Mangalore, Oct 2: A massive rally was organized from Jyothi circle to DC's office here on Wednesday October 2 against the proposed Yettinahole project, urging the government to withdraw plans to divert the Netravati river.

The main organizers of the rally were Karavali Yuva Sinchana, Vanya Charana Balaga and Rotary Club of Mangalore.

The rally was supported by Nurture Nature Club of School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, St Aloysius College, Karavali Chitra Kala Chavadi, Kudremukh Wildlife Foundation, Meredian College, Youth Hostel Association Mangalore unit, All College Association, Aam Aadmi Party (DK), Netravati Samrakshana Samiti, Malenadu students' association, RX Life, Lions Club, Arya Hola Pratishthana, Gokulnath college, photographers' association of Mangalore and others.

Addressing the gathering, Kishore Kumar from Malenadu Janapara Horata Samiti said, “We are not against providing water to the other parts of Karnataka, but we are against the diversion of Netravati river that would affect the ecological habitats and the environment.”

“The estimated cost of the project is said to be Rs 20,000 crore and around 325 watt electricity would be used to lift the water for the diversion. Such a lot of waste of resources must be taken into consideration," he added.

He also said, “The corrupt officials are making money out of this project and Yettinahole project is only initiated in the name of vote bank.”

He also informed that a memorandum has been submitted to chief minister Siddaramaiah to discard the Yettinahole project and stop the diversion of Netravati river.

The protestors pointed out that according to Kudremukh wildlife foundation, under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972 the diversion of the river would be hazardous to the wild life. "Even if this project is discarded no other electricity project should be initiated in the area in future; there must be an approval from the environmental department before initiating any such project and as Netravati depends on rainfall, the diversion has to be stopped," they said.

Niranjan Rai from Save Netravati committee (Uppinangady), Sunder Rao from Save Netravati committee (BC Road), Srisha Kumar Save Netravati committee (Puttur), Niren Jain, coordinator of Kudremukh Wildlife Foundation, Dinesh Holla of Vanya Charana Balaga, Madhav Ullal, Girish and other were present.

Puttur, Oct 2: Politicians who were not interested when lakes spread all over Kolar had dried up, are cheating people by intending to convert Dakshina Kannada as a draught region, said Prof Rohinaksha Shirlalu.

He was speaking at a protest meeting held by building and other contractors against Netravathi river diversion project held on Tuesday October 1 at Uppinangady.

"The project involving thousands of crores of rupees is meant to fill the pockets of politicians. The politicians seem to be determined in the project.  So large scale massive protests are required to prevent them from going ahead with it," he said.

"District incharge minister Ramanath Rai, who was against it, is now saying that it has gone beyond his control. This shows that we have to observe the steps of politicians carefully," he said.

Jayarama Nellitaya, director of Sri Kshetra Dharmastala community development programme, said that if the river is diverted, it will lead to natural disasters as the river will dry up and the district will have to face drought. He praised the protest of building workers in this regard.

Senior veterinary doctor Dr K M Krishana said that the river diversion project which will make the region lifeless.

Several building workers including women participated in the protest.  Association president Manohar Shetty, secretary Mahalinga and several leaders submitted a report to the government.  An appeal was sent to the governor through the tahsildar on the occasion.

The protest meeting started after garlanding the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Uppinangady Gandhi park.  A procession was also taken on the occasion.

Lokesh Bethodi conducted the programme.  Jayantha Puroli, Kailarajagopal Bhat, Dr Niranjan Rai, Karunakar Suvarna, Kangai Vishwanatha Shetty, Seetharama Acharya, Yunis Rehman, Aboobakker Niha, Sunil Daddu and others were present.

