  • Distillery run by former Karopady GP president Alphonse Ligory D'Souza

Bantwal, Feb 23: Acting on a tip off, the Vittal police busted a spurious liquor distillery run by former Karopady gram panchayat president Alphonse Ligory D'Souza on Tuesday February 21 night. The police have seized equipment worth Rs 80,000 used for distilling, 8 bags containing 4,000 arrack sachets and 350 liters of spirit worth Rs 50,000. The total worth of the seized items is estimated at Rs 1.82 lac.

However, the accused Alphonse D'Souza, Greenidge, Francis and Satish Bhandary are absconding.

On Tuesday the police obtained a tip off that arrack sachets prepared in the distillery were being transported on a Scorpio jeep. Accordingly, the police gave a chase to the vehicle driven by Palemar Mohan.  During the chase, the vehicle lost balance and fell into a field near Kammaje of Karopady. 

There were 8,000 arrack sachets in the vehicle, which were confiscated by the police seized. The driver too was arrested who in turn provided details about the distillery.  The vehicle used to transport the liquor has also been seized.
