Mangalore, Sep 22: Union minister for transport, road and highways Oscar Fernandes on Sunday September said that an additional personnel secretary will be appointed exclusively for the twin districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi to monitor development projects here on a day-to-day basis.

Oscar Fernandes was addressing a discussion on 'Development and progress of coastal Karnataka' organized by Rachana, Catholic Chamber of Commerce and Industry at Bishop’s House here.

He made the announcement while responding to a memorandums on development works submitted by Mangalore South MLA J R Lobo and by Rachana.

The memorandum presented by J R Lobo was on road connectivity, tourism and railway, and the need for creation of job opportunities. The development works listed in the memorandum included construction of flyovers at Nanthoor, Pumpwell and KPT, development of Mangalore – Bangalore highway, prioritizing construction of tunnel road in Shirady ghat, and sanctioning of Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) project for integrated development of Mangalore city.

Lobo also proposed upgrading NITK Suratkal to IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) and to setting up central institutes in Mangalore as they are part of non-polluting development. "Youth of the region migrate in search of jobs. Hence infrastructure development, IT, tourism, industrial and service sectors should be given immediate attention," he added.

He suggested the need to improve Mangalore-Bangalore train connectivity to reduce commutation time. "Traffic on Konkan Railway track is already over saturated. Hence, the track between Mangalore and Mumbai needs to be doubled. There is also a need to establish divisional railway office in Mangalore," he said.

Rachana forum also presented a memorandum of requirements for the development of coastal Karnataka.

Responding to the memorandum, Oscar Fernandes promised to give special focus to development of this region. “All these activities are in different stages of progress. There is an opportunity to start many other development projects. It is logical to demand extension of Mangalore-Bangalore train connectivity to not only two days a week but all seven days, including night train. Presently, Bangalore-bound commuters have to needlessly pass via Mysore. There is a need to cut short the commutation time. This will be taken up seriously,” he added.

"Funds to construct Nanthoor flyover was already in the sanctioning stage, however, the issue to remove cables and water pipeline hindered the project," the union minister said. "Bangalore-Hassan road is ready for inauguration and there is discussion on constructing a tunnel road in Shirady Ghat at the earliest. We will also try to attract non-polluting companies including spare part manufactorers to the district,” he said.

Bishop of Mangalore Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza also spoke on the occasion. Earlier, the bishop on behalf of the diocese felicitated Oscar Fernandes for taking up the post of union transport minister. In addition, representatives of different organization including Rachana felicitated the minister with garlands and bouquets.

President of Rachana Ivan D’Souza welcomed and delivered the introductory address. Secretary John Monteiro proposed the vote of thanks.

This is another episode of Oscar mamoo's drama. We have heard these types of development speeches from him and his associates from last 2 decades. This can be reflected from fate of our twin cities and issues like like roads, side walks, garbage disposition, power & water supply, condition of fish, vegetable markets etc.. etc. We need to see the action and physical development and not just assurances in speaches.

Let Mr. Oscar enumerate the things he did for the people of Karnataka, while in power.

He should now stay away from political gimmick and prepare to be a good human.

It is strange that people forget to do good while they are assigned for the task.

There is a great challenge at hand, come 2014. Now that Modi is the official candidate of BJP Congress is utilizing all resources at its disposal.
Now even the IAS officers under one guise or the other are deputed to ensure that most votes are casted for Congress. DK now has most Congress MLAs, Mr. Oscar himself is an MP...and this apparently is not sufficient. An additional secretary it seems will be deputed. What is that "additional" empowerment he has that he will be able to deliver that our MLAs and MPs can't? FYI Mr. Lobo himself was former MCC commissioner!!!!

Most of the pathetic conditions of Highways comes under whose portfolio...Siddu or Oscar? Wait a minute the answer is both. Oscar for National Highway and Siddu for state highway. Then why are our highways in this pathetic condition always?

"Oscar Fernandes promised to give special focus to development of this region"!
What a statement by an eminent politician who decorated so many high posts in the central as well as in Karnataka particular.
All these years, he was sleeping..! and is still at the same stage of promising...!

I will not vote for him and advice anyone to vote for him. Rather vote for Sadananda Gowda and even Yediyurappa.

Roads are plenty and vehicles are enormous, being multiplied and mushroomed
The need is repair and maintenance of roads for smooth and safe running of vehicles
Save fuel, eliminate pollutions, reduce costs and increase capacity is in demand
Primitive concept to face the fast and dynamic economy, is not an appropriate choice
Instead change concept to increase speed, capacity and efficiency is the essence
Let us break the evolution of centuries, to enjoy incredible solutions with amazing benefits
If you feel the necessity of a wonder, let us do it by implementation of a concept change
The opportunity is to utilize power in hand, to prove efficiency and show performance

Mr. Lobo may not be aware that if NITK is converted to IIT, we will lose the state quota seats that our students are availing currently.I have seen this quota helping lot of students locally.
Hence what we need to ask is for a seperate IIT and not to convert NITK into IIT.

Oscar perfect example of " No Hope for Human Race " !!! He is close to so many powerful politicians in India , but what is contribution to Udupi in last 30 years ?? Big zero.

I dont like BJP but maximum development was made during MLA Raghupati Bhat's tenure in Udupi ! When good work is done we have to appreciate it no matter who is it !

    Again promises.

In my company, when a vendor was following up for payment vigorously, in order to reduce the pressure, my colleague had said "Sir, your cheque is ready". The vendor asked, "ok shall I come to collect it?". My colleague replied "Sir, cheque is ready, but it is not signed"! Same situation here.

It is high time to ask the elected reps to list down their achievements after their election.

Are they just keeping the religious leaders on good humor or really do they perform?

All these things I tell from my heart:O.K.
1.Oscar is the most humble, approachable ,Union Minister you can ever find. Simple and no airs about him. The road to him is free from all pot holes.
Alas! But almost all roads in M'lore and along N.H. 66 is full of pot holes. Non approachable...
What an irony! To be born 'Additional Secretary' please note this first .... Oscarji travels mostly by train and may not know....Very simple man Oscarji...believe me....
    2. I am a fan of Ivan. Why? Simply because he is President of 'Hamali Sangha', Autorickshaw Union' and now even Rachana. See his range. Can you beat that? Not even Oscarji...Very unassuming...Ivan.
    3. Now Lobo Maam....Killing Bhat Maam I mean defeating Bhat Maam has made him a giant killer! But what does he do? Simply goes to
    hostels and serves 'Hot Saambhar'
to kids...and that too with a smile! Can you beat that? Did Bhat Maam do that? No...So as long as Lobo Maam serves Bhat Maam has no chance!
    4. Now Mariamma Thomas....I am her fan too. Political parties wanted to confuse her. However she has confused all of them including herself. This is no mean achievement.
    5. I wish the Catholic Chamber of Commerce well in it's endeavor. Development of DK district should be the foremost in our mind regardless of party affiliations.
When in power, people concerned, should be on their toes to serve those who elected them.