Rajesh Naik Udupi, I feel working in foreign Countries We are more patriotic and less corrupted as we support Indian economy By our remittances and are not a stumbling block for the development and growth of our country and being residents of developed countries, we understand our short comings of our country.
First of all confirm to me if there was any detailed article about the Project explained specifically to all concerned?!! if not I am sure 99% of the people never understood what they were protesting for if they are made to understand that we are basically rain harvesting there would have been less than 10% of present rally crowd ,any way we are just doing what British had planned for a National Water grid way back in late 18th Century "According to Dr Gautam Pingle, Chairman, Public Policy Area, Administrative Staff College of India, the proposal to create a network of rivers and canals was made in meticulous detail way back in 1881, by Sir Arthur Cotton, that extraordinary engineer-economist who formulated a comprehensive sub-continental plan for the formation of a national water grid.Dr Pingle says that Sir Arthur's scheme was elaborate and, needless to say, did not involve pumping of any description though locks for navigation were envisaged. The plan involved navigation and irrigation, storage as well as river training. His list of potential projects was exhaustive and the costing was also given" !!
Now it is proven you are a misinformed individual please gets your facts straight, let all benefit by getting the basic requirements, instead of your political agendas, I have worked in deserts of UAE with Electricity and water 24x7 which hardly has any rainfall, where as when government tries to rejuvenate an old plan which will benefit everyone, our own people stop us from progressing further, I have no issues I still get power and water 24x7 where I reside!!

Kindly understand pumping water that you are speaking about is NOT using PUMPS. There is much more to it. We are dealing with nature and people like you I am sorry to say are being very very ignorant in saying whatever you are saying.

Water should be shared by all. That is God's gift to mother earth. Isn't Mangalore getting Rice from Shimoga , sugar from Mandya, Power from Kaiga / Jog, Crude oil from Iran to MRPL etc ?

Is it good to see the rivers overflowing into the Arabian Sea and mixing with salt water ?

STORING WATER : Mosquito's will breed and there will be more cases of Malaria. People will accidentally drown or commit suicide. Best solution : let it flow as usual.

Ronald, again..the water is not extra, it also recharges the ground water. If the ground water levels ,due to falling of trees and other developmental activities, there would be salt water intrusion contaminating the fresh water. No wonder ,if this project is implemented,DK area too would soon face water crisis.
Also, the project has many loop holes like when it says it is a drinking water project and the 'poor' Kolar and chikballapur get barely 10% of the diverted water. Any developmental activity involving crores of money should be such that it would have long term benefits, more importantly, it should be sustainable. Diverting is not a viable option and the only answer!

As long as there are no politicians involved in this, we must support this movement. I am really surprised and pleased that educated people also have spared time to protest against such devious schemes of leaders. Whether the protesters are fully aware about it or not, any attempt to alter the nature is wrong and in a long run it will cause more problems than it solves. We have got enough big time industries in the DK which feed on our natural resources and in return just pump out invisible poisonous gases. What a price to pay !

Diverting Netravati River is no option for the stupidity that bangalore did filling up all ponds and lakes for all layout or building constructions, now they facing water scarcity doesn't mean that take resources from neighboring places and cause problem for them. PPL i strongly oppose this diversion. We should NOT let this happen at any cost.i feel the protest has to take place on blore too. so that ppl get to know wht is happening . cheers to mangaloreans :)

Chinny, Do not worry about balancing sea water!! It has enough land surface throughout the world!! It need not strike balance with Karnataka water!! I wish our extra water be used for dry area of Karnataka including poor land like Kolar!! To start with we need to have a heart to accept Karnataka is our Mega family!! Hence very few comments since people are least bothered about protesters with vested interest and most of them has no idea why the protest is held!!! Pits!!! CM said it is only lifting water from the river!! Let our brothers get some additional water tables in Karnatka!! It goes exactly to resemble a proverb meaning...I do am not hungry!! Hungry should not be fed tooo!!!!! There is no prosperity for these protesters thinking process!! Individually they could be fine!! Ill information and jealousy is real cause of this protest!!!

First, the river water that goes into the sea is not to be termed as 'waste water'.It is essential to maintain the ecological balance, for the birds, mammals and fish to live, feed on and reproduce.
Diverting a river includes laying of large no.of huge pipe lines passing through the thick forests of the fragile western ghats, construction of dams, reservoirs that would occupy thousands of hectares of forest land of the endangered Western Ghats along with all its fauna. Western ghats is listed as one of the 8 hottest hot spots of bio diversity in the world and also a UNESCO world heritage site.

True that water scarcity is the problem of the drought prone districts that should be immediately addressed, but other alternative means can be looked into, instead of diverting and interlinking the rivers which is not only a major threat to the environment but also technically not feasible according to expert reports.

99.9% not only don't know about this and about anything else. That doesn't mean the project is good for us. Flooding of estuaries is required for spawning of certain fish. With this diversion fish yield may fall. At least I need to eat fish everyday may not be people from Bengaluru/Kolar.

