Mangalore: Committee expresses concern over saffronization of textbooks

Mangalore, Sep 1: The committee against saffronization of textbooks in Karnataka on Saturday August 31 claimed that some 'objectionable' content has been found in social science textbooks of class 6 and 9.

Addressing the media at Hotel Woodlands, committee president Suresh Bhat Bakrabail said saffronization attempts have been made in the social science textbook of class 6 (1st and 2nd semester) and class 9 history textbook published in the current academic year (2013-14).

“It is not apt for Congress to continue the textbooks formed by the committee during the BJP rule. Even after a plea was made to the education minister, there was no positive response. Now, as the textbooks have already reached the students, order should be given to teachers not to teach wrong things to students and a new textbook committee should be formed,” he said.

“Chief minister Siddaramaiah speaks against saffronization but he was not serious about saffronization in textbooks. It is strange that Congress is least bothered even though they knew that BJP was engaged in saffronization of textbooks,” he added.

“The textbook committee did not follow the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2005 guidelines. The social science textbooks consist of pre-planned lessons, hence it will not help students. In most of the lessons, importance is given to Hindu history and rituals and they do not have lessons on women, backward classes and other necessary issues. In class 6 textbook, under fundamental rights, there are not many details about religious freedom, culture, educational rights and others; which means the textbook targets minority people. Overall, it looks like creators of the textbooks have tried to highlight the negative aspects of Christianity and Islam,” said Bakrabail.

“The issue of Catholic Church and its problem with Protestants is described in two pages. In class 9 social science textbook, there is lesson on Swami Vivekananda is mentioned but not about Dr Ambedkar, Dr S Radhakrishna, Jawaharlal Nehru and other prominent people,” he said.

Committee treasurer Nigel Pereira, Alwyn Colaco, Ramashesha Shetty, Walter Maben among others were present.

DR.SHANKARNARAYAN, BEFORE YOU COULD BLINDLY COMMENT THE GENUINE STATEMENT OF MR.SALEEL ASKING HIM TO CHECK HOW EDUCATED HE IS, YOU SHOULD HAVE CHECKED YOURS HOW BADLY YOUR DEFENSE MECHANISM WORKS EXPLAINING THE SAFRON COLOR AS THE SYMBOL OF SACRIFICE. WHILE FOR BOTH CHRISTIANITY AND ISLAM COMMUNITIES IT SPEAKS ALOUD AS A COLOUR OF TERRORISM ATTACKING THE PLACES OF WORSHIP OF CHRISTIANS AND MUSLIMS... FACTS CAN'T BE FICTIONS AND FICTIONS CAN'T TURN OUT TO BE FACTS... WE HAVE BETTER EXAMPLES OF THESE KIND TO EXPLAIN THE MAJORIY WORKING UNDER THE BANNERS OR FLAGS OF SAFRONIZED COLOURS... DID YOU GET IT DOCTOR...???!!!:)

Its good news. Students are getting some new things sometimes may be the topic which not held in history will get to learn in their text books whenever State government changes. Its better American or British rule us again so that our next generation can learn International history, rather learning this old castism and religion based.

Ignorance of the self is the source of all trouble and knowledge of it is undecaying bliss and peace. The problem of majority in India is that they see minorities as aliens because they refuse to learn about the minorities in detail where as for minorities majority is not aliens because they are taught about the majority religion and culture in schools. The majority should learn in detail about the minorities thus understand that there is no difference between majority and minority as far as moral and ethics are concerned. In safronisation there is an effort by saffron ideology to twist the history and teach flawed knowledge to younger generation.

    Dear Dinesh,
Studying Bhagavdgeetha, Rama, Krishna is definitetly not saffronization.
But here there is few questions which will raise doubt about saffronisation of education.
    1. I have studied little of of Hinduism. Islam in my school days and only good about the religion is taught But in my school days, other religion was not condemned but teaching were taught about all religion. Here other religion has been targeted and condemned, which is not in the right direction.
    2. Why the book has to talk about the division of Catholic Vs Protestants, Shia Vs sunni. Why not, it is not mentioned about caste system prevailing in Hindu religion.
    c. Why VEDAS, the origin book of Hinduism is not taught? It has in depth knowledge of spirituality. Is the the Hindu priests are scared about their interest and position, if they teach VEDAS to the children and Hindus.

