Kundapur, Aug 27: In a very tragic and unfortunate incidence, a 40-year-old man chasing a stray dog, met watery grave after falling into a well at Naikwadi near Gujjadi here on Monday August 26.

The deceased has been identified as Paulo Carvalho, son of the late Peter Carvalho and Basti Carvalho of Naikwadi.

Paulo was a daily wager. On Monday morning, as usual he went in pursuit of work. However, he returned home since no one employed him for the day. It was around 10.30 am that he noticed a stray dog enter into their courtyard. He immediately started chasing dog which ran behind their house where a deep drinking water well is situated.  Paulo too ran behind it giving a chase without realising that dog was running close to the well. Before he could realise, he lost control and fell into the well which is more than 30-feet deep.

Though his family members and locals came running to the spot, Paulo had already drowned by then. His body was later fished out of the deep well by the fire brigade personnel.

Paulo who was bachelor has left behind mother, four sisters and two brothers.

Gangolli police have registered a case in this regard.

Why owner let the well un-walled? Must be protected with the barrier around it. Dangerous for children and as well as elders. Safety first! don't wait until someone fall to die and then construct a wall around it. Owner is guilty of murder.

RIP Paulo!! Very tragic accident and seems like it was destined to happen from the sequence of events however, sounds strange that having been well versed with the topography of his compound this should not have happened!!

Seeing the condition of the house, the family appears to be below the poverty line, very unfortunate that a earning member is gone!!

    Lavina Pinto,
boundary wall of well costs very less than a digging well (1% of the well cost) ask any body.
It is peoples habit of taking risk in their life.
Door latch is costing less than door right still many houses in Mangalore Udupi no habit of putting latch and lock later blame the robbers and police.
Leaving bafellos without rope ? is rope is costlier than bafello?

Governement should make it mandatory that all open well should have 4 feet hight boundary wall surrounding it.
That is the only solution can be saved many lives per year because we read many storys that people falling in a open well or abandon well etc.

All useless comments...building a fence around the well will prevent further tragedies. Local org, church org can come to together to pool resources.

Mr. Bhandarkar, Paulo must have been furious at the dog and was determined to catch that dog and that is why he must have started chasing that dog.
That Dog has unknowingly tricked paulo and poor paulo fell into the well(Dog laid a death trap to Paulo). It is really sad. May his soul Rest In Peace. Gangoli police have registered a case in this regard. So what are the police going to do, Are the Police going to arrest the dog and produce the dog to the court. What kind of case will be argued and Will the dog be prosecuted.
