Bangalore church attack case: Police make first arrest

Bangalore, Sep 5 (DHNS): Almost four years after a church was attacked in Huskur Gate, Electronics City, Bangalore police have announced the first arrest in the case. The suspect, Sajjan Kumar alias Babu, 33, is also said to be involved in a similar attack on a church in Yedavanahalli near Attibele in 2008.

Kumar, a native of Madagondapalli in Denkanikottai taluk in Krishnagiri district of Tamil Nadu, is believed to have attacked two churches in Tamil Nadu as well.

A senior officer who led the investigation said the suspect was associated with a Hindu fundamentalist group active in Tamil Nadu. He, however, refused to disclose the group’s identity.

The officer claimed Kumar had “confessed” to all the four attacks. He was personally opposed to “religious conversion” by Christian missionaries and hence attacked the churches “in protest”, the officer quoted him as saying.

The special branch of the City police, which made the arrest, believes Kumar alone could not have carried out the attacks. He certainly has come associates and an organised group that aided and abetted him in the crime. This angle was being looked into in the investigation, the officer added.

The special branch was looking into whether the attacks were organised and a larger conspiracy was at play. A special team led by DCP (Crime-2), V S D’Souza, will investigate the case.

Kumar’s arrest came after the special branch tracked him continuously for four months, although the case has been officially assigned to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) official. Not a single arrest, however, had been made until Kumar was apprehended.

The officer said the suspect gave himself away in a drunken stupor at a bar in the City recently. He spoke his heart out to a friend. The special branch then received the tip-off and arrested him.

The first attack was carried out on St Antony’s Church at Yedavanahalli on October 13, 2008. The miscreants entered the premises and desecrated the statue of Jesus Christ. The doors and windowpanes were also damaged and copies of the Bible and curtains were set afire.

In 2009, the Infant Jesus Church at Huskur Gate in Hebbagodi police limits was attacked.

The attackers damaged the security guard room and desecrated the statue of Jesus Christ besides damaging the windowpanes and setting fire to a van belonging to the church’s parish priest. Kumar is said to have confessed to involvement in the two attacks.

He also reportedly confessed to carrying out attacks in two churches in Tamil Nadu.

During the same period, miscreants had set afire a scooter parked near Oasis Hotel where a Christian prayer was held.

Some miscreants had set fire to a tempo traveller parked in a church at Handvadi check post. Cases were registered at Mathigiri police station in Krishnagiri district.

Dear,Sachidanand Shetty, Mundkur/Dubai, can you explain the word conversion here. There were attacks in Mangalore but did you find any conversions. If you call the act of running a school and hospital for poor is a tool for conversion then we have a problem here.
Every community is looking for a Christian run school and you call the school activity is a conversion place?
The previous state government forcibly changed the school books and introduced Hindu fundamental ideologies in the syllabus and what you call it then?

    Mr.Shetty,
If someone has the STRONG FAITH in thier religion nobody can convert them. As per some other commentors here if anyone converted forcibly why don't the converted person complaints to the people. Instead of attacking other religion why don't you make strong faith awareness in your religion. One can born in thier parents religion and it is not necessary he/she should die in same religion. It is his/her fundamental right. Am I right ?

I don't know why some people are against so called conversion. In fact forcible conversion is not at all there in INDIA. Very meager amount of conversion may be there that is with their wish and will within the power of constitution. If conversion is going on rapidly, the percentage of Christians should have been increased. But the percentage of Christians is mere 2 in India. It was 2% during our independence. So how there could be conversion.

Hindu spiritual personalities like Maata Amritanandamayi,Sree Sai Baba,Sri Ravishankar Guruji,Murari Bapu etc., are above religious considerations.Maata Amritanandamayi's most of the funds ar from Christian countries/deciples so Sai Baba and Ravishanker Guriji.Naturally they have large chunk of followers from that community. They never ever spoke against any religions and anybody thinking about it also unfortunate.Stooping to the level of pulling their names shows the mean mindset of such so called literates. For the spiritual persons I mentioned herein, their reference towards 'mankind' and not any religions.I have good friends from christian community persons, even priests wherein I have seen their love and effection is towards mankind and not to the religion and many people from their own community does not like this.
Work done by Sri Sai baba and Maata Amritanandamayi are found not possible even to the state governments where they have their service to the people.

Mr. Jeevan/Mr. Rakesh, do you believe forced conversion rumour of illiterate fundamentalists and selfish politicians ? If so, why are they fail to prove it ? For them, running an orphanage, serving a patient, helping a downtrodden is conversion ? How many of these fundamentalists are helping the poor of their own community ? Today, many helpless people of their community are suffering due to their conversion propaganda. Many Christians are hesitant to help these poor and helpless in fear of attack with conversion accusation. Why can't we leave the religion aside and be human first ? Pls. take some time and visit hospitals and witness the selfless service of nuns. They never ask the patient of their religion, but, treat them as humans. Desecrating or destroying worship places of other religion will only damage the image of great Hindu religion which is based on Ahimsa and tolerance. Jai Hind.

If you want to re-check it, approach any church and pretend like you want to covert. No church will agree to convert you immediately, unless you undergo basic teachings and fundamental principles of Christianity which will take months and years together. If anything good is done by the government then it is vote bank politics or election motive behind it. If anything wrong happens even if government is not involved government is blamed. There are some people who will blame government even if a dry leaf fall from tree. I can't understand why these so called culture protectors don't know to respect other's religion and culture. It is fundamental right of every Indian citizen that they can believe, follow and propagate their religious beliefs. Only god knows when these people will understand the meaning of respect.

'Conversion' and 'Love Jihad' are the tools used by some comunal groupes to supress the minorities in India. Even in the Holy Bible also it has been foretold about our prosecution when the end is nearing which we can see now in countries like Pakistan, Egypt etc. As long as majority of the people in my country are secular, we should not really bother much about these 'drunken' groupes.

Malasia,Turkey also becoming more & more dangerous for minorities..In INDIA & Western countries it is very quite opposite, day by day minorities economically & politically getting stronger..that is the beauty of secularism & multiculturism..Religious fundamentalism a global fenomenon(recently in Burma,Srilanka,Maldives) INDIA can not be immune from this, considering the History, culture & nature of Indians it will have negligible impact on over all society..

I am sure if conversion issues stops immediately we don’t see any reason why these people attacks Christian Religious Places. But so called our secular minded scholars will never stop promoting conversion whereas they never lose an opportunity to blame for the aftermath of conversion.
