Qatar sets up new cameras to catch drivers passing on the right

Doha, Sep 28 (Doha News): Qatar’s Traffic Department has started installing surveillance cameras on major roads in Doha to catch drivers who queue-jump by passing on the right, the Ministry of Interior has said.

Using the “slow” right lane to overtake vehicles in the left lane is a traffic violation punishable by a QR500 ticket, but among one of several rules flouted by motorists here.

In a series of tweets in Arabic this afternoon, the MOI explained that the cameras will take pictures of offending cars, adding that they are high-tech enough to catch drivers at night.

It did not specify where or how many cameras will be installed.

"So every driver should take care, comply by the law and avoid making such violations."

Last year, Qatar began deploying plainclothes police officers to ticket drivers who overtook other vehicles on the right. It is unclear if they will continue to do so.
