Kundapur: Man attempts to rape minor girl, locals threaten protest

Silvester D’Souza
Daijiworld Media Network – Kundapur

Kundapur, Sep 10: A man who allegedly attempted to rape a minor girl is said to have gone absconding. The incident was reported from Hadlagadde at Toodalli.

The victim, a 13-year-old belonging to schedule tribe, is studying in class 8. When the girl was alone at home, Arun Narayan Poojary (26), resident of Toodalli, reportedly entered the house asking for a glass of water. He then asked the girl to prepare tea for him and when the girl was in kitchen, he attempted to rape her, states the complaint.

When she cried for help, the girl was beaten up by the man. When he was about to close the door, the girl managed to escape, said her mother.

The accused Arun Narayan Poojary is the son of a former president of the development committee in the school where the girl is studying. Locals said there are several cases lodged against Arun in the village.

The attempt to rape incident came to light after 10 days and when the case was registered. Arun was reportedly saved by a few people who claimed that he was absconding. A few political leaders are also trying to close the case, it is learnt.

Locals say that in Byndoor and Kundapur villages, many girls drop out from school after class 8, as their parents fear for their safety.

In this regard, D R Keshava Koteshwar, CEO of Spoorthi association has demanded strict action by the police in this case in order to build confidence among villagers.

"Whenever rape cases are reported in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and other places, people protest over here. But we keep quiet when such an incident takes place here. Hence all youth associations should raise voice against this evil," he said.

He said the accused should be arrested in the next 2 days, failing which a massive protest will be organized in Byndoor and Bhatkal.

A case has been registered in Bhatkal police station.

Ifthi How marrying a SC or ST girl is a punishment for Billava boy? Kindly explain buddy. Do you mean to say that if the SC, ST people are not supposed get into the mainstream? Does it mean that if they marry a boy from other caste, it is as good as punishment for the boy? After all what 'upper caste' is this Arun when his acts are so 'low'? Whatever the other side of story, if the girl is 13, he is at wrong, even if the girl had infatuation to him. Being major the onus was on him not to encourage her and not even enter her house if she was alone. If there was other side to the story, why is he absconding? Water, tea are not the subjects here. So don't question why water, why tea, why not whisky or why not beer? That's not the issue here. Even if there was 'relationship' between the two, then Arun is to be blamed for having mislead a 13-year-old girl. Let's not justify these acts under any pretext. If what Arun has done, whether consensual or forced, is 'ILLEGAL' as per our country's laws, then he must be punished. Don't bring morals, ideologies, religion, caste, colour, buts, ifs, hows and whys such things. Nothing exccept Law must be applied and anything that is considered wrong as per the Law should be punished. That's all.

@ Gladson and R.Bhandarkar We have heard one side story only. Did we hear Arun's version? After giving him water why then she agreed to prepare tea for him? (He may be her friend). As she belongs to schedule tribe marrying her would be a punishment for Arun Narayan Poojary. Waiting five years means to let the girl reach the age of 18. This was my thinking and opinion - better not to explode it in the air please.

That is why he could not be charged for earlier offences.
Now on this complaint he should be taken to task and meted out apt punishment to deter other such young people fom committing crimes especially teasing\molesting fairsex.

Rape and consensual sex - have a very fragile demarcation between the two. If one party doesnt have mental approval, then it should be termed as rape. Rape is a fascinating subject for academic study. It can never be eradicated bcz there can be varying degree of forceful coercions into ones freedom and choice. Every married couple experience physical n mental trauma if one of the party doesnt agree for sex for various reasons. Root cause for rape could be many and might go very deep into social structures such as family, communities, social norms, nature of job, stress, etc. I come across many situations where a smart, famous guy is liked by pretty girls, but a studious, not-so-smart guy finds hard to woo a girl !! There are ample opportunities for interaction these days like college, public functions, public travel, family functions, internet-mobile space etc. where people come to meet new people. This interaction itself is fascinating to explore. If we follow a simple rule - dont hurt, dont harm - then the dynamics of relationships could be positive in nature. No one has time these days bcz of our work, and other commitments. We dont have time to speak to people in family. The gift of Choice is sometimes hurting to people who have some kind of expectations from partner.

