Mangalore: Feast of Nativity celebrated with devotion and zeal

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Sep 8: Thousands of faithful on Sunday September 8 flocked to Catholic churches across the twin districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi to celebrate the Feast of Nativity of Our Lady or ’Monthi Fest’.

Scores of children and adults showered flowers on the statue of Mother Mary to mark the celebrations, which began early morning. There were hymns and prayers at the grotto of Mother Mary, and a procession accompanied by a musical band, with children showering flowers.

Apart from thanking Mother Mary for her numerous blessings, the devotees also express their gratitude for the kindness of mother nature and mother earth for the bounteous crops.

Processions are held in churches wherein people carry baskets of flowers and ears of paddy in their hands. The procession, normally by taking the statue of Baby Mary along, starts from the church, passes through decorated streets, and reaches the church premises again. The newly harvested rice stalks and sugarcanes, duly blessed by the priests, are then taken home by the people. The grains are crushed at home, added to milk, and served to the family members.

After the Feast Mass, people returned home with the blessed new paddy, which will be placed at a decorated altar and later mixed with sweet dishes and eaten with a thanksgiving to the Lord.

Ramanath Rai visit

State forest minister B Ramanath Rai visited Rosario Cathedral and conveyed his wishes on the occasion of Monthi Fest.

He was rendered a grand welcome by the church authorities. Bishop Aloysius Paul D’Souza handed over a bouquet and the new grain to the minister and blessed him.

In his message, Ramanath Rai conveyed his best wishes to the gathering and wished them peace and happiness. "Let all lives bloom in peace and joy, just as the new grain that blooms out in glory," he added.

Local corporator Latheef was also present.

During my childhood days monthi fest meant Flowers, Kobu and a sumptuous meal of 7 to 8 veg dishes and vorn. Collection of flowers was an adventure like. On way back from school sneaking into unguarded gardens and stealing flowers unaware of the fact that mama Mary may not like stolen flowers. Getting a big Rose as the
centerpiece of the flowers plate gave immense joy. Nowadays children are given a 100 rupee note and asked to buy flowers from flower shops and boutiques. After the flower showering ceremony we would wait to pick up good flowers especially roses for the next day use now no one cares for the next day. Next day will see to itself. Flower plates were mostly of iron or steel but now wicker baskets or disposable paper plates. Those days the final destination was a KOBU, tasty or not no matter but it should be a long one. Carrying it home after the ceremony proudly like having won a Bharata Ratna. Now children would prefer to have a readymade drink of chilled juice of kobu for their teeth are not as strong as to bite it. Lunch menu was of 7 or 8 veg dishes now 2 to 3 veg dishes with one dish of non veg. Changing times and changing fashions of festivals. Let mother mary bless all those who participate in the festival with a religious and festive spirit.

Olden days we used to run everywhere to collect the flowers and there was condition if we bring all the days flowers than only we are allowed to take one sugar cane on festival day. I feel the pain what we did during our schooldays but now a days the children are lucky, some voluntary units supply flowers, sweets, cakes and some even food. We were waiting for the festival so that we can have plenty of food i.e. vegetables may be 10 to 15 items. Our parents used to start buying necessary items i.e. vegetable, rice, jiggery etc. well in advance. But now I have seen most of them will order from catering co. But at present most of the children are fond of junk food i.e. burgers, chicken fry and they are very far from vegetable……This is modern world?????

As said, love thy neighbours, if your neighbour running out of money scarcity, then being christian and being beloved son of Christian faith, i hope sharing is the best gift ever you can give to any one, so instead of giving comment better you share what you have to your neighbour's first. Wish a very very happy feast of Nativity

Isn't it a sight! The kids are really a joy to watch.'Novem' I do remember.Happy 'Feast Of Nativity'
    everybody..............
Get very nostalgic for I used to enjoy 'Monthi Fest' the best from the sidelines and for obvious reasons. I used to love seeing the 'bigger female kids'.
Very beautiful they were during my days. Some of them may be near Nannies now, considering they married or were rather whisked away
    early by worthy suitors.
Now for the puritans...I used to pray first O.K. before doing all this and even later....God used to listen to my prayers always and sometimes I used to get my wish...
Pray Pray n Pray and you succeed
is therefore an adage which I have coined on my own......

    Good day to Daiji readers,
I am well conversant in many languages: Konkani, Tulu, Kannada, Hindi, Marathi, Bhojpuri, Russian, French, Spanish, Croatian, Portuguese etc etc.
This is because I was born in Mangalore out of a Portuguese father and an Indian mother and later I joined the Armed forces and Then in the Merchant Navy etc.etc.
In Portuguse, you ask someone whom you meet "Commo esta?" He will reply "Ista Buon" Let us ask in Konkani " Cosso Asai?". The reply will be "boro asam" Can you see the similarity?
In Russian/croatian/Bulgarian and Balkan languages, for water they call "Uda". Surprisingly in Konkani we say "Udak!"
It is very simple to learn languages if you converse with them.
In all languages in world, the name for mother starts with 'M'
But in only one language it is different! In Marathi they call her as "Ai"!
Have a nice day all of you!

Thank You Daiji for the nice coverage. It's really nice to see those small children collecting flowers. It recalled my old memories. We used to get half day leave on the previous day to the feast to collect flowers. I along with my other three friends have walked miles in collecting flowers. In my parish we use to have local sports conducted by CYM in the afternoon and the prize was sugercane. What nice days they were!!! Thanks Daiji in recalling them. Thanks for the wishes from the bishop. Wish all Happy Monthi festh. Mother Mary bless us all. Long live Monthi festh.