Unfortunately, what suits the leaders and protects their interests, that only they teach to the followers of religion, whether it is Hinduism, Christianity, Islam or any other religion. Real Truth, nobody want to teach because money & power counts more than the real truth. This is my own observation.

When BJP tells FORCEFUL CONVERSION is wrong and here they are trying the same wrong thing.Only title is changed, there it was "conversion" and here it is "History and Culture".Dear students try to read Bhagavad Gita, Bible and Koran and decide which is good for you and helps you to do good for others. There is only one religion, the religion of Love.....

'Satyameva Jayate'and 'Yogakshema vahamyaham' are Sanskrit words and have nothing to do with Hindu culture. Sanskrit was spoken in ancient India. Most of the Indian languages are derived from Sanskrit. You are mixing religion with language.

Dear Dr.Shankaranarayan, Mangalore/Abu dhabi - your definition of saffronization is true in principle but good only for the books. The reality is totally different. BJP has always been mixing religion with politics for their selfish ends. It is the forceful enforcement of hindutva on non hindus. In the broad sense it should mean Indian culture but for the BJP it means religion. They have always proved to be anti minority and communal. Do you remember Kageri and Dhananjaya Kumar were seriously planning to introduce Bhagavadgita in schools? Also Mr. Kumar had openly d Christians and Mulsims as outsiders in an interview in NDTV with Barkha Dutt.

The bottom line is we are a secular democracy. We need peace and harmony between people of all religions living together. We don't want communal unrest every now an then. I am sad to say that people like Advani, Modi, Togadia, Varun Gandhi and a few others cannot tolerate all religions living in peace and harmony. Our focus should be on development of the country and its people. Religion is a very private affair. People should be free to practice what they want. It is not the job of the govt.

Nehru family has been projected out of proportion, like Chacha Nehru, etc. Nehru deeds & photos can be seen on Net, which explains his story. He was a laughing stock infact in case of Edwina Mountbattern. Story of Sarder Patel, Lal Bahdur Shastry are given less importance. Vivekananda represented India in World Religious Conference. During Vijayanagar rule gold & diamonds were sold on streets. In Kumbamela Crores join together over centuries & China traveller Heuan Tsang has mentioned this.

But unfortunately Matters like this are never seen by these buddhijeevis.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY SAFFRONIZATION?
SAFFRON COLOUR MEANS SACRIFICE. IT DOESN'T INDICATE ANY RELIGION OR PARTY. WHEN SOMEBODY WEARS SAFFRON DRESS IT MEANS THE PERSON HAS SACRIFICED THE WORLDLY PLEASURE. SAFFRON COLOUR IN TRICOLOUR INDIAN FLAG INDICATES SACRIFICE DONE BY INDIANS TO ACHIEVE INDEPENDANCE. SO PLEASE DONT MISUSE THE WORD

When people never bother about poem written by former Al-Qaida Member published in Kerala College Text Book, saffronization is nothing….. . When we learn more about Hindu Religion in India they call it saffronization. If Hindus are not allowed to learn more about Hindu Religion then where we have to go … Saudi? Yesterday even RBI was talking about taking over Gold & Jewellery from Hindu Temples so that it can improve the Indian Economy due to falling currency rate against US Dollars. Wealth from Hindu Temples OK for Indian Economy but study about Hindu religion is crime? Let them takeover all the Gold and Jewellery from all the Indian Hindu Temples but before that Indian Government should that “India is a Hindu Rashtra” and we pledge to give equal treatment to other religions too with quota system

Havent we studied in history books about our CHACHA Nehru as a Hero who was infact a laughing stock for Mountbatten family? On the lessons on Dr. B R Ambedkar we learnt more about his aversion towards Hinduism than his greatness. we never heard about Rajguru, Savarkar, Abdul Gafoor Khan in our text books! Heroes were made Zeroes and zeroes were made Heroes in text books formed under Congi instructions.

The saffron brigade is desperate! I don't think the greatness of a person increases/decreases because what our text books say. Internationally, the data is available and people rely more on that.

Why the BJP government stooped to such low levels? Do they think that children will develop on their given theory and change history?

If they truely are committed to education, set some initiatives to prepare researchers, scientists, thinkers and leaders, don't distort history in classroom education.