Aaseye dukkakkey moola. But we can never escape from clutches of life. How we live and what way we live - is still a open question. There is no single standard procedure for getting what we want !!

Ohh my lOrd !! Kundapur has such sick people too ? This 26 year old chap must have married a girl to fulfill his desires !! His dad is a big man, he has political contacts in Kundapur.

arun n. pOOjary could have easily got a nice butterfly as his wife. Why he is doin such shameless act of raping a 13 year old innnocent girl who was preparin tea for arun pOOjary ? She is so innocent that she allowed him to enter house n even prepared tea for him. But this nasty fellow was filled with lust. He is a pervert, mind is sick, eyes see minor girl in criminal frame.

Where is so called great MLA of srinivas shetty doing ? Is he still busy drinkin tea near a shop and chit-chatting with locals ? Rapists are living in his constituency. Address the problem srinivasa shetty ? Why should girls stop education after 8th class in your area? WHat kind of society is this ? Just because guys try to rape a girl, girls are advised not to go to school after 8th std? What kind of Justice is this ? Feel like blasting the authorities there. Are they still living in Taliban kind of state ? It is duty of srinivas shetty to make sure girls study without any fear and guys should be educated to respect girls. When u were two time MLA with BJP, wht were u doing all these years?

    Gabriel,

Your observation is right - the girl is indeed innocent that she went inside to prepare tea for him.

Generally, a certain class of our society does not even enter the courtyard of SC castes but whenever they do the occupants of the houses get so overwhelmed that they welcome them wholeheartedly. How I wish the victim had a clue of this monster !

Would he have accepted a girl from this community as his bride ? Never - but tormenting her for just a minute's pleasure is all acceptable - hypocrite !

    Lydia mam,

The mental barriers existed between castes n creed are slowly disappearing with influence of right kind of education. All humans are have common characteristics of existence and one such characteristic is basic instincts. They exist once life exists on earth whether we like it or not. Society has found some mechanisms to harness this energy, one institution is marriage ( monogamous ?). For basic instincts, there is no caste, creed or age factor - arun pOO jaary is one among thousands of example. Our minds are trained to think in a certain way bcz of outside inputs such as books, media, films, people around, nature/animals etc. Those get obsessed with perversion or those go through loneliness might target innocent gullible girls for satisfying their senses. It is absolutely wrong to coerce into other persons liberty without knowing the person well. Now it is time for Arun to enjoy his life inside jail with our ( tax payers) money ? Well, there are anomalies in some solutions offered for criminals.

Is rape a virus that it is so contagious that the number of cases heard is increasing every day. Atleast I thought, in dakshina kannada & udupi, people are civilized and cultured. But after seeing manipal case and following cases, it is a shame on the people and disgrace to the society that we don't respect innocent girls. let us have stringent law to protect our girls, whose numbers as such is declining anyways. Time to initiate a stringent law and practise is it for the benefit of the society. Where is end for Rape????

The reality is that we have become vultures. Bury our head and say we are living in the safest environment. As long as the victim is my neighbour's daughter, the crime is not existing.

Disgusting ! Wake up people !? Eloping is a girl's fault - being raped is at-least not fault ? Wish for sons is alright but please.. please teach the sons that moral is their duty too as it is of girl's !

"A few political leaders are also trying to close the case"
This is the story in almost every case. Because of political leaders backing, so many culprits are getting inspiration to carry out crime again and again also it is hindering the process of action against criminal cases. So, every time this type of political pressure found in any case, media should disclose the name of polician (irrespective of political party), so that politicians too have some fear. Also voters should know, what their representatives are actually doing.

One teenage girl from Jat community eve teased by one Muslim youth, brothers of this girl beat him to death and local public retaliate violently by killing her two brothers which lead to death of more than 30 people in the riots.
