Mangalore: Woman alleges bus conductor of harassing her

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Sep 14: A young woman has lodged a complaint against a KSRTC conductor for mentally harassing and humiliating her during her journey from Mangalore to Bangalore recently.

In her complaint, Rashmi stated that she had booked a ticket for Rs 600 from Mangalore to Bangalore through KSRTC online booking portal.

On September 10, she boarded the bus (KA 3008 as mentioned in the complaint copy) alone, carrying with her a copy of the e-ticket, and copies of her driver's licence, pan card, passport and her original photo id of the company where she works. As per the complaint, the conductor accepted her e-ticket, but refused the photocopies of her other documents and asked her to produce their originals as identity proof.

"He stopped the bus in the middle of a forest ahead of B C Road at around 11.30 pm and screamed at me to get down from the bus right away or pay him Rs 600. He was yelling and shouting at me in front of all the passengers and degraded me in public. He got the driver to stop the bus three times and asked me to get down on the way," Rashmi stated in her complaint.

Rashmi refused to pay him the money as she had already paid while booking the ticket online.

"My mother also called the conductor as well as the TC requesting them to let me travel but was treated in a very ill manner," the complaint stated.

To calm down the situation, a fellow passenger paid the conductor Rs 600 after which she was allowed to travel, Rashmi said.

Rashmi demanded strict action against the conductor so that other travellers are not humiliated in a similar way.

    hi Rashmi,
It definitely is very wrong how the conductor behaved with you. Such people must be handed over to the police immediately for their ill behavior. Its not like we travel in their buses for free.
I had an experience with a conductor today who humiliated me very badly in public just because i didn't have 2 rupees change.
These people dont have any right to humiliate us like this. And strict action must be taken against them.

Dear Sister Rashmi, You have not done anything wrong. The ID proof which you produced to the KSRTC conductor was valid according to KSRTC terms & conditions for E-Ticket.

It states under point 6/7: Original/Photo copy of Driving Licence, Voter ID Card, PAN Card, Passport, Ration Card (with passenger photo), Senior citizen ID card (issued by KSRTC/Govt.), ID card(with Photo) issued by Govt. Departments.
Original private company ID card (with Photo), Educational Institution ID card (with Photo), credit/debit cards (with photo).

Since you produced the valid documents to conductor, his behaviour towards you was absolutely wrong and must have consequences. No woman should tolerate such insulting behaviour and mentally harassment. It was his duty to check the validity of the documents before the bus departed. This is a usual procedure. He has no right to ask you to leave the bus at midnight in a Forest area.

I wonder no fellow passenger have not intervened in this matter and stopped the conductor harassing and demanding you to leave the bus? Does Indians have no courage to help a woman? Is it not the duty of every Indian men to protect a woman against such harassment? This is the most worst part of Indians!! They have big mouth to bark but do not offer any help in need.(except one passenger!!) Most of the Indian bus drivers and conductors are not educated and not well trained for their job. They don´t know how to behave with the passengers and specially with a Woman. Politeness and respectful handling seems to be unknown to these creatures. Let us wait and see whether the KSRTC takes any action against the conductor?

It happens sometimes depending on the Conductors attitude. Once I was travelling in night bus from Mangalore to Ooty with my family, came all the way from Manipal to board the Bus from Bejai main KSRTC depot, unfortunately I forgotten to bring the Tickets.
Even though the Conductor having a Passenger list with him & I shown my Pan Card & Wife’s Voter Card to check our name, he refused to board us. It is clearly written my name in his list of Passenger booked in Manipal & Boarding at Mangalore. He said without ticket you can’t travel.
I approached the Supervisor there in the depot but he also refused. He said you buy a new ticket then cancel the old one but we will deduct the penalty. I about to buy a fresh ticket by that time, the Driver & a co-staff had come there & succeeded to convince the Supervisor & Conductor. Finaly I managed to travel.

