Mangalore, Sep 29: ICYM along with various like-minded associations held a massive protest march against the proposed Niddodi ultra mega power project here on Saturday, September 28.

The protest march that was flagged off at the Bendore Church ground culminated at the DC's office, passing through Balmatta, Jyothi circle, Hampankatta, and RTO. A memorandum was also submitted to DC N Prakash on this occasion.

The protest march was flagged off by vicar general Msgr Denis Moras Prabhu. Speaking after the flag-off, he said the memorandum submitted today should reach not only the DC but also the departments of the state and the central government. This anti-environment project is highly condemnable, as it strongly affects the surroundings, he said.

"Our environment is getting contaminated and hence we have to fight against this project. The youths especially have to come in large numbers and protest against this Niddodi power project," he added.

A formal stage programme was also held outside the DC's office to mark the protest. Fr J B Crasta, Fr Ronald D’Souza, Alphonse D’Souza, Victor Mathias, Eric Ozario, Denis D’Silva, Nigel Pereira, Darrel D’Souza, Kiran Manjanabail, Fr Edwin D’Souza, Ivan D’Silva, Fr Edwin Correa, Ponnanna, Rakesh Shetty, Lawrence D’Souza, Lydia, Dexter Saldanha, Sheldon Crasta, Ashwini D’Souza and others were present.

Addressing the protestors, Darrel D’Souza said, "We are not against development, but we do not want any project harming our environment. If the authorities do not respond to our demands, then a massive protest will be held in the coming days."

Kiran Manjanabail said, "We see that people living near the UPCL are suffering a lot due to the effects of the power plant. We do not want this scene to repeat in Niddodi. Politicians too did not respond to our problems."

Condemning the proposed Niddodi power plant project, he said, "Majority of the people living in the Niddodi surrouding mainly depend on agriculture for their living and this project is likely to affect their livelihood."

Members of several associations like Mathrubhoomi Samrakshana Samiti, Catholic Sabha, Jagotik Konkani Sanghatan, ICYM/YCS Udupi divison, St Aloysius College students' council, All Mangalore Working College Union, AICUF, IFCKA, DCCW, Jesus Youth and others took part in the protest.

Yeah, thats wat we are doing. Thinking about next generation. Next generation can't survive just on electricity right? They too need pure air, water and food. We are trying to protect those needs.

Yesterday,Oscar Fernandes was in Mangalore. But he never talking about this issue nor he don't have time to hear the grievances of general public. Now politicians become deaf, dumb and blind. They only know to fill their pockets.

Being power and authority in hand, do we really need to protest and waste our time?
Are decisions makers blind and deaf in wisdom, while taking major decisions?
Our leaders are trying to make the life of people comfortable or miserable?
Their aims are solving problems with solutions or creating fresh problems?

Don’t we have barren land, instead of blocking and destroying the fertile land?
Can’t we use this valuable time of our youth in some productive projects?
Are our leaders so uneducated which makes our professionals to step on roads to show their wrongful decisions and correct them? Is this the only language they can understand?

Why Channarayapatna / Kunigal or Arasikere ? Let it be in Niddodi itself. It is very close to Mangalore Port too.

During the monsoon season the water in the Nethravathi River overflows the Thumbe / Maravoor vented Dam and goes into the sea. So it is advisable to have this water diverted towards Channarayapatna / Kunigal / Arasikere / Davanagere. I support this plan / idea.

Guys wake up! Remember Cogentrix... we lost it and suffer the fate. Think of the future generation.

This initiative can't doom Mangalore. It will only gain prominence and greater development.

To save mangalore, shun all the religious gimmicks, moral policing and hatred!

Ashwin, udyavara was once an agricultural place. Even now to some extent. Surely why not udyavara? I don't mind, if they identify udyavara as a prominent and suitable place for this project.

With the rising temperatures year after year, people may not survive without the air cooling in the next 100 years. Country's pathetic power situation throughout of-course will be a doom then.

Will I be turning in my grave then with your concern?

Recently Govt. of India has passed a bill which prohibits any private project if more than 20% of the people effected in the project are against the project. Why not simply file a case in the taluk court against the project. The case can be taken to district, high court and SC over a period of time.
