Kundapur: Orphaned girl tortured by couple after adoption, rescued

Kundapur, Sep 24: A family who had adopted a girl from Bangalore with the promise of looking after her, allegedly tortured the girl and also denied her basic rights. The incident came to light at Hengavalli gram in Kundapur on Monday September 23 evening.

It is learnt that the family which is into hotel business misused the girl. Sri Devi (name changed), aged 8 years is the girl who was allegedly tortured.

Sri Devi is the daughter of Siddappaji and Bhairavi from Bangalore. When Sri Devi was a child, a fight between her parents had resulted in her mother's death. Shocked by his action, her father Siddappaji committed suicide leaving the child an orphan.

Later, Shobha Shetty, daughter of Ramanna Shetty from Hengavalli and her husband who was running hotel business in Bangalore adopted her. However, it is said that they never took care of her and made her do all the household chores like cleaning, washing clothes, vessels and did not even provide her sufficient food. There were many burnt marks on her body as well.

The girl who was studying in class 1 in Bangalore was made to quit the school as there was no one to work at home. Meanwhile, the hotel business was under loss and hence the family came down to Kundapur, where Shobha Shetty gave birth to a child. Sri Devi said that after the birth of the couple's child, she was ill-treated even more.

Unable to bear the torture from her new 'parents', Sri Devi on Monday morning escaped from the house. She walked for about one kilometer through a wooded path and reached a house where she narrated her tragic story. The family gave her food and informed the Dalit Sangarsha committee state convener Uday Kumar Tallur.

Later, under the guidance of SP Dr Boralingaiah and assisted by The Concerned for Working Children Association and media persons, the girl was rescued taken to Kundapur police station.

On Tuesday September 24, she was produced before the child welfare committee.

First I thought of writing that God has closed his eyes, but then I realized India is always boasted to have its rich culture etc. etc.and all bla bla bla.....I do not understand this culture at all..... people here find sex appeal in a small child, people find so many other things legal even they are against our culture, every girl child in India is ill treated and we see that, we mourn for and join the processions to show that we are against this.

But my dear friends next day you dont even want to hear about the same news. You want another something spicy....PLEASE UNDERSTAND A GIRL IS A LOVING DAUGHTER, A WIFE, A MOTHER AND ABOVE ALL SHE IS THE CREATOR TO ALL MEN THE GREAT MEN IN THIS WORLD, WITHOUT WOMEN YOU DO NOT HAVE A IDENTITY IN THIS WORLD. It would be better and good that you understand as soon as possible. Just think as we kill a girl child in the mothers womb, we have heard a lot about it what if the mothers kill a boy child in their womb to avoid this nuisance you create against women in the world.....MOTHERS WILL NEVER DO THIS BUT BETTER BE AWARE AS WE HAVE ALWAYS UNDERESTIMATED THE WOMEN POWER YOU NEVER KNOW.....

If the child is really tortured by the adopted parents, then the parents must be punished severly. But I feel something fishy. For me the child looks healthy and dressed neat and clean. In the photos we can see only one old scar mark in the hand. I request the concerned authorities, please investigate the case properly and if the child was really mistreated, then file case against the adopted parents.

The so called frustrated parents! Showing anger on a innocent kid is not a solution for your problems! Ill-treating her is not a heroic act! Behave like human beings, first ! I hate such people, who take wrong decisions in their lives and end up doing such sadistic activities.

Because of such people, genuine people who want to adopt a child sometimes because they are childless or sometime to give a new life to an orphan are denied this chance. The red tape that they have to combat deters them from their benevolent intention. With the treatment meted out to this little girl, she will always be afraid of strangers and wary of any person willing to adopt her. I cannot fathom how people can be so cruel? Even animals have better sense than this. Hope she will be able to recover from this trauma. Hope and pray the concerned authorities take strict action against these so called parents.

    Prashant Poojari,

Your feelings and lots of other reader’s feelings would be the same. We feel so dejected to see angle like kids are ill-treated by monstrous humans. Even animals (pets) are looked after well but innocent, helpless poor children are being tortured mercilessly.
We cannot curse but God has to teach that couple a lesson to learn in their life time.

To the couple who adopted the little child.. People, do you think, you got free labor by adopting a little innocent girl??? What right do you hold in doing so. People like you shake the very foundation of hope little kids have on living a bright future with new parents. First of all, these are kids who have come from violent, horrible pasts and people like you destroy whatever hopes these poor kids have. People like you are a shame to the society. You sadists will suffer. Even Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these". Children belong to God and are like God. People like you ah I cannot say further. I am shaken by this. May God give you some sense of guilt and shame and realization!!!

    I have several doubts:
    1. The adoption agency has made the biggest blunder.
    2. who got the social survey (Home survey report) how authentic is that
    3. Who has certified the prospective parents. without knowing their nature? something fishy
    4. How can the details of a adopted child be published and how the parental information has gone to media? adoption agency at fault
    4. whether the child was certified as free for adoption? what legal holdings of her biological parents?

The parents who has tortured should be severally punished but the stakeholders involved in handing over should be also punished. If proper inquiry is done the money flow in this deal will be exposed.

I don't think that the girl was adopted legally. Legal adoption have very strict terms and conditions, besides, the adopted couple needs to be under constant surveillance.

Something is amiss. I hope the girl will find a shelter where she will looked after as a human being, a precious gift - not as a favour to mankind.

    Rahulroy,

I understand your pain but you must come to terms that as per law, those who have one child are not preferred to let adopt irrespective of gender (I mean, if you want to adopt a girl). The law is similar, no matter which center you will try.

Moreover, there is age limit to adopt a child, combined age of both of you shouldn't be more than 90 (if I remember it correct).

Do not loose heart, you can rather sponsor poor children as legal guardian. Though it doesn't make them your own, you can at-least have some solace that you are helping a needy.

    Cheers !

So bad and sad to come across such an inhuman treatment meted to this girl. First of all, that girl suffered so much by going through the fights between the parents, losing the parents and cruelty in the hands of foster parents.

The couple must have adopted the child with the intention of making use of her for domestic work. What pity? Some people are born to torture others.

God please be merciful towards Sri Devi.

@R.Bhandarkar,you mean the newborn from adopted Family?when so, never. Its their own flesh and blood.they wont do it .The other child is free of cost you see,and nobody is there to enquire about this child they must have thought (till now)who knows whether it is legally adopted? when then there must be registered papers .And the orphan was may be happy to get rid of one mouth to feed.and just handed over I suppose.

Animals in human shape. I guess sometimes animals are also better than these kind of humans. Why do you adopt children if you cant take care of their basic needs and rights? I think sometimes this adoption drama is played only to get a free housemaid or babysitter or to do child labor. Before giving children for adoption concerned authorities should verify the financial status and social life of the families. May be this is how children can be saved from this so called adoption drama.

Very unfortunate and inhuman incident. After giving birth mother might thought adopted daughter? may be a burden!!!!It's because of Devi's entry to the childless house couple got baby!!!!But cruel couple forget everything and started to avoid adopted child violently!!!!In fact they adopted the child in view of making her household work...God saved the child and Police must book case against couple under stern law of atrocities against child to remain the jail to have a humanitarian lesson in the life.