Even in the best of places black sheep exist and if the contention is true, then the the conductor needs to be penalized for going overboard and harassing a bonafide passenger, and she deserves full support in her fight for justice so that it sends a strong message to other such unscrupulous employees!! Hi All,

I am surprised reading certain comments on this page. It is because of people like S.O. Lobo who commented on this page that India as a country, as a society is backward. A person who can read news online can also spend 30 seconds to open KSRTC site and check the rules. Here is the link if people still dont find it: http://www.ksrtc.in/site/e-bookinge-cancellation . Please go thru points 6 and 7 under the terms and conditions which clearly says Photocopy of ID is valid as well as Original Company ID. I had both of these proofs with me. Then what gives this conductor so much courage to demean me in public?
Is it Harassment or A money making Gimmick or a case of lack of awareness? In any case this has to stop. This could be a regular thing but not many girls are brave enough to raise a complaint against such people and of course people like the ones who wrote some comments that clearly shows lack of awareness encourage such people and put down the ones who speak for themselves.
I want to thank people here who have encouraged me and yes I will not stop fighting against this till I have been given Justice.
I also want to mention that KSRTC Management in Bangalore supported me a lot when I gave a written complaint. I have hopes in them that will take strict Disciplinary Action against this.

Thank you sister that you come up with courage to defend yourself. This happens to many of our sis/mothers who get humilated by these types of rude persons. Sister dont bother about negative comments in this portal, as here all comments are based on your religion or political party you belong to. Humanitarian ground is absent here. Sister you need not reply to any X Y or Z in this forum.
Sorry that you were in such a situation on that night, but its a part of life. So cool.
I thank that person whoever paid ticket money.

it is wrong to say that driver /conductor should have checked the ticket before the departure.in trains or on buses the T T. or conductor comes to check each ticket after departure.
if according the trip chart all passengers are seated in their seats then there is no problem.the conductor/driver has other work such as handling luggage reporting to the counter.the bus has to start in right time.if a passenger boards the bus at the time of of departure the driver cant stop the bus to check the ticket

You are very right and that is what I subtly expressed in my earlier post that no KSRTC Volvo conductor (who haver a professional approach)in his senses would ever 'dare' to do such a thing to a educated lady especially in the times where women are on cloud nine with a multitude of atrocities reported against them from all around our country and public sympathy at the zenith irrespective of whether the allegations are true or not!!

Both the parties should be given due chance to put forward the exact course of events before a final decision is arrived at, not just because the complainant is female it should be taken as the whole truth and the probably innocent person penalized!!

Again this is a personal opinion based on experience with KSRTC long distance Volvo staff, and this could be a genuine one off incident!!

I HAVE TRAVELLED BY KSRTC VOLVO MANY TIMES BETWEEN MUM-MANG-MUM. I FOUND THE STAFF WELL BEHAVED AND COOPERATIVE. KSRTC VOLVO BUSES ARE BETTER THAN PRIVATE VOLVO BUSES. CONDUCTOR IS RIGHT IN ASKING FOR ORIGINAL ID FOR E-TKT. THE ONLY FAULT I FIND IS THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE AT STARTING POINT BEFORE BOARDING THE BUS.

Trying to twist the law and rule is in our (Indians) blood. When KSRTC or Railway rules strictly says we should travel with original ID proof if we booked e-tickets, and i don't understand why people are travelling with photocopies. If she would have travelled with any one original ID this trauma can be averted. She is having copies of all IDs not original.

I am surprised at this report. In my experience the Drivers / Conductors of the KSRTC Volvo buses are well trained and disciplined. This must be a rare case, I have my own doubts about this incident and even if it is true the girl could have handled it in a better manner by paying up and preferring a complaint later. The fact that the other passengers did not bat for her but paid up just not to delay the bus sets a doubt in our minds.

One has to produce the original I d in case of e-ticket . I believe if the lady was polite and had requested the conductor ,things would have been ok. The conductor has to follow the rules. If there was a flying squad, then he would have been in trouble. So he demanded the original I d.
One cannot just trust what the lady says .she might have been arrogant. What had actually happened only the co passenger can tell. There are some ladies who think law and public sympathy is with them and they can do anything. They try to blame men, accuse them of abusing manhandling molesting and trying to rape. They create such problems. It is good to analyse before making a comment. There so many innocent husbands and in-laws behind bars on false harassment and dowry cases.i am not against women. but i believe that rule should same for men and women

This due diligence process should have been done before allotting the seating in the bus.

