Mangalore, Sep 7: The three-day inter-collegiate cultural festival organized by Mangalore University at the Mangalagangothri campus came to a grand end on Friday September 6, with Alva’s College of Moodbidri bagging the overall championship trophy.
There were over 1,500 participants from 77 colleges. SDM College, Ujire, took home the second overall place.
In his presidential address, vice-chancellor Prof T C Shivashankara Murthy said, “Apart from studies, sometimes it is also necessary to do something that makes you happy - like taking part in cultural events. This was the sole reason behind organizing such a huge cultural fest at the university level,” he said adding, “There is an element of ‘art’ in each individual. It is the duty of the university to recognize such talent.”
Air Marshal K C Cariappa was the chief guest at the valedictory programme. He said to the students, “You are an important segment of the country. The ball is in your court. You have to make the best use of this period,” he added.
Programme co-ordinator A M Khan welcomed and student’s welfare officer Prof P L Dharma proposed the vote of thanks.
As many as 25 different events were held in six different venues on the campus. On Tuesday September 3, competitions such as light vocal solo, folk orchestra, classical instrumental, group song, mimicry, ‘rangoli’, cartooning, and collage took place.
Folk dance, classical dance, quiz, skit, debate (Kannada and English), western vocal, group song (Western), clay modeling, poster making, on-the-spot painting, and spot photography competitions were held on Thursday September 5 and classical vocal (solo) and mime competitions on Friday September 6.
There were five major categories of events such as music, dance, theatre, literary events, and fine arts. The best group in each event was awarded, in addition to overall championship for the highest scoring college.
The selected 40 members will get an opportunity to represent Mangalore University in the inter-university cultural festival to be held in Kottayam, Kerala, from September 18 – 22.
