Mangalore: Cordel, Bajpe parishes emerge champions in KNS singing contest

Mangalore, Sep 16: The grand finale of the Golden Inter-parish Konkani Singing Competition organized by Konkani Natak Sabha to mark its 50th year was a treat, as singers of various age groups delighted the audience with a variety of songs by different composers. The event was held at Don Bosco Hall here on September 15.

Cordel parish emerged the overall winners in above-15 category while Bajpe parish won the permanent golden trophy in children’s category. Gurpur and Bondel parishes bagged the second and third prizes respectively in above-15 years category and Cordel and Bondel bagged second and third prizes in the children’s category.

Fr Valerian Mendonca, chancellor of Udupi Diocese presided over the stage programme. In his address he congratulated the organizers and said, “They gave gone to each church and picked up singing talents. They deserve all the applause,” he said. “It is a festival of songs, and I feel contented seeing it.”

Main sponosor of the programme, Rohan Monteiro of Rohan Corporation and educationalist and businessman Walter Stephen Mendes also spoke on the occasion.

Fr Denis D’Sa, Sangeeth guru Joel Pereira, singer Dr Prashant Raj Vamanjoor were the judges. Speaking on behalf of the judges, Fr Denis D’sa said, “The judgement was done only on the basis of today’s performance. We have not considered previous performances of any person. Quality of voice, modulation and expression have been given importance while judging the presentation.”

Lauding the efforts of Konkani Natak Sabha, Fr D’Sa said that the organizers have gone in search of talents and found them. "This is a good sign and a good platform for singers too." He was appreciated the five singers who attempted classical singing.

Pingara editor Raymond D’Cunha introduced the guests. Konkani Natak Sabha president Fr Cyprian welcomed and secretary Sunil Menezes proposed the vote of thanks.
