Udupi, Sep 19: The call for bandh by Heddari Ulisi committee on Thursday September 19 demanding flyover on Brahmavar national highway and to protest against the problems created by the widening work on the highway, received huge response with hundreds of people joining hands for the cause.

The national highway was blocked at four places in the gram panchayat limits.

All shops and offices remained closes except for emergency services and supply of essential commodities.

The protest was held at Brahmavar main bus stand. Panchayat members and political leaders were also present and raised their voice demanding flyover in Brahmavar instead of cattle pass.

Local associations and college students expressed their support to the bandh and participated in the protest held at Chantaru, Haradi, Handadi and Varamballi.

Brahmavar Auto Rickshaw Union, Tourist Taxi Union Brahmavar and Barkur, Tempo Union Brahmavar, Small Shops Owners' Union, Building Construction Employees' Union many more unions supported the bandh. SMS College student union also participated in the protest by organizing a rally from SMS College to Brahmavar bus stand.

The national highway authority has proposed the construction of a cattle pass at Brahmavar national highway, which will divide the Brahmavar town, the protestors said, terming it bad for development.

Govindraj Hegde, convener of Heddari Ulisi committee, said, "Earlier we had a strike demanding conversion of national highway from single lane to four lanes, today, unfortunately, we have to call a bandh to protest against the proposed cattle pass which will divide the town. Brahmavar is a fast growing town and may become taluk in the near future, still the highway authority is not ready to contruct a flyover here."

"The highway authority says that they were not intimitated about the demand for flyover earlier, but I have written letters to all departments concerned on behalf of the public in 2011. I also met the deputy commissioner on Wednesday September 18 to discuss the issue. The DC requested to cancel the bandh and give 15 days' time to resolve the issue. In the next two days, a detailed report will be sent to the DC, MP Oscar Fernandes, who is also the transport minister, the PWD and the state government about the need for flyover in Brahmavar and problem created by the cattle pass," he said.

He further said that if political leaders cannot become heroes by getting the flyover constructed in Brahmavar, they should at least not become villains by dividing the town with a cattle pass.

Former MLA Raghupati Bhat said, "When I had look at the highway plan before the work started, I saw that five flyovers were proposed between Mangalore and Kundapur. But later I found that Brahmavar flyover was missing from the list, even though it was mentioned in the original plan."

Tight police security was deployed under the guidance of DySP Prabhudev Mane, circle inspector Prabhu D T, Brahmavar SI, Udupi traffic SI Amanulla and other police officials.

The committee along with Raghupati Bhat submitted a memorandum to the tahsildar after a rally.

Oscar Fernandes could have taken note of the bundh notice given by Brahmavarians much earlier and through Congress MLA \ MP could have informed them of the possible decisions on the demands made by the locals.
Now things are going a bit out of hand as even on Bundh day no info from Oscar or other ministers coming forth.
Because of Oscar, this will put a dent on the good works that has beeing done by Party MLAs\MP.
For party's sake at least Oscar should take immediate note of the situation and prove he can handle the Ministry that has been given to him.
All this time, he has been of no use any where in the Udupi District for the public...

No one knows the real motto behind the construction of new NH66. As far as Brahmavar is concerned, it is still worse. A few months ago, there were 2 road-crossings at Doopadakatte, one was closed immediately after a school van's accident took place, resulted into death of a student. We dont know why the sugar factory road-crossing was closed. The residents from this area have to go backwards 1 km. beyond BC road and come back the same route, covering 2 extra kms just to go to Brahmavar. As such the fuel rate has gone so high, one really cant afford to spend for unnecessary extra burden.

Most of the people know me in Bvr, even when we had Bharath Bandh we had to forcefully close many shops, but today surprisingly not even a single shop had been opened from 9am. what does this mean... People of Brahmavar are not cattle's where you need cattle pass, they are human beings with brain they need Fly over.
or they can go to any extent... Elections are near by.. this time in brahmavar its totally different "Sanction a Fly over or forget about out vote to you" Sir Oscar Fernandes it time to think..
5th October is the dead line for the Authority to Reply to People of Brahmavar. ( Not in A/C conference Halls, in front of he same open public of Brahmavar)

THERE SHOULD BE FLYOVER ELSE THERE SHOULD BE BIG ROUND ABOUT LIKE YOU CAN SEE IN GULF COUNTRIES IN BRAHMAVAR NEAR AKASHAVANI CIRCLE AND SERVICE BUSTAND. TREES AND GARDEN SHOULD BE PLANTED BOTH SIDE OF THE ROAD.

The bundh was called by Heddari Ulisi committee really it is appreciable movement. First of all politician should not be involved in such a bundh (either from BJP, Congress and JDS). Why Mr. Ragupathi did not shown up in any protest during last 5 years. When rave party was going on in St. Mary Island why he did not take part in protest there were lots of bundh were called in last 5 years why he did not take part in that bundhs.

Yes, that is the spirit, the Bvr bund is a successful. the authorities concern should wake up and look at it immediately. I had seen the cattle pass. the whole NH plan at Bvr is not properly worked out thoroughly. the increase in height at Barkur cross is rediculous and tidious one. the expansion of NH should work as push to development and not be a impediment to the growth of Bvr city.

Since the highway is running through the middle of town it can not do without both a fly over and an underpass for pedestrians and cattle.
It is a pity that there must a bund in order for the builders and authorities to realise it. Shows their inefficiency!

What is Raghupathi doing there??? The condition of the roads have been the same ever since he was MLA. So why the drama now...
Guess all such agitations must be free from political leaders associating themselves in it. Be it fighting corruption in the state and in the country.
