Bantwal, Sep 2: An unsuccessful attempt by thieves to loot a cooperative bank in Kolnad here came to light on Monday September 2.

The thieves who entered the bank through the window, looked for gold and tried to open the locker with a gas cutter and escaped after being unsuccessful in their attempt.

Gas cylinders, cutter, torch lights and other tools were found inside the bank. Vittal police, Bantwal circle inspector, finger print experts and dog squad arrived at the spot.  Investigation is in progress.

The Vittal Padnoor Agricultural Cooperative Bank branch situated at Kudtamugeru in Kolnad has gold ornaments worth over Rs two crore in its lockers, besides cash amounting to more than Rs two lac, according to the bank staff.  As the theft attempt failed, the cash and valuables remained intact.

Insufficient security

The customers have expressed anguish at the bank for failing to provide necessary security.  The bank neither has a CCTV nor a siren.  There is no watchman either.  The robbers might have known the poor level of security, it is said.

The staff who closed the bank on Saturday evening and came to work at 9.30 am on Monday September 2 came to know of the attempt to loot only after their arrival. It is suspected that the attempt took place either on Saturday or Sunday. When the news spread, anxious customers assembled at the bank. They heaved sighs of relief only after checking that the valuables were intact.

Bantwal circle inspector Anil S Kulkarni, Vittal inspector Madhavakudlu and staff inspected the place.  A case has been registered in the Vittal police station.

How can be Banks so careless with somebody else property. They get paid for it.without proper security, cameras.Nowadays theft is like going to drink coffee with gas cylinders at night .cameras are not always a best method because when no electricity everything in vain.Anight guard is better.and avoid backdoor Windows.

Better to keep more gold and cash in H.O. or in a branch which is situated in a city area having cctv and strong security at night (without sleeping) so from this no body can dare to bring gas cutter or modern instrument to stole. Further these culprits also trying in village area but our police team is sleeping and telling that if any body knows prior to theft inform police , this is our police team, they can harass poor and innocent persons but they have no guts to catch a thief of gas cutter means they are the partners of thieves.

The Godrej Safe was not one of the best quality of safe. It was average category to keep low amount of cash. The banks usually go for higher quality of Godrej safes which are both fire resistant and burglar resistant. Anyway, the thieves could not get through even the average quality safe, speaks volumes of quality products of Godrej.

Because of the security lapse in Banks such kind of thefts and robberies happen. Nowadays Thefts and robberies are increasing day by day. Police should detect such cases immediately.

Every LPG cylinder and Gas cutter cylinders have unique serial numbers inscribed on them by the Company. Both cylinders seem to be new ones.
    So Suppliers can be identified.
Hence forth suppliers of Gas cutters should register all their individual Sales including to genuine users, with local Police and such gas cutter purchaser's full identity proof should be obtained from the buyers by the suppliers and kept on their records. This will help during such decoity incidents.

The Safe manufacturers can now use all the above photos for Promotion of the " Gas-Cutter-Proof " Products of their company.

Police can now impose ban on Transport of Gas Cutters without Police permission. Now a days all such thefts are taking place by cutting Windows & door grills with Gas cutters. Even Moodbidri Jain Mandir theft also took place in similar manner.