They should make Tulunadu as a separate state. We will progress more than as a part of Karnataka, I can tell you Vincy.

Study the ecosystem completely before saying that 122TMCft of water is nothing. We have not even considered the destruction such large scale projects will cause to the fragile ecosystem of western ghats during construction phase and later due to continuous access.

I am sure, 99% of the people dont even know what they are agitating for. If projects are stopped because of silly reasons giving excuse of nature, there will not be any development. Where were these nature lovers when so many high rise buildings were being built in Mangalore? Temperature of entire city has risen by 4-5 degrees just because of obstruction to free flow of air and cutting down trees for building high rise buildings. Why did the people not fight for spreading the city horizontally like Delhi, chandigarh etc. instead of putting up high rise buildings? The answer is, land prices would not have gone up if tall buildings were not allowed. Every one kept quiet at that time. Agricultural land was converted to get more money. Now even the projects for getting more water are also being stopped by few culprits by giving silly excuses and making "bakra" out of common man.

We can agree with you Vincy. People of DK are known for generous. As you told lot of water flowing to Arabian sea, this is nothing but waste. The young minds who participated in this protest are actually don't know what is Yettina hole Project, Even me also. Instead of wasting water, we can feed same wasting water to our own people of Kolar. But Our state government should explain how it is handling this project. Until it is explaining the planning of this project, nothing wrong in protest of Tuluvas. We should hold protest until emerging clear picture of this protest. Lot of discussion should be held.

Honestly, I do not know what is the governments plan at Yettinahole, But building dams is not a bad thing, way to preserve the water flowing towards sea unused.
A good colorful rally holding banners saying preserve GREEN..!! protect nature...!! how many of them use to poured water to a tree on daily basis.? how many of them planted tree on their land. I hope many of the homes\flats at Mangalore city limits do not even have a single flower plant. MCC/Road authority has planted trees on road sides & they are dying without water. why nature lovers think about them & pore water/take action about those dying trees..?
Few peoples are just enjoying the rally, spending time on chatting or browsing on phones, they may be don't know what is the purpose of their protest.
when government doing some work there should be something good. As I know government planed to make Airport at Nandikoor but ped than plan because of protest , now a more worst thing came there...!

Protest the pollution creating industries, protest the power- plants.

These people have no knowledge of what is yettinahole project
Do you people know that more than 2,000 tmcft of rainwater in the Western Ghats flows into the Arabian Sea per year.
Out of this 2000 (Thousand million cubic feet)onlyy 122 TMCFT of flood water will be flown through flood canals and then pumped to to the nine districts, Bangalore Urban, Bangalore Rural, Tumkur, Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Hassan, Mandya, Ramanagaram and Chikmagalur. Why not make this project and solve the farming problems of Nine districts.
They are going use rain/flood water which is flown to the Arabian sea every year.People who protest have no idea to think why the planning commission come out with this plan.

People who have no knowledge often speak a lot. Same here. Indians sitting in faraway countries talk about sharing water, we are brothers, why not let unused water be pumped away to places where there is no water and these guys also say majority of the people participating do not know why the rally is held. Blame owns lack of knowledge, on others! Wake up guys. Netravati, Tunga and Bhadra these 3 rivers take birth within a radius of 5 kms. Nature has sent Tunga and Bhadra to the east and Netravati to west. Nature does this to balance the equilibrium of the fragile world we live in. River Hemavati which takes birth a little distance away, flows to the west as well. Flood water infact helps the silt accommodated at the mouth of the river to be pushed back into sea. This facilitating easy movement of fishing boats in and out of the harbour. There are many reasons like this, all of which can not be provided as justification to opposing the project in a comment. Because people who talk often do not understand, they need to be told face to face and made to understand.

What agenda you are talking about? It is the politicians and bureaucrats who have the agenda, not people like us, who spend time, energy and money to oppose the project. At least we make an effort to lodge our protest, unlike those sitting away in foreign land and talk rubbish. I advice those who talk against this rally and project, to visit the place of birth of Netravati, to visit the place where this project is to take place and see the presentation on this project when you come down to Mangalore next tome from your cozy foreign places and then talk. Garner some knowledge and then speak.
