Mangalore, Sep 1: The valedictory ceremony of ‘Yuva Spandan’, a workshop for young writers aimed at honing their literary skills, organized by ICYM, Mangalore diocese was held at ICYM office, Olivet House in Jeppu on Sunday September 1.

Central Sahitya Akademi Award winning poet Melvyn Rodrigues was the chief guest of the programme.

Convener Vitori Karkal, ICYM director Fr Ronald D’Souza, president Sheldon Crasta, vice-president Joshua shared the dais.

Melvyn Rodrigues lauding participants of the workshop said, "The basic training received during this workshop will be useful in some part of your life.

"The problem with us is we do not know what we want to be in life. It is a must to know this. Hence our goal or mission should be decided at an early staege and we must stick to it," he said.

Quoting the words of author Stephen Covey, Melvyn Rodrigues asked the youth to concentrate on qualities like being proactive, having a plan in mind, prioritizing tasks, understanding first, and so on, through which one can achieve success.

"Most of the people are not successful because they lack practice. To be a writer, one has to read 100 times more than the content one writes, and most importantly, he or she should be a good person. The youth should keep ethics in mind in every work they undertake," he advised.

Fr Ronald D’Souza said, ‘Our Konkani language and literature is in the hands of young writers who have to preserve it and take it to the next generation. The training received through this workshop should be given to others," he said, and asked the young writers to keep in touch with senior writers as it will help in their growth.

Melvyn Rodrigues distributed certificates to the participants of the workshop on the occasion.

Sheldon Crasta, president of ICYM Mangalore diocese delivered the vote of thanks.
