Mangalore, Aug 27: Janmashtami also known as 'Krishnastami' is the birthday of Lord Krishna, the eight avatar (incarnation) of Lord Vishnu. It is a very important Hindu festival celebrated in India with éclat and great enthusiasm.

With just one day to go for Janmashtami, preparations are in full swing in temples across the city. People were seen rushing to the markets to buy necessary items like flowers, vegetables and others in preparation to the feast. However the prices of commodities have also increased during this festive season.

For people of coastal Karnataka, Krishna Janmashtami is not a mere festival of the birth of Lord Krishna, but a festival to share joy with lots of fun and entertainment.

Janmashtami especially for Mangaloreans, is incomplete without ‘Mosaru Kudike’ which is similar to 'Dahi Handi' in Maharashtra. This celebration replicates Krishna’s love for milk and butter. Every street in the city will be geared to celebrate this event in a more ritualistic and entertaining manner.

People spend the day  by spreading Shri Krishna’s glory, reciting and singing in temples. Temples of Lord Krishna are decorated with grandeur.

The major attraction of this feast are the children who dress up in the attire of Lord Krishna and his spiritual beloved Radha.

Vijay who works at a National bank speaking to Daijiworld said "on this day, we celebrate with our families with the women folk setting up beautiful Rangoli designs, decorating Krishna’s idol, visiting temples, cooking different vegetable delicacies. In the night, we cousins get together and spend the holiday."

Krishna Consciousness movement located at the coconut garden road, Kadri will celebrate Krishna Janmastami at the DR T M A Pai Convention center on Wednesday August 28.

The celebration will begin at 6 pm and will conclude at 12 pm. The programme comprises of various Puja, artis, abhisheka, oravachana, bhajan, others and will end at 12 midnight with Maha Mangal Arti.

Oh, how dearly I miss my childhood and those mouth watering Ashtami Moode & Chakkuli that our Brahmin neighbors were presenting to us early morning with sweet coconut milk. Their heart was as sweet as that Coconut milk. Most of them are gone to eternal rest, yet, I can recall their love filled voice "Dhethonu Maga...Thinla Baaley". Can we see those good olden days of unity, harmony and trust among neighbors of different religions again ? Yes, if we all join together and reject the evil designs of Politicians. Wish all Hindu brothers and sisters a very happy Krishna Janmashtami from the bottom of my heart. Jai Karnataka, Jai Hind.
