Nuclear issue: UPA surrendering India's sovereignty, says Murli Manohar Joshi

Bangalore, Sep 21 (PTI): Senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi on Saturday accused the UPA government of ‘almost mortgaging’ Indian interests in the wake of reports of attempts to dilute the nuclear liability clause in contracts proposed with US firms.

Nuclear reactors should be established on India's terms but the government seemed to be determined to support American companies, Joshi told reporters here, alleging "Indian interests are almost being mortgaged."

"We are surrendering our sovereignty on nuclear issue to U.S. agencies", Joshi said, amid a raging controversy over media reports that the government was trying to dilute the nuclear liability clause in deals with American nuclear firms for buying reactors during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's Washington visit next week.

Dismissing the media reports, National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon had stated on Friday that civil nuclear projects in the country would be subject to Indian laws, including on issues of civil liability.

Joshi said the UPA government was trying to dilute the nuclear liability act that the suppliers of nuclear reactors were liable for damages- a principle applied all over the world.

He said American companies did not have the experience in setting up nuclear reactors for the last many years, adding, "we have to be careful".

On the Muzaffarnagar riots in Uttar Pradesh, the BJP leader said the "type of incidents and approach of Mulayam Singh Yadav (SP leader) and UPA have resulted in total destruction of administration. Literally, there is no administration."

"The Centre and Mulayam are hand in glove and are following vote bank politics," he said, alleging that one community was being oppressed.

He dismissed allegations that Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's confidante Amit Shah's entry into Uttar Pradesh as party's in charge had triggered the atmosphere for riots, saying" this is blasphemy." "...it has nothing to do with Amit Shah."

On the controversy over allegations that an intelligence unit set up by ex-Army chief Gen V K Singh misused secret funds to try and topple the Omar Abdullah government in Jammu and Kashmir, Joshi said the government should come out with the full facts.

He said if there was "something fishy" or illegal, the government should take action or it should come out with "full facts" and noted that there were reports that Singh was being persecuted for sharing dais with Modi at a rally in Haryana recently.

To a question, Joshi said there was no division in BJP on the issue of Modi's Prime Ministerial candidature.

On former Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa's move to be part of NDA, he said, "let NDA meet and take a decision. If there is any proposal, NDA will discuss."

Once in a blue moon they come and show their patriotism. When the election comes patriotism appears suddenly upon them. First let them set right the internal problems, mainly the communalism. Where was he when the members of their Parivar attacked Churches, Prayer halls, people in Karnataka, where was he when Kandamal was burning, where was he when Godhra riots were taking place. Do you still say he loves Indians? If he does not love his fellow citizens, how can he love India on a whole.

US Company which is going to build reactor is not ready to sign a clause stating that incase the reactor fails in its operation,it is going to bear all the responsibilities concerning to human life and nature.UPA government is trying to dilute the contract by removing this clause to appease USA.This government has crossed all the limits. God forbid any accident like Union carbide happens and we will loose the entire town then who will be accountable???
Hence all these protests are happening and my request to all the commenters,do not comment by supporting induvidual parties. Comment as an Indian.

Murali Manohar Joshi is getting senile with age. Advani is having the same problem. That's why the RSS is calling the shots. The RSS is looking for weakness around and taking advantage of the situation.

Anyway , the BJP will never come to power at the center. Sorry to say this in advance.
