose whatever your opponent do it. Whether it is good for the people or not. i.e. If onion price increases they will not suggest how to control it but they just oppose it by depositing onion in Banks safe deposit locker or they will put onion garland and march in the city. Shame on you all the politicians. If the petrol price is increased they just block all the roads, but they will see how much people are suffering for their action.
