Bangalore: Jail-break serial rapist Jaishankar arrested

Runaway rapist Jaishankar walks into Bangalore police trap

Updated

Bangalore, Sep 6 (IANS):
Convicted serial rapist and killer M. Jaishankar alias Shankar Friday walked into a trap laid by the Bangalore police through an informant, six days after his audacious escape from the central jail here, a police official said.

"The hardcore criminal fell into our trap after the informant lured him to come out of his hideout and walk to a spot on the pretext that a vehicle was waiting to take him to Tamil Nadu as he wished," Bangalore Police Commissioner Raghavendra Auradkar told reporters here.

Police suspected all along that the psychopath would not have gone afar undetected, as he had severely injured his hands and legs while scaling the prison's 30-feet outer wall and jumping from a height to escape in darkness despite heavy rain Sunday.

"We had a hunch from day one that Shankar would have been cooling his heels somewhere in the outskirts and bidding time to recover and get away unnoticed. We learnt through our informant that he was desperate to board a lorry or any old vehicle going to Tamil Nadu from where he hails," Auradkar said.

As a manhunt was launched to trace Shankar with Rs.5 lakh reward for credible information leading to his capture, the informant tipped off police that the fugitive was in a hideout at Kudlugate near Bommanahalli, 25 km from the city centre and 3km from the Parapanna Agrahara jail in the southern suburb, where he was lodged since May 2011.

"Using the informant as a decoy, we sent two men in an old vehicle to the spot around 12.30 p.m. and Shankar came and boarded it thinking he would be taken to Tamil Nadu via Hosur which is across the Karnataka border. But the vehicle was turned towards city and he was formally arrested by one of the four teams we had set up to trace him," Auradkar said.

Admitting that Shankar's escape was sensational and exposed the chinks in the security set-up, Auradkar said the convict would be produced before a local court Saturday for police custody to interrogate him and crack the case.

"As Shankar is a hardened criminal, he is not opening up. On asking where he first went from the jail and how he managed to hide so long, he said he went to a temple, some school in a nearby village and that he shifted places during late nights," Auradkar said.

This was the second time Shankar escaped from a jail as he did from a Salem jail in Tamil Nadu in March 2011 and once from police custody at Coimbatore in the neighbouring state where he was facing trials for series of rapes, murders and dacoities.

Eleven central prison officials, including an assistant superintendent, two jailors, two head wardens and security guards were suspended for dereliction of duty leading to Shankar's escape.

A truck driver by occupation once, Shankar was involved in 26 criminal cases over a decade in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

Hunt for criminal Jaishankar: False alerts leave police baffled

Bangalore/Mysore, Sep 6 (DHNS): The Bangalore police, who are spending sleepless nights worrying about the fugitive serial killer rapist M Jaishankar, have been flummoxed by the numerous but contradictory alerts about the man.

In Mysore, the owner of a wine store at Maharaja Complex opposite KSRTC suburban bus stand alerted the police that a man “closely resembling Jaishankar” visited his tavern on Thursday. Police Commissioner, Mysore M A Saleem, said the man in question was not Jaishankar.

Jaishankar, who is facing trial in several murders and rapes, escaped from Central Prison at Parappana Agrahara in Bangalore on Sunday.

Although workers at the store claimed to have served Jaishanker around 11.38 am, the CCTV footage told an altogether different story. When Jaishankar’s photograph and the footage were shown to them, they backtracked on their version of the incident. Still, the police did not take any chances and issued an alert for Jaishankar in Mysore and the surrounding areas, Saleem who visited the place told Deccan Herald.

A senior officer in Bangalore police, who is supervising the efforts to trace Jaishanker, said a “well-deliberated and systematic” approach was being put in place to catch the fugitive.

Senior officers said they were baffled by reports that the man was sighted at different places and at the same time. The special team to track him down has received little clue so far.

On Wednesday, police went on a wild-goose chase after receiving an alert that a man “looking too similar” to Jaishanker was spotted sleeping on a footpath close to Byrasandra Cross near Bidadi in Ramanagara district. Local police said residents claimed the man disappeared in the morning.

There were also rumours that the same man had asked for a lift from a lorry driver who obliged him but fled later. This alert also turned out to be false.

Kamal Pant, the Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), Bangalore who is monitoring the efforts to trace Jaishankar, confirmed that alerts had been received about Jaishankar from places as far as Vellore in Tamil Nadu, Sakleshpur in Hassan district, Byrasandra Cross near Bidadi, Mysore, Chikmagalur.

As a lookout notice had been issued for him and thousands of posters were printed and sent to various places across Bangalore, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, multiple alerts were expected. He further said that no alert could be ignored, although many turned out to be false.

Pant stressed that every alert had been “meticulously” verified before being ruled out. In all such places, the local police were taken into confidence and the vigil was heightened.

No point in residents of India jumping for joy this is only one rapist, there are soooo many more rapists, thieves and other kinds of criminals on the run. The Indian System needs to change if India is to be called a safe place again. India being the no.1 country in the world for rape cases, India has a long way to go.

The photo published earlier in newspapers and other medias were quite different. Now after nabbing him it is quite different with thick moustaches. Then how can the public identify him to give any clue. Another thing is that news was published that he is found in Mysore. Why the police have failed to search the vicinity of he Jail area to detect him? These are all glaring mistakes as far as the police is concerned.Dont allow such incidents recur in future.

BP Commissioner and other bigshots in the picture seem to be elated with flashing photographs of Shankar on his recapture.
They should show themselves as relieved on getting him back and look sheepish for this lapse in a CENTRAL PRISON!!

It all seems to me a staged drama for big bucks.
God alone knows who the informer is and the speed in which the 5 lacs were announced for any information...
How a person can use a steel\iron pole to scale 20' wall, walk on a 15' wall (how he climbed that 15' wall anybodys guess and he has to be an acrobat for both those feats) and then another taller wall 30' by using bed sheet\belt (times of India report 7th sept.) Was a 15' long iron pole kept ready for him on that spot? Now they say he may have scaled the gate!!! wow GATE without sentries in a Central Jail!!!
One more intriguing mention in the TI news - every half hour check by sentries where he was locked in hospital prison cell and in that half hour he opened the cell with duplicate key, went down (no sentry in the corridor!) and out in the open garden - as if he was strolling in the middle of the night in a PRISON - and when did they notice he was not in the cell? Immediately after the half an hour!!!
So all these sensational keep happening in Prisons!!!

He was arrested quickly because policemen themselves were responsible for his escape and now to salvage their image, the cops nabbed him. Now the cops, who allowed him to escape, will get Rs 5 lakh reward. Easy way to make money. Now the policemen and their first, second and extra wives can have a jolly good time. It is only the gullible people and taxpayers who are taken for a ride.

Earlier pic was much different and in today's Times of India he looks Older\plumpier.

A sizeable latest picture of him, facing and sideways, published in the media etc. may help people recognize him better and inform police immediately.
As he is very dangerous, he should be traced\caught immediately

This great Escape would not have been possible without the connivance of jail officials. Police along with the support of public arrested this criminal few years ago and this guy is out due to utter carelessness of jail people. Till the killer is arrested put the jail officials behind the bars. This would send a strong signal for everyone.
