Bangalore: CM proposes massive buying of 4,684 buses at Rs 2,919 crore

From Our Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore

Bangalore, Sep 16:
As part of the Congress government’s plan to woo Bangaloreans, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has come out massive plans for the purchase of 4,684 buses and also improve the transport infrastructure at a cost of  Rs 2,919 crore.

The chief minister, who launched BIG Trunk Bus Services of the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) at the Vidhana Soudha on Monday, said the proposal to go in for massive buying of buses and improvement of  transport infrastructure was aimed at decongest ing traffic Bangalore City traffic and improve connectivity between the various cities and the suburbs.

He said the Government has submitted a comprehensive proposal to the Centre seeking funds to purchase 2500 buses to Bangalore City under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

Siddaramaiah said a total of 4684 buses would be purchased to provide increased connectivity to various districts and towns and cities within districts.

The estimated cost for purchase of buses has been put at Rs 2063 crore, he said.

Another Rs 856 crore would be required to construct workshops, bus-stands, bus depots and other infrastructure.

This is significantly higher than other cities of similar size and with similar bus ridership number such as Seoul (500 routes), London (700 routes) and Shanghai (1000 routes).

Currently, BMTC operates 6500 buses on 2400 routes, on an average only 2.7 buses per route.

BMTC launches 62 BIG Trunk buses

Tranport Minister B Ramalinga Reddy said the 62 BIG Bus Network consisted of four types of services:

Big Trunk (high frequency services along the 12 major arterial roads in Bangalore); Big Circle (high frequency circular services on the Outer Ring Road); Big City (high frequency routes serving high demand, high density corridors in the city centre) and Big Connect (high frequency connectivity between arterial roads beyond ORR).

To begin with, BMTC would operate 62 Big Trunk buses on Hosur road to provide connectivity to nearly 3 lakh daily commuters.

It would improve services to employees working in industrial areas such as Electronic City, Bommasandra, Attibele, Chandapura.

Big Trunk bus operates between Kempe Gowda Bus Station and Electronic City, KBS and Chandapura and KBS and Attibele Circle.

The route has been designated as KBS- 3E (KBS to Electronic City); KBS- 3 (KBS to Chandapura) and KBS- 3A (KBS-Attibele).

Thus, a Big trunk from KBS to Electronic City will be marked as 3E, KBS to Chandapura 3C and KBS to Attibele 3A.

BMTC project seeks to increase local connectivity with minimum change of buses, thereby, encouraging more people to use public transport.

Volvo buses are ideal for the prevailing road conditions in Karnataka since Volvo have very good suspension system and strongly built body with comfortable seats plus reliable AC.
It may take years to build the railway net work until then buses will have to meet the increasing demand of road transport. As well TATA also can supply state of the art buses as they have stakes in overseas manufacturers. TATA is also a best option.

Buying Buses Ok. But How about maintaining Them. How about the rough usage by the arrogant drivers and what about the route distribution. Government Services are not reaching to the consumers need. They fly according to their needs. Some times they buses are flown without PAX. These Government employees doesn't care the needs of common commuters. We need a Service Like- BEST in Mumbai! Hats off to the governing Authorities of BEST.They have brake inspectors,TT and good service to the commuters. But few of the drivers and conductors are Arrogant and depends on which union they belongs. Hence Please make sure that you implement a correct procedure before you make a such huge deal.bus needs to be clean everyday if not once a week. All the best Dear Siddhuji.

Buses can be a viable mass transportation option if you have a good road infrastructure. Bangalore along with most cities in Karnataka are already over congested, so adding more buses will lead to more congestion. Instead why not invest on rail transportation ? It is 2013 already, and Karnataka's capital Bangalore and Karnataka's largest port city Mangalore are yet to have a direct train connection thanks to private bus lobby . And the metro work in Bangalore has progressed at snails pace and is already grossly over budget.

It's a huge amount to improve the present transport infrastructure in Bangalore. There must me some mastermind behind this project to loot public money. It is public money paid by various means of tax, etc. There are more problems to solve, like providing drinking water, housing, proper roads, electricity, educational institutions, hospitals, etc. etc. Many of the remote villages in our state are in dire need of these basic facilities. Bangalore has massive traffic congestion, specially, during peak hours and by introducing more buses will create a worst situation for commuters. This is a mere political game to increase their wealth within the period of their tenure and not in the interest of the public. May be a 10% of the public will benefit. People have voted for a better government to provide basic necessities and better living and not to loot public money.

For those who may not be aware, kindly be informed that Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation - KSRTC, is the ONLY profit making transport Corpt. in the country.
So instead of criticising JUST because you can, please make use of this media to appreciate things too.
Infrastructure / Transportation etc. being one of the MAIN backbones of any economy let this be the first step of the new Govt. towards a better tomorrow.
As for scams etc. guess with all the exposures, people will be more cautious and not get involved in them, which is my hope and prayer.

Siddappanna you saw how the local Metro Trains work in China and how they pick up speed instantaneously and run at a speed of 80 km per hour within city. But here in Bengaluru our own Namma-Metro moves at a maximum speed of 30 km per hour due to sharp curves which were the result of faulty planning. This Faulty planning was intentionally done to save the land & buildings of powerful politicians and other vested interests. Even in our own Mumbai, Chennai & Culcutta the Local Trains move at a speed of 80 KPH.

Sidduji, with the kind of traffic jams Bengaluru is facing every day from morning 6 to night 10, even existing buses cannot be put to full use. Then what is the use of purchasing so many new buses. They will just increase traffic jams, that's all.
If you had implemented some drastic plans to ease traffic jams of Bengaluru based on traffic systems of China, then it would have been praise worthy.

    Great Job.
But buying busses is only one part.
like BEST during and just after British time in BOMBAY= this was the best success story in India as far as punctuality-timings-discipline -organization-management -cleanliness etc concerned.
There is should be a transport Academy to train - provide them uniform-
Busses should be spic and span always- NO SMOKING A ALL 100% NO.
No over speeding-Staff should all be clean -pleasant-helpful- customer friendly-with neat uniforms.
It should look like a airline company.
there should be evaluation of duties by the passengers which could then help in promotion -raise in salary fro the staff.
    All on-line.
    appraisal.
Always take customer fed back for suggestions -improvements -let it be highly successful venture with motivation .
WORK IS WORSHIP -Serving fellow human is like serving GOD should be the philosophy- YOU COME FIRST SHOULD BE THE POLICY.
The should also introduce neat bus station s-bus stops-all digital like in AIRPORT.
Let this company also introduce TRAMS -ELEVATED TRAINS - DOUBLE DECKER- TOURIST hop I -hop off buses.

In Gujarat it is development and here in Karnataka even if Siddhu does things better than feku, then it is scam. Double standards of the chaddies who cannot bear to see the glorious development of Karnataka under Shrimaan Siddramiahji after the 5 year chaddi corruption, scams, communal divide and misrule.

Hundreds and thousands of crores loss of revenue was presumed to have occurred in the so called 2G scam. Therefore where did all these crores or crows disappear when the licenses were cancelled and re auctions done? why did no company come forward to buy these licenses even for a small fraction of all those fictitious crores that were lost?
