Sailor injured in ship explosion rescued

Mumbai, Sep 28 (IANS): One of two sailors injured in an explosion on a ship in the Arabian sea has been rescued, the Indian Coast Guard said Saturday.

An official said the explosion, described as "accidental", took place on MV Kurobe, a Panama flag vessel around 400 nautical miles off Mumbai.

Two sailors were injured in the incident, including Filipinos Restituto S. Manlapz, 54, and Jaime Patawaran, as the vessel was sailing from Abu Dhabi to Singapore.

In response to a distress call from the vessel Friday, the Coast Guard co-ordinated the relief and rescue operations with Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, Mumbai.

The vessel also altered her course towards Mumbai to facilitate a medical evacuation.

The ship officials were also advised to take help of tele-medicine to stabilise the injured crewmen.

Battling severe weather conditions in the high seas, a helicopter managed to land on the MV Kurobe.

While Patawaran was revived on board with the medical assistance, Manlapz failed to revive and was taken to Mumbai Friday night for treatment.
