Puttur: Policemen assault truck driver, locals outraged

Daijiworld Media Network – Puttur

Puttur, Sep 14: Two police constables on Saturday September 14 allegedly chased and thrashed a truck driver for not stopping his vehicle, and injured him badly. The incident took place near Kumbra here.

The truck driver Mohammed Nazir from Haryana suffered injuries and was admitted to hospital. Police constables Harish and Dayanand allegedly attacked truck driver.

The truck which was plying towards APMC to load arecanut was asked to stop by the police constables near Santyar. However, the truck driver did not pay heed to their signal and continued to drive, which angered the policemen.

The policemen then chased the truck and intercepted it near Kumbra, and reportedly assaulted the driver. Locals rushed to the spot and chaos prevailed for sometime as they started arguing with the policemen.

Sampya police inspector Jagadish Reddy visited the spot and calmed down the crowd, assuring them that he would inform the higher officials about the incident. Nazir who was injured badly in the attack was taken to Puttur government hospital in 108 ambulance.

However, the accused constables claimed that they were attacked by the truck driver when they asked him to produce certain documents. The constables too were injured in the incident and admitted to hospital.

People who gathered at the hospital in large numbers demanded suspension of the two police constables. Speaking to a senior police official, Olamogaru gram panchayat former president Abdur Rehman Ariyadka said, "It is wrong on the policemen's part to assault so badly a person who has come to our state to earn his living. There should be no communal notions among policemen, and higher officials should take care of it," he added.

Puttur block Congress president Hemanath Shetty condemning the incident said police constables should be suspended for their indecent behavior and strict legal action should be taken against them. "If the constables are not suspended, we will protest against the department," he added.

MLA Shakunthala Shetty who visited the hospital said "I will instruct the higher officials to take stringent action against the constables. It is not a decent act by the police officials. We need to respect the people coming from other states," she said adding that she would hold a meeting with district incharge and senior police officials.

Additional SP Shivakumar, circle inspector Suresh Kumar among others visited the spot.

A written complaint was given by Abdur Rehman and Hemanath demanding termination of the police constable Harish and Dayanand. In reply to the letter, police officials promised that they will take action.

I have seen the comment on Jeevan from long time. No doubt, He is a follower of RSS. He spits venom against minortiy everytime. As per the law, If any vehicle does not stop on request of police, Then police will note down the vehicle number and impose the penalty on him by sending the penalty charges to his residence address where driver will have to visit police station and pay the charge. This happens to me once When I was in a hurry to go home once in mangalore.

Now coming to police people, police always behave very rudely with the people, They dont follow any law but they have their own law. As per the rules if any document is missing then driver is suppose to display will given 15 days of time to get the necessary documents, If he fails then then penalty is imposed on him. But here police law is different, They will ask us to pay the fine immediately. Question is not about religion, its about the law and puttur police is always in the news for their misdeeds including sullia.

There is a need for a change in Rules, Regulations, method of arrest, handling criminals, erring drivers or citizens too. Police need to get respect from citizens too at the same time fear for the law. With the time, Police training methods should change, they cannot manhandle citizens, they need to learn how other countries do. There is a lot of respect for policemen in other countries but not in India. Citizens fear not respect. Time for a change in system.

Some of the readers commenting why driver did not stop the vehicle to police there may be a lot reasons for not stopping the vehicle but especially police stopping the vehicle not to check to loot (lancha) from the driver police does not have right to assault and beat on the roads like a animal let police take him to custody and punish him as per law. But do not defend Indian police I am watching here Saudi Arabian police too good example when they stop anybody first of all they are wishing then shake hand then they will check what ever they need.

But our police OH MY GOD. I will give one example of our police 15 years ago one of my neighbor applied for the passport and passport department send for the verification to police, Police called the applicant and verified the documents and all everything is ok after 2 weeks he received a letter from Bangalore Passport office that quote" we came to know that the applicant is not available for Police verification" Unquote. Police sends the report that applicant is not available for verification for not paying. Police did not ask money with the applicant he does not know that applicants are giving money for the verification. If police asks with him he would have pay to police.

Some of the police constables are shameless and no culture at all. Police constables have no rights to beat or assault anyone. No matter whoever may be the police, strict action should be taken and terminated from the job. Let police constables learn to respect people and do their duties more sincerely and professionally. Although we do not know the truth, if the driver was told to stop, he should have stopped. Traffic Police will do their job and what is problem in stopping for while. But nobody can justify physical assault. Police can penalise him with fines because it could be a traffic related violation. You can't vent your anger on somebody who can not help himself, since he is a visitor. If he was a local, police would have got the same treatment right there. These policemen should be punished as per the prevailing rules without bias. The driver has come all the way this far to earn a living and we should respect all human beings.