Conductor does not have the right to stop the bus in the middle of night asking a passenger to "get out" of the bus. He should have prudently reported to the sub-depot or alighted the passenger in a proper bus depot rather than this rude behavior.

Perhaps the conductor was thinking it is his father's bus.

Whatever...this sh*t piece of a conductor should be thrown in the valley at the wee hours of night to learn his lessons!

I have travelled many times recently on KSRTC Volvo Mum-Man-Mum but found the staff to be professionals and very cooperative and orderly and the service is above average!! I doubt a KSRTC conductor in his right senses would ever dare demand 600 without a valid reason and that too from a female in the middle of the night!!

Secondly, whether it is male/female nobody can flout rules in these days of terrorist threats!!

The complainant should have kept her cool and given the conductor the money for which he would have issued a valid ticket and then sorted the matter out at the end of journey and got a refund!!

I personally feel in the times of rape/molesting/abusing fever running high and such news occupying center stage in our country there could be some unscrupulous people who will try to take advantage of the situation by blowing simple issues out of proportion and bring trouble to innocent people!!

However, the above is a personal unbiased opinion based on frequent experience of travelling in KSRTC Volvo LD busses and this one could be a genuine one off incident!! Jai Hind!!

Just enlighten me on the following.

    1. Is there a forest before BC Road from Mangalore?

    2. Does it not mentioned in the e-ticket that original ID proof is required to travel? Is she illiterate?

    3. She says she refused to pay but had no problem when a fellow passenger paid. Is that the way a person of good intention do things?

I know there will many disagreements. But if we don't want to follow regulations or will support flouting of law, is that a good precedent.

Our youth has a chance to rewrite our destiny. But when most of the beneficiary of the corrupt money are our youth, (Our politicians and bureaucrats involve in corruption to benefit their children) do you expect a change to happen? Have you met any youth refusing these benefits because it was earned illegally?

Reality is that most of us reacted this way because the complainant is a female. If this is the way we project gender equality, we have miles to go.

Whether the Dept. has not provided proper training to the concerned Conductor. If the Women version are true strict action should be enitiated by the KSRTC Authorities,it is the lack of knowledge by the concerned Conductor. Same thing happened to me one when i was travelling from bangalore to Hyderabad. I had booked the ticket outside through online KSRTC agents and got the ticket, When I went to bus stand, Driver and conductor was standing in front of bus, I gave the ticket to conductor , he said that he has to mark (sign) the ticket with the pen and pen is inside the bus, he told me to stay outside the bus and wait for him. I was waiting for him outside the bus, Even 5 min pass, he did not come outside. Then I went inside in search of him, I found him and asked for my ticket. To my shock, he said that he has given me the ticket, I said him that you have not given my ticket. Then the argument broke between me v/s conductor and driver. Finally the TC arrived and he forcefully asked me to pay the ticket once again. I have to pay once again as this was the last bus to hyd and next day was the important meeting with my client. I request everybody to be cautious while travelling in KSRTC. Not all drivers are same but still be careful as it happened to this lady.

    Few questions to be considered...
    - Is ID proof required in bus journey. I never heard, but I may be wrong.
    - At the time of boarding Mangalore to Bangalore bus the verification of the tickets are done. Once the passenger board the bus conductors are just supplying the water or blanket, nothing.
    - This is a strange situation and the conductor should be terminated and jailed.
    - No way conductor can tell anyone to leave the bus once they board. It is his duty to verify the tickets before boarding. Of course, passengers should be fined/punished if they do wrong.

If the girls/Rashmi’s complaint is true then my opinion is dismissal of the conductor from the job is imminent. He is fat with ticket-less passengers money.

If the girl has not obtained the ticket in a proper way then the conductor has the right to press for money and issue a ticket to the passanger or he should complain to police but not harassing, stopping the bus, shouting and degrading the passenger in front of all.

In the case of e-ticket identity card is must for verification by the conductor.

There is another way. Rashmi should have paid the money/600 and obtained the receipt from the conductor. After all she would have claimed her money from the KSRTC or else she could have complained to the police later on with all these evidences.

There is disadvantage is also for her in the police station. Our police in the station are eagerly waiting to receive such complaints. They listen from both and take money from both. They blame both till police personnel pocket is full.
Any way justice should be done at any cost.
